Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

monkeytrousers · 21/08/2005 19:51

DP has agreed to come out with me on a trial run (well him pushing pram while I run ahead) in the next few days to see how far I get. Do you want to place your bets now? 1st time in a year and a half..

Running must be in the genes Beetroot.

I'm really struggling with running at the moment. I started a diet last Monday - which I am sticking to zealously, but as a consequence I feel like I am running with an empty tank. Distances and speeds that I was previously comfortable with are proving a real challenge /difficulty....

Morning all

Lovely it is here, too - totally grey from horizon to horizon and thin, drenching mizzle just floating around. Got nice and wet just cycling to work.

Beetroot! Hello! Your dad sounds amazing, in a rather scary sort of way. I do think that altitude training for the GNR is kinda cheating, though...

Sorry to hear about the blisters. Compeed plasters are pretty good for drying the little swines out quickly, like, when you need to go for a long run soon . Hope it goes well today, do you have your mate running with you?

HMC, dieting and running does sound like awfully hard work . Is there any way you can shift things around so you get a largish, carbo rich meal an hour before you run and a quick snack after?

I made it out for a long run on Sunday, but as it was neither long enough or fast enough, I'm on a bit of a downer right now. Still, I have three weeks until my next race and eight weeks til my next marathon, so anything could happen....

Oh and by the way, my money's on Monkeytrousers beating the pram by a short wheel!

Gizmo, I think you're right. I'll have to try a carbo rich meal a couple of hours before I run because I can't go on like this. It's demoralising!

monkeytrousers · 22/08/2005 10:08

Will let you know Gizmo

You are all an inspiration to me!

potty1 · 22/08/2005 10:11

MT good luck with the trial run.

My 6 miler was rubbish. My running mate had a skinful the night before so it ended up a run/walk with the emphasis on walk. Ho hum!

Hmc - I can't diet and run either - in fact I run so that I can eat more

Gizmo · 22/08/2005 10:12

So Beety, after your grand success over the weekend, did you manage any of the midweek outings last week?

handlemecarefully · 22/08/2005 10:16

Unfortunately Potty, I've got to diet. I am horribly porky!

Ah ha! I knew it - no biscuits for you this week, my girl

Still, if you can get out this week it won't make too much difference.

handlemecarefully · 22/08/2005 10:47

Feel immeasurably better after Beetroot's confession....

But yes - get on with it Beetroot - no slacking!!

Prettybird · 22/08/2005 11:46

Did my c.11 miler yesterday: was out for 1 hour 46 minutes. Don't feel at all bad today (although in deference to my advancing age, I am now very assiduous at my post run stretches). Only a few small blisters- in all the old places that I used to get them (tops of the toes and at the front inner side of my sole).

Dh did a 14 miler while I was out swimming with ds, so I had to do it on my own, but reckon I was doing at least 9 min 45s/mile pace - if not 9 min 30s.

Runs this week are going to be awkward to fit in as I am down in London tomorrow and then off to Iceland on Wedensday (returning Thursday - out of the country for less than 24 hours) - but I will still make sure and get in my 4 runs for the week.

Gizmo - that was the last really long run I was planning before the Great Scottish Run (on 4 September). I was planning a 10k mid week (probaby Thursday) and then an 8 miler next Sunday and another 6 miler next Wednesday, with a few 3-4 mile runs in between times (probably 4 milers this week and 3 milers next week). Then rest on Friday and Saturday before the race on the Sunday. How does that sound as a plan?

Beetroot - hope your run goes weel today.

HMC - try having a banana before you got and then eating within an hour after getting back in again (if you can face it): they say that the calories don't "count" for as much as your metabolism is still running really fast (excuse the pun ), so burns them up quicker.

Any news from Fionagib?!

handlemecarefully · 22/08/2005 11:54

Thanks Prettybird - will do that. As I am on holiday at the end of this week, if I don't wish you well for the Great Scottish run I won't get around to it (not back until 5th September), so GOOD LUCK!

Your latest run sounds pretty damn good - to keep to 9 mins 45s for 11 miles. I can only dream of such feats

Gizmo · 22/08/2005 12:19

Ooooh Prettybird, that sounds like an excellent plan - absolutely textbook. Good long run two weeks before, proper taper, loads of rest just before the race. Plus your long run is at just the right training pace to bring you in at under 2 hours, I think - if you're running training runs at 9:37 min/miles, you should find that you can run 9:10 min/miles on the day, when you add in adrenaline and the cumulative effects of training and rest.

That will bring you in bang on 2 hours, unless my maths is gone awry!

Sounds very exciting - I want to race now (well, anything to get me out of the office today, really....)

Prettybird · 22/08/2005 12:20

Thanks hmc.

I'm assuming the distance by judging that I was going at c.9 min 45s - a reasonable assumption as I know I did the first 5k (the same route as the 10k I did in May) in about 9 Min 30s/mile, and I reckon I did the last mile in about 9min 45s.

Prettybird · 22/08/2005 12:29

Thnaks for the confidence in me Gizmo!

I'm going to try to use the mind set that I will "finish in around 2 hours".... I am worried that if I try too hard to break 2 hours I will blow up, whereas in my previous racing career, I was always very good at running even or sometimes negative splits.

I must go out and cycle the route I ran yesterday so I know for sure how far I ran: there were lots of "twiddles" in it to ensure that I a) was out for the time I had proposed (I hour 45mins) and b) I did the majority of the run close to a forested area (I have been having a certain "problem" - which ironically yesterday, when I prepared for it, didn't minafest itself!).

Back from holidays, didn't do any running at all so please ignore my post from below that I'd be running everyday.

Doubt I'll be able to do the 10k race thing now....it would finish me off!
