Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh fantastic! Well done you.

That is blinding Beetroot and a really good sensible pace too. Now go and have a nice shower, straighten your hair and go up to London with that lovely smug post run glow. You've b*dy earned it.

Prettybird · 22/08/2005 13:34

Fantastc Beetroot! Go, girl, go!

handlemecarefully · 22/08/2005 13:37

That's really good Beetroot

handlemecarefully · 22/08/2005 13:38

Bloody hell Beety - well done!

And don't you feel good now?!

Prettybird · 22/08/2005 14:22

It's a real achievement - be proud of yourself. and it will get easier!

I've worked out that my run yesterday is the longest run I have done in 8 years - when I last did the Glasgow 1/2 marathon. Can't remember the time I did then (freudian - didn't want to, as it was over 2 hours) - but somehow this time round it feels like more of an achievement, as I'm now having to juggle the damends of a family as well.

I'll get me coat! - just done a 20 minute run at lunch time is all...however in my defence, I only get 30 mins lunch break at work and so can only run for 20 (shower and changing accounts for 10 minutes)

potty1 · 22/08/2005 14:32

You and me both hmc!

Prettybird · 22/08/2005 14:54

{{{{{Group hug}}}}}} everyone!

We are ALL doing fantastically!

I really admire you for getting out at lunchtime - even for just a short time. That shows real organisation and determination. Every little counts too

handlemecarefully · 22/08/2005 14:57

Awww thanks PB

Gizmo · 22/08/2005 16:01

Yeah hugs all round - just making the commitment and keeping to it is 75% of the battle IMHO. Once running becomes a regular habit, one you do without really questioning it, you've got a ticket to long term health (and shoe bills!)

uwila · 22/08/2005 16:59

Can I join you guys? I had my second child 3 months ago. I've just gone back to work, and my suits are well... a bit snug. And they were a bit too big when I got pregnant. So, I think it's time to hit the running trail. I started running again a few weeks ago, but to be honest I've probably done as much walking as running.

Well, on that note, if I leave now I can get home and go for a quick run and be home again before nanny gets off duty at 7:00. So I'm off...

handlemecarefully · 23/08/2005 08:30

Hi uwila. Very impressed at your resolve to start running again so soon after second baby!

uwila · 23/08/2005 08:45

Thanks, HMC. But, I typed that message before I looked out the window and saw it was still raining. No running last night. But, will try to make it hom ein time tonight, when Mother nature has promised to cooperate.... fingers crossed.

Gizmo · 23/08/2005 08:52

Rain stopped play for me too last night, Uwila: but it was a particularly wet sort of rain, in my defence.

Starting off with run/walk may seem a bit frustrating, but I'm sure you're doing the right thing since it will put a lot less strain on your body and do a lot of the good work in raising your metabolism.

Good luck with your run tonight: I have speed work, always my least favourite session of the week, but the weather looks like it will be giving me no excuse

uwila · 23/08/2005 15:02

Okay, looks like the weather is holding up today. I'll just have to go tonight. No excuses.

I just mapped the route (guesstimated really) on MSN maps and what I though was about 3 miles turns out to bemore like 5 1/2 so I don't feel so bad about walking half of it now. But, I have a feeling this is too good to be true. I must drive it and check the distance on my odometer.

handlemecarefully · 23/08/2005 15:09

He he he - will be checking up on you tomorrow.

Gizmo · 23/08/2005 16:45

Uwila, if you want a really cool web-based route measuring device try this , which is based on Google maps and lets you blow up your route either on a map or a satellite photo. Seems very accurate, although it does measure all my runs as depressingly short

ajmum · 23/08/2005 17:06

I'm running the GNR in a month. I was running regularly before got pregnant (two years ago now! Wow - seems like yesterday sometimes) and have done three half-marathons before, but not recently. I'm interested to know if others think I'll be ready for the big day in time. I can only run about three times a week. My 'short' runs are now at least 40mins - so I do two of those (about four-ish miles) and I try to do one 'long' run (about an hour 6ish miles). Two weeks ago, I ran six and a half miles. Do you think this is enough? I'll probably try to do my last long run two weeks before and will aim for about eight miles.

Gizmo · 23/08/2005 17:18

Hi AJmum

Congratulations! I'm sure you'll get round - might involve a bit of run/walk but that can sometimes get quicker times than pure run, IYSWIM.

Sounds like we need a mumsnet meet up at the GNR at this rate.

lapsedrunner · 23/08/2005 17:29

Gizmo - your route measuring link looks great. Haven't read it properly yet but being a bit of a "trainspotter" (code some use to describe orienteereres, of which I'm one!) I love anything to do with maps.

lapsedrunner · 23/08/2005 17:29

Oh yes, and I actually went for a 40min off road run this morning
