Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Paula's won - she's a star!

Gobbledigook · 14/08/2005 14:44

Found it potty - in Alderley Edge on the main road. They do gait analysis too which is fab. Will try and go next Sat morning as FIL is here to help dh with kids while I go shopping

Gizmo · 14/08/2005 15:03

Oh ho, just finished watching Paula (woo hoo) and find that there are two reasons for celebrations. Congratulations, Beety: you should be proud of yourself. Although strictly speaking you ran your 5 miles at exactly the same speed as your 3 miles - slower next time!

Anyway, just put your feet up now and enjoy the achievement. Got any biscuits handy????

Three cheers for beety well done you.
5 miles in 55 mins without stoppong sounds good to me.
I went for a run this morning - same route as last Sunday but I walked it more, but I've got a sore throat/bad cold (my excuse anyway). Have had beer, pork pies and biscuits to help get my energy levels back
My sil is now talking about wanting to do a half marathon next year - help

Good grief Beety - 5 miles in 55 minutes without stopping when you've only just taken up running is amazing!

Gizmo · 15/08/2005 10:00

Hello folks - sorry about erratic posting, time on internet is a bit limited at home.

Beety, yes, eating before the race is a good thing. Very serious distance runners carbo load before races by depleting their glycogen stores (often by a period of fasting/controlled carb intake coupled with a run) then eating a very carb rich diet for the last 3/4 days before a race.

For more normal people, I'd just suggest plenty of complex carbs (bread, pasta, porridge etc) for the last 2/3 days prior. Works for me!

Oh, and drink plenty (of water )

Gizmo · 16/08/2005 16:44

Weeeeeeellllllll, Beety?????

monkeytrousers · 16/08/2005 17:52

I used to run alot before becoming pregnant. Now I haven't ran for...a year and a half. I'm still breastfeeding but only once or twice a day. They're still massive however. Is it possible without black eyes?

Gizmo · 17/08/2005 08:59

Get thee to a sports bra shop, Monkeytrousers! Wiggle and Less Bounce are both recommended. You might want to get a bra that is a little on the small size in case your boobs (norks?) get a bit smaller once you finish feeding - I know mine did

From personal experience I'd advise feeding before you go out as it will make the whole experience much more comfortable.

Now, where is that Beetroot woman?

handlemecarefully · 17/08/2005 13:01

You know what - don't laugh - but I double bag my boobs. Basically wear 2 sports bra's at once which renders them completely immobile.

monkeytrousers · 17/08/2005 13:16

Is that where you got your name from?

handlemecarefully · 17/08/2005 13:27

Ha - you're very witty today and in good form MT! (PMSL)

Gizmo · 17/08/2005 13:42

!

Two bras....that's genius

handlemecarefully · 17/08/2005 13:50

Do you think? I get quizzical looks in the gym changing rooms sometimes

Gizmo · 17/08/2005 16:34

You're not putting one on back to front are you????

monkeytrousers · 17/08/2005 19:36

Do I detect a wry note in your text there HMC? Was my joke a bit hackneyed?

lapsedrunner · 17/08/2005 20:12

I have also worn a "normal" sports bra plus a "minimum bounce" style on top in my early attempts at running after giving birth. Its' all gone to pot now though i.e hardly ever running ....and ds is 3 in Sep

handlemecarefully · 17/08/2005 21:26

No, you did make me laugh out loud Monkey trousers, and Gizmo's little quip was also worthy of a titter (groan at own bad pun)

Hey lapsedrunner - I'm glad I'm not the only one!

Gizmo · 18/08/2005 09:04

Well, I'm glad I didn't make a boob there.

....I'll get my coat.

monkeytrousers · 18/08/2005 09:42

Beat me to it Gizmo

Prettybird · 19/08/2005 14:05

I see the tone has deteriorated in my absence!

Still rushed off my feet at work, but just popped on briefly during lunch to say that my training is going well (finally!) for the Glasgow 1/2.

Running 4 times a week, with a 6-7 miler mid week and last week a 8-9 mile run on Sunday, and am planning an 11 miler for this Sunday.

Dh has gone out with me for my longer runs, which has helped. Did c.7 miles yesterday during the day, as I had taken the whole day off so that we could both take ds to his first day at school.

Still trying to convince myself that the important thing is to get round rather than break 2 hours (...... although my training is going well, so you never know .....)(Slap myslef on wrist and stop thinking that !)

Must get back to work. Hope everyone elses's training is going well! Haven't heard from Fionagib for a while.

Gizmo · 19/08/2005 14:20

Yes, Prettybird, a slap on the wrist to you for such dangerous newfangled thinking (about times)
