Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well let us know how it goes. And remember, rest is vital training, too

Oh no! Not the old 'well, of course I could do it, but I haven't got the time/I'm away that weekend/my war wound's playing up' line!

Look, you're doing it, thousands of people (including me) haven't bothered to get off our bottoms and do it. You're a winner already.

And once it's done, you can always go and use the fitness for something more fun...

It's a great experience - the crowd up there are fantastic and the atmosphere amazing.

Daydreaming about it during runs might be pretty motivational - but don't let it speed you up!

All it is, right, is you doing your 3 mile run, coming home, having a cup of tea and a little rest and then doing a very slow 2 mile run.

You could take the tea with you in a thermos, if you like!

Beetroot - go, go, go. I've done the GNR twice, it's a great event and you'll enjoy the atmosphere. You'll be fine if you run/walk and believe me you'll be no where near last! One word of caution, the last mile is the "longest", it is along the seafront and always seems to be into a headwind. Apart from that you'll have a ball.

Back to my MBT shoes (or rather boots).

PrettyBird - I bought the new style walking boots as we walk each day through woods with the dog, plus it's pretty snowy here in the winter. I thought they would be more use than the trainers. Have to say I love the feel of walking in them, only "signs" so far have been increase in lower back pain but assume this is just adjusting to change in posture. Definitely feel talller & straighter. Now wish I had a pair of trainers or sandals for all day wear (none my size on ebay!). As I am not really running much at present I'll keep you info'd....

Gizmo/Twink - (not sure who updates the list)....having said that I'm not running I've just rather foolishly entered the World Masters Orienteering Championships July 2006 (www.wmoc06.com). Sounds impressive I know however (a) you have to be 35 or over and I qualify by a few years, and (b) anyone can enter i.e. no qualification, it just happens to be about 40 miles from where we live and I thought it might motivate me

Did you have a good holiday Beetroot?

Is this the first time you've taken up running, or have you run before?

Well, after about 9 days off due to chesty cough I ran yesterday, but had to stop after just 20 minutes (normally very comfortable running for half an hour and have done up to an 1 hour's sometimes). I suppose I shouldn't be too dischuffed, because I am still a little symptomatic and coughing up the odd bit of green phlegm (nice, eh?)

I'm running again tomorrow and hopeful that I'll be back to normal.

What's with these MBT running shoes - are they the latest must have? Are they supposed to be really good?

mancmum · 13/08/2005 09:11

mbt boots?!! Tell me more -- I love my MBT trainers but did not like the shoes... so boots would be interesting..... where did you get them from?

Handlemecarefully - Have a look at www.mbt-uk.com for more info on the shoes, they are not really for running although it is possible.

Mancmum - The walking boots are a new line, they are on the UK website but have to admit I bought mine in Austria.

Hip hip hooray Beety!!!

GDG there is a good specialist running shop called Running Bear in Alderley Edge I think or Wilmslow. Don't be afraid to go in - they'll help you out no problem - the staff are runners not spotty 17 year-olds like the ones in JJB and the like.

Gobbledigook · 14/08/2005 14:40

Yes, I want a pair that are right - don't some of the shops have machines you run on to tell you whether your feet go in or out or straight when you run (there are posh words but can't remember!).

There's one in teh Triangle in Manchester = it's just finding time to go..

Gobbledigook · 14/08/2005 14:40

Oh really Potty? That's even better than trekking into town. Will see if I can find it online!
