Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

emmatmg,

Yep 5km in 30 minutes is quite good! I'd certainly settle for it (currently personal best is 31 mins and 15 secs - and frankly after that, I felt like I needed a paramedic!!!)

Fionagib - even if you have to walk some of the half marathon, it'll be a big achievement. I think you're brave just entering for the darn thing!

I'm having a little breather from running today and tomorrow. I ran on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and my ankle joints were a bit stiff and painful last night. Next 'canter' will be Sunday morning.

handlemecarefully · 22/07/2005 22:22

P.S. I'm hugely excited because I have just enrolled for a 10km run (for Cancer Research) in the grounds of a Stately home in Kingston Lacey (Dorset)on 30 October.

Can I go on Gizmo's list now, can I ? can I ?

emmatmg · 23/07/2005 20:07

Oh, oh, oh, oh, and I forgot to say yesterday but gym instructor asked me if I wanted to join the running/treadmill class!!!

I said I doubt I'm good enough, certainly couldn't run for 1 hour but he insisted I was and that the class would be like circuits of running, some uphill, some flat, fast, slow etc etc.

God, never thought I'd be runner!

chuffed!

Arabica · 24/07/2005 18:17

Hello! That must have felt fantastic, emma. The class sounds really good because you can run at your own pace, slowing down and speeding up your treadmill when you need to. As opposed to going out on a group run where you might over-exert yourself to keep up with the rest & risk an injury.
Have now completed first three sessions of 'back to basics' walk/run programme for absolute beginners, and am feeling very pleased with myself as have had no twinges from my back. Next week it's alternating run two minutes, walk one minute. On yesterday's session really felt i could have run for a lot longer. Which is just as well as the 5km race I entered is in just 7 weeks time.

Twink · 25/07/2005 09:08

emmatmg · 25/07/2005 19:05

I ran for 30 minutes without stopping today.

3.3 miles.

We're going on holiday in 2 weeks and I'm going to try and go for a run every morning. How long do you think I need to go for to maintain what i've achieved so far? Not bothered about improving it, just don't want to lose any stamina/performance.

HA ha ha listen to me.....stamina and performance, I seem to think I'm super human

emmatmg · 27/07/2005 17:50

hello, me again.

Anyone running in the cancer research 10k at Hampton court palace on the 4th of September?

I am!!!!

I just entered and am so excited

Arabica · 28/07/2005 01:35

Well done Emma. I am no expert because frankly I have never got to the 'run 30 mins' stage for long enough to contemplate 10 whole km, but there is a training planner you can download from cancer research uk with ideas for training schedules etc; most programmes I have seen are all about a bit of variety--easy run one day, bit of interval or fartlek (speed play, varying speed on a whim) training the next.
I'm going to run on my holiday too--where are you going?

emmatmg · 28/07/2005 08:36

Morning Arabica, I was beginning to think I'd bored you all to tears with my wittering and you'd started a new secret runners thread....ha ha only joking. It actually that you all have lives beyond the keyboard, I'm very jealous......hehehehe

We're going to the Isle of wight, 2 weeks in a caravan, hopefully the weather won't be too hot as I'll really struggle otherwise. It doesn't look likely at the moment, does it?
I'm planning on getting us all down on the beach (which is less that 500 meters from the caravan) in the evening so that DH can entertain the boys with sand castles etc and I can run back and forth. I'll alternate that with running from camp site down to the villiage and back as this is will be up and down hill.
There is a training schedule on the Cancer Research site but I haven't had a chance to read it properly yet. I'm hoping I won't have to adapt my holiday running plans too much as I'm really looking forward to running on the beach and village.

Arabica · 28/07/2005 23:23

I've got some horrible virus at the moment so I haven't been running since Sunday. All being well I will be running around Reykjavik (well, a very small bit of it) by the end of next week.

handlemecarefully · 29/07/2005 00:21

emmatmg,

You're enthusiasm is infectious!

Boo hoo Twink you missed me off the latest list [tearful emoticon]. I'm 30 October 10k at Kingston Lacy

Have been running 5k regularly for a while now, but at last managed to get it under 30 minutes - i.e. 29 mins 56 seconds (only just but it's good enough for me!)

handlemecarefully · 29/07/2005 00:22

Going on holiday to Iceland Arabica?

emmatmg · 29/07/2005 17:51

Oh, HMC you made my day saying that.

Thankyou

Twink · 30/07/2005 13:51

Some great reports here, keep it up ladies.

I finally managed to run on a treadmill for 30 mins for the first time in 3 years, and decided to go for it big time & stayed on until I'd done 10km - fastest time ever too. Can't wait to get back to being outside though, that said, shouldn't complain, I'm having a great holiday

Arabica · 30/07/2005 23:21

yes I am off to Iceland next week! Next year I would love to do the marathon there (walking not running!) it takes place at midnight, in full daylight.

fionagib · 31/07/2005 18:07

have a fab time arabica!! with school hols it's been v v hard to fit in any runs. out on average twice a week... we're off to devon tonight for a week, to stay with friends (one of our friends runs so am taking me running gear... not sure we'll be able to tear ourselves away from the wine tho..)
Thanks for reassuring words re half marathon girls
prettyb - think my tactic is gonna to take it very very slowly, at least for first hour. I really have to get off me lazy a*rse.

DissLocated · 01/08/2005 13:59

Emma - you put me to shame! My 'getting back into running' plans went to pot due to my holidays the last 2 weeks, however, yesterday I managed to drag myself out for a run, the first in about 2 years (due to pregnancy followed by baby care and general laziness) and was pleased to do 5 mins run followed by 1 min walking 3 times. I actually feel OK today as well so the plan is to increase my running time by 1 min each time I go out.

Great story Twink btw, I have at least a stone to lose and am hoping to run it into oblivion!

handlemecarefully · 02/08/2005 12:58

Disslocated - you'll soon get back into it.

On Sunday I ran for 60 minutes to see how far I could get. I managed to keep going and didn't stop, but did run rather slowly at times! Covered 9.1km so that was a boost since I need to do 10K on my run at Kingston Lacey on 30 October.

Would like to do the 10K in under 60 minutes. How is the best way to achieve this?

Gobbledigook · 02/08/2005 13:09

Can I join this thread?

Myself and 2 friends have decided to take up running (one friend is interested in raising money for CF as a friend of hers has a very ill little boy with CF) and want some races to do.

I ran a lot in my teens (was a Sale Harrier!) but haven't done so for yeeeeeeaaars! Might start to replace some of my morning swims with some treadmill runs.

Gobbledigook · 02/08/2005 13:14

Can I get fit enough to run 10K by 11th Sept do you think?

I swim 3-4 times a week and have no weight to lose if that helps your assessment!

Gobbledigook · 02/08/2005 13:15

Not bothered about times at this point - would just like to complete it!

potty1 · 02/08/2005 14:00

GDG - crikey didn't think that 10k was that close - I've mixed it up with the one at Weston Park I think .

If you've run in the past I think you could do it - I have a running mate who joins us sometimes and she ran lots as a 'young' woman, she always seems to hold a good base level of fitness. Makes me .

The Runners World site has some 6 week training plans. And get some decent shoes.

Good Luck.

Hi to everyone else BTW - back off my hols, did zilch running .

Gobbledigook · 02/08/2005 14:19

Thanks Potty1. I think I could do it but I don't think my friend could and I'm not keen on running it alone. Will have to look for another one. There's a Macclesfield half marathon but there's no way I could do that this year! Will try and work up to it though.

Good excuse to get nice new trainers! Will look on the runners world website for tips!

ajmum · 02/08/2005 14:44

Can I raise an embarrassing issue? I have been 'training' for the GNR. I have run the London Marathon and the GNR previously, though not for years. I gave birth 15 months ago and, while most runs are fine, some runs bring about a bit of a Paula moment. I'm worried that with a run of 13 miles, I'll have some...ahem... leakage... Of course, I'll wear some 'padding' just in case but can anyone else relate? Guess I should do more pelvic floor exercises!
