Hi everyone, and congrats to those who did so well over the weekend. I was trying to post a new message on the runners thread, but couldn't because I think there were too many messages (over 800). I have a beginner's question. I ran (walked/ran) everyday for 1 week, then missed 1 week, and then went out this morning, and found that I could not run at all. My ankles are in severe pain when I run, but strangely do not hurt at all when I walk. So I ended up walking the whole way. I just bought new trainers - but I can't imagine that's the problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

gizmo, my knee ache after I've run, and not really at all during(maybe a minute or so to start with but not constant) so I guess it's just my body getting used to it....

That's good.

lapsedrunner · 18/07/2005 12:57

Haven't been here in a while (haven't run much but thats another excuse) so welcome to all newcomers.

Prettybird - how are you getting on with your MBT shoes, any miracles to report? My birthday is coming up in Aug so was thinking about dropping massive hints to dh about a pair!

bumptobabies - normal buggy might be alright for a walk/jog schedule but if you are serious you need a proper jogging 3 wheeler i.e. fixed front wheel and the bigger the wheel the better (smoother ride). Lots around but I swear by my In-Step 10k Ultimate, that being said I have found myself getting much more use out of it for serious off road walking.

bumptobabies · 18/07/2005 15:44

great thanks,i had a buggy like that but donated it to a stoky charity jumble never mind.

emmatmg · 18/07/2005 22:12

I did the 5mins run/2mins walk tonight at the gym and found it quite easy.

Slowed my pace slightly and was in a better state(as in pulse rate and breathing) then when I've run a less time.

I think I'll go up one step to 6run 1walk on wednesday rather than wait until next week, do you think that will be ok?
I really didn't struggle at all, infact I was doing so well I ran for the last 9 minutes without the scheduled walk.

Bloody knees feel like i've run 3000 miles though.

potty1 · 18/07/2005 22:54

Emma - push on with the schedule if you feel OK - but make sure you take the rest days, and don't increase too much too soon. As far as the knees go, are you wearing decent running shoes? I take Cod Liver Oil too and it definitely helps my old joints .

Hmc - it's frustrating when someone who hasn't trained comes along and funds it sooooo easy isn't it? I have a friend who runs with me occasionally and whatever distance/route I do she just breezes through. She just seems to have a decent base level of fitness that she doesn't have to work at .

I've got my last 'Swishy swashy' race tomorrow night, thank goodness!!

Gizmo · 19/07/2005 08:49

Potty1, doesn't the last one involve.....a BEAR!!!!

fionagib · 19/07/2005 10:26

Hi everyone
Just back from hols, am pleased to report that I hauled myself out for three runs (a bit weedy in a whole fortnight, but wine was just too tempting...) and now realise that the scottish half marathon is looming HORRIBLE close... can barely run 50 mins at the mo ... but am determined to do it even at a slow shuffle...

fionagib · 19/07/2005 10:27

ps yeah am still off the fags coddy

handlemecarefully · 19/07/2005 13:56

What's a swishy swashy race Potty1?

I dragged myself off to the Physio gym at work (work in a hospital) at lunch time, because it is available to staff from 12.30 to 1.30 (when there are no clinical sessions on)...but as it is mostly a patients area there is only one treadmill.

A rather eccentric older lady (member of staff) was monopolising it, 'running' at about 8km per hour in a purple leotard and bare feet!

Managed to get on in the end and did 20 minutes (didn't want to hog it any longer) at 10 km per hr - which is a wee bit faster than usual.

Where is the Scottish half marathon fionagib? - hopefully not somewhere too hilly?

potty1 · 19/07/2005 15:08

Have you read 'Going on a bear hunt' hmc?

I've been doing this series of three 5k races in aid of a special school near to us. The first race was over the most muddy, hellish up & down off road route they could find. I spent most of the time on my hands and knees up the slopes and on my bum coming down! Gizmo christened it the Swishy-swashy race after a line in the book

The route has stayed the same but it's much improved now the weathers drier (except for the 50 or so steps at the end). Wish me luck!

handlemecarefully · 19/07/2005 15:41

Good luck!

Actually yes I have read the book - it's on dd's bookshelf, but I just didn't click!

fionagib · 19/07/2005 19:17

It's in glasgow hmc, pretty flat i think, tho god knows how am gonna be ready for it in eek, 7 weeks. Will see prettybird whooshing past me!

Arabica · 19/07/2005 23:09

Hi, someone asked where the other walk/runners are...and here I am.
I'm recovering from yet another trapped nerve in my back and have been warned to take things slowly building up to the 5km race I have signed up for in Sept. So, after weeks of just doing pilates and v gentle cycle rides, am now doing the most basic of basic training programmes, ie, starting with 1 min running alternating with 90 secs walking, repeat 8 times. Back OK so far, done it twice. Was sure that if I had to stop running once I had started then I would just grind to complete halt, however, that's not happening and feel I am running with better form and not all slumped over, because it's only for a minute at a time. Although it's weird how long the running minutes last!

Arabica · 19/07/2005 23:10

Who runs with an i-pod or similar? Do they ever skip?

handlemecarefully · 20/07/2005 09:52

Just what I wanted to know Arabica...I'm sure that feisty music on an ipod would spur me on to run better. I'd like to know if they are any good too.

Sorry about your trapped nerve. Sounds painful.

emmatmg · 20/07/2005 10:15

I've just got a normal mp3 player and it's fine, doesn't skip at all.

I have found it's makes the run easier too although sometimes it can be a distraction too. I think I need to work out how to download different music then it won't bug me.

Gizmo · 20/07/2005 15:04

Hi Arabica

We haven't done this for a while:

Gizmo · 20/07/2005 15:05

Anyone seen Bump?

potty1 · 20/07/2005 20:16

Just popped in to say 'bye bye' for a couple of weeks....off to sunny Majorca tomorrow. keep on plodding!

handlemecarefully · 20/07/2005 23:04

Have a lovely holiday potty1 - don't forget to get a couple of runs in...

Did a 5km run tonight in a new personal best 31 mins 15 secs (previous pb 31 mins and 51 secs, 2 weeks ago). Celebrating now with 2 cans of lager. I'm sure that's not what you are supposed to do!

Gizmo · 21/07/2005 09:12

HMC - I always think the post run celebration is the main point of running! Hope you're feeling proud of your very respectable PB.

Have a nice hol, Potty. I am off to the rather less glamorous north Norfolk coast for a week tomorrow, but what the hell, it's still a week out of the office, which I badly need at the moment!

fionagib · 22/07/2005 02:03

finding it v hard to run in summer hols with kids being around and a whole different routine (in scotland kids started hols 3 weeks ago) but managed 50 min evening run tonight was lovely.... hard but but sunny and evening-ish.

Can I ask experts on here if I can get up tohalf marathonby sept 7? I woukd really love to do it.

fionagib · 22/07/2005 02:04

ps the furthest I've run is 10k. Don't care what timer I do the half marathon in, just wanna run it all, if poss, even at snail pace.

Prettybird · 22/07/2005 14:29

Not much time as I'm rushed off my feet at work plus I'm off on holiday on Sunday, so trying to get everything cleared up before I go.

Lapsedrunner: I can't say yet for sure whther the MBTs have "reduced my cellulite" (but wishful thinking would like to say that it has )- but my pelvic floor does definitely seem to have strengthened.

There are a couple of Pilates exercise that I used to truggle with that I am now able to do, and my "front" pelvic florr muscles (which were the ones that had been damaged) do defintitely seem to more "engaged" automatically.

Fioanagib - I've only just startyed running again after the 10k . it is possible to train for it in 7 weeks - you already have the 10k base. Just be sensible and don't try to blast it. Do as I say and not as I do, as I owuld really like to come in in under 2 hours (damn pride) - but really need to get out and get more miles under my belt.

I did 44 minutes earlier this week - and my knees told me about it! But I am try to get out at least 3 times a week and building up gain gradually.

emmatmg · 22/07/2005 21:11

ooooh, I'm a very proud runner tonight.

Tried the 6run 1walk thingy(as per runners world) at the gym the other night but had to stop because I had awful stomach cramps. I came home in the end as I felt rough.

Tonight I tried again, but was reading the subtitles on the gym TV's and went past the 6 mins so I just carried on. I walked for 2 mins at 13 mins(wasn't planning it to be that long but gym instructor started chatting) then ran for the rest of the 30 mins.

Upped the pace with 2 minutes to go and ran 3 miles in 30 minutes.

I'm hoping that without the walking I could have made it to about 3.2m which I think is 5k.

30 mins for 5 k, that's quite good I think.......maybe??
