For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Has anyone else noticed Strange Carrot Phenomena? All the carrots I buy atm rot really quickly and suddenly - usually carrots will last ages, but the last 3 lots have gone all slimy within a couple of days.

I feel like writing an angry letter to whoever is in charge of carrots.

TooTicky · 29/04/2009 19:13

Yes that is sensible Sb.I get a bit hung upon themhaving veg and it tends to get repetitive as they are not very adventurous en masse.

Boco, yes,I have noticed it.And if you don't oust the rotters straight away they smell appalling.

Guadalupe · 29/04/2009 19:14

keep them in the fridge nicely wrapped in some kitchen roll

SuperBunny · 29/04/2009 19:15

I have the same problem with grapes atm. Who do we write to?

Also, why are bananas so straight these days? They look slightly curved but when you peel them they are completely straight - it is the stalky bit giving the illusion of curviness. I don't want straight bananas

SuperBunny · 29/04/2009 19:18

TooT, I think sometimes food is more important than fretting over F&V. I know this is not the thread to say that on but, well, it's easy to get caught up in nutrition when actually, sometimes people just need to eat. I am sure that, in general, your DC get plenty of F&V.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 29/04/2009 19:18

Yes, yes, yes to the carrots and grapes. Carrots have only been lasting about a week in the fridge and grapes even less.

Wasn't there some EU directive/rule about banana's having to be straight??

banana x2
raspberries
dried fruit
cucumber
salad x2
peas
grapes

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 29/04/2009 19:19

Toot - hiding veg in pasta sauce is a good way of getting veg into them.

SuperBunny · 29/04/2009 19:22

I'm not even in the fecking EU and they have spoiled my bananas. I can see how they are easier to pack into crates but grrrr. Bananas are meant to be CURVED.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 29/04/2009 19:23

Oh yeah, I forgot where you were

TooTicky · 29/04/2009 19:25

Yes SB,you are probably right

Lemur, given that twoof mine are tomatophobes, pasta sauce is challenge enough. I do sneak lentils in though.

What else can you do withpasta? Nothing too dairy-based...

AporkalypseNow · 29/04/2009 19:27

tis me, Molly. Sorry for name change - I have been surrounded by numpties in a red-toppedfuelled swine flu panic all day, and it is very very wearying.

sorry for food woes and quiche crises.

My kids only eat around 6 different meals...you'd think they'd get bored but no....

Mits - yes, exactly, the underlying issue constantly gets ignored because of his reaction! It is never unprovoked.
Last time I was called in, I had to remind the head that he was actually being bullied, which might explain why he had refused to go outside at playtime, and subsequently roared at a classroom assistant...

SuperBunny · 29/04/2009 19:29

Pesto! It goes well with broccoli, peas, olives, any green veg actually.

You can have normal pesto made with basil or:

Nettles
Spinach
Red Pepper
Sundried tomato

Instead of pine nuts you can use walnuts or almonds.

Guadalupe · 29/04/2009 19:29

On here or in rl, molly?

We have been joking about zombie plans here. I said it would be just my luck if there is armageddon as soon as I get to 10 stone.

I have bought plenty of sauerkraut just in case.

Guadalupe · 29/04/2009 19:31

Dh is in London.

There is a case in London you know.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 29/04/2009 19:31

pesto pasta
pasta bakes
spinach and ricotta canellonni (sp)

It's probably looking at authentic Italian pasta recipe's as they don't use tomatoes quite as much as we seem to.

SuperBunny · 29/04/2009 19:32

Also, tapendae - if they'll eat black olives. I bet you can make all sorts of variations on that.

And Soup.

TooTicky · 29/04/2009 19:35

Hmm.I can dopesto without the cheese, can't I?I have done it before.
Might experiment.

Bakes, yes. If they will eat them.

Haven't done cannelloni for years...

TooTicky · 29/04/2009 19:36

No,none of us do olives.I do try them from time totime but they are too bizarre for me.

Oh Molly, for ds

FrannyandZooey · 29/04/2009 19:49

god i am half dropping off here
[bleary]

raspberries
apple
banana
raisins
mixed roasted veg
broccoli
sprouted beans

hmm that is poor isn't it
if i can stay awake i will eat more things

SuperBunny · 29/04/2009 19:52

Yes, pesto without cheese is ok.

You can use nutritional yeast if you like but I prefer not to.

FrayedKnot · 29/04/2009 20:05

Hello

TooT pesto sans fromage a really good idea, also pasta with veg but no sauce, e.g. courgettes, squash, aubergine, peppers, broccoli, even sweetcorn, etc (and cheese for those who want it) - those who don;t eat cheese could scatter some pine nuts and seeds on as well, witha smidge of olive oil?

I think the idea of one basic with a selection of toppings etc sounds really a very good option. What about jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings laid out on the table?

DS behaviour has been apalling again today.
He doesn;t seem to have settled back into school so well this term. During the holidays he was fine

I feel somewhat weary.

AporkalypseNow · 29/04/2009 20:34

Guad, in RL....

Don't get me wrong, Dh and I have a finely-honed Zombie plan ourselves

But dealing with an aquaintance of mine in the playground who started shrieking about school closures, Armageddon and how best to kill herself if she started coughing to avoid contaminating her children etc is Not Helpful. Especially not when she spouts this shit in front of my children.....

This was after spending the day in a small office with Sun-reading Voice of Doom. ''It says here that......''

AporkalypseNow · 29/04/2009 20:35

Plums
Bananas
Lentil soup with carrots and onions
Tomatoes
Celery
popcorn
Pineapple juice

FrannyandZooey · 29/04/2009 20:47

and a buggery bollocks dilemma
sorry to not go into detail
but if you accidentally (REALLY accidentally, not accidentally on purpose) found out something that you obviously weren't meant to know, that is a bit of an issue now that you DO know, do you mention it or try to forget that you know
it's kind of more an issue that it was a secret, than anything else
oh no that is useless isn't it? you can't answer
