Bone Marrow Donation Sign-up Thread. For Mr Lisad!!!!! Please keep bumped!!!!

hockeypuck · 12/03/2009 14:53

For those who have seen the thread today. Mr Lisad123 (who is also Misdee's bil) has been diagnosed with chronic leukaemia.

I think we need another MN donation mission. Is everyone on the bone marrow donation register? I know we all signed up for the organ donor register when Misdee's Peter was needing a transplant, but the bone marrow donation register is separate.

My DH donated his bone marrow last month to a lady in the UK with chronic leukamia and she is doing well.

I hope everyone will join and make sure they get their blood tissue-typed to see if they are a match. All people between 18-40 years old are considered. Young men in this age group are especially useful due to a high concentration of stem cells in the bone marrow.

Details on:-

Anthony Nolan Trust

or for those in Wales:-

Welsh Blood Service

Please sign up and please keep this thread bumped because I'm away from PC all evening today.

ARGH that is a crap website isn't it? It's very complicated and you can't fill in forms online. How very annoying.

misdee · 12/03/2009 14:56

thanks hockeypuck.

lisad123's dh has, they think, chronic myeloid leukemia. he went for blood tests as they thought he may have had coelalics. this was the last thing we expexcted. he was called in last night as his white cell could was 382, for a heal;thy person it should be between 4 and 11. he has had a bone marrow aspiration done this afternoon, i guess to see how things have progressed. they suspect this has been going on for around a year.

Chemo is being started today.

morningpaper · 12/03/2009 14:57

oh wait there is a link on the website but it's not clear

I think you can join online here

Habbibu · 12/03/2009 14:59

Worth noting that if you're pregnant you can't join until the baby is 1. So bookmark it!

morningpaper · 12/03/2009 15:04

Hockeypuck can you link to your thread about your DH's experience? How did he find it?

LittleMissNorty · 12/03/2009 15:12

here is one thread that I contributed to.

I donated BM in 1994, and found it a very positive experience. It is very simple to get on the register and a privilege to help someone...

The Anthony Nolan BM Trust are fantastic and help those donating through every part of the process.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 12/03/2009 15:18

I'm on the register.

My friend's little girl has a rare type of leukaemia and had a bone marrow transplant about 3 months ago.

If you give blood you can get put on the British Bone Marrow register next time you donate - they take a bit extra blood.

I'm assuming they use both registers when searching for a donor, is that right hockeypuck.

EldonAve · 12/03/2009 15:27

quick bump from me

LilRedWG · 12/03/2009 15:30

This is terrible news! Poor lisad123 and family. It is so unfair that some families seem to get all the crap.

Misdee - please give her all our best.

I'm off to sign the register now.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/03/2009 15:31

I read this and my heart sank at yet more crap being heaped on your family.

Anyway MNHQ can make this a sticky for a while.

Sadly am not eligable and neither is DH.

fryalot · 12/03/2009 15:35

neither me nor dp are eligible, but I'll deffo bump the thread again.

Thinking of Mr.LisaD

SparklyGothKat · 12/03/2009 15:36

bugger, I offered my blood to test today and I can't donate, I don't weigh enough (1/2 stone under the 8 stone guideline) I want to be tested, its my BIL FFS!!!

SparklyGothKat · 12/03/2009 16:05

bump, as I can't donate

misdee · 12/03/2009 16:09

sgk some of her excess flab

i cant donate as dd4 is only 4months old. dont think dh can either due to his own heart transplant and medication

CompareTheMeerkat · 12/03/2009 16:12

I can't work out if you can donate if you have had a blood transfusion, but will go through the registration process and try and find out.

CharleeInChains · 12/03/2009 16:13

I shall ask to be put on the register next time i give blood (which should be soon). There are no AN clinics near me.

VinegarTitsCoveredinChocolate · 12/03/2009 16:16

I have registered on the website, will fill in the form when i get home from work

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 12/03/2009 16:22

I've been registered for a while, really hope you gets lots of other people to sign up. What awful news.

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 12/03/2009 16:23

I have been registered for over 10 years. Hope more people sign up.

CompareTheMeerkat · 12/03/2009 16:29

Have aubmitted online form - it asked about blood donating and whether I had had a transfusion, so will see what happens.

wannaBe · 12/03/2009 16:35

doesn't donating bone marrow involve having to undergo a general anesthetic?

TheProvincialLady · 12/03/2009 16:41

I won't be able to donate as I don't weigh enough and have a young baby, but I hope anyone who can will join.

SparklyGothKat · 12/03/2009 16:43

i think only if you are called wannabe

GColdtimer · 12/03/2009 16:47

I went on the register after my friend was diagnosed with Leukeamia 18 months ago.

spongebrainbigpants · 12/03/2009 16:52

Dh and I have both been on the list since we were in our early 20s.

I hope you recruit lots of new donors.

Devastating news for lisa and her family .
