DH been unwell for a while and I finally dragged him to GP on Saturday. GP sent him for blood tests that were taken yesterday morning. Had a phone call at 9.30pm last night saying his White cell count was very very high and he needed to go to hospital and they were expecting us.
They rechecked blood and very very high (normal is 4-11, DH had 382!)
They have done chest xray but they just said they think its a blood disorder and something about bone marrow! Of course we are now thinking leukemia
I have had all of one hours sleep as didnt get home till 4am and baby woke at 5am. Im going back once seen DD1 off to school, and they said the hemotologist will be round first thing and we should have more answers then.
Anyone know anything other than cancer that it could be? Docs werent willing to say a lot last night tbh.
We all have to wear masks and gowns and his in isalation!
Help im panicing

am bacl. lisa's dh has had bone marrow aspiration done and is starting chemo later today.

he has, they think, chronic myeloid leukemia. its the rarer one, and although they cant cure it, he could be in remission for years.

Lisa I am so sorry

I hear 5yr survival is around 90% which has to be good

At least he is in the right hands now.

Kewcumber · 12/03/2009 14:29

I beleive that you can indeed live for decades with chronic leukaemia. Not really a consolation though is it, when this morning you had no idea there was anything wrong.

so sorry (again)

sympathy for bone marrow aspiration too - it bloody hurts

I think we need another MN donation mission. Is everyone on the bone marrow donation register? I know we all signed up for the organ donor register when Misdee's Peter was needing a transplant, but the bone marrow donation register is separate.

My DH donated his bone marrow last month to a lady in the UK with chronic leukamia and she is doing well.

I hope everyone will join and make sure they get their blood tissue-typed to see if they are a match. All people between 18-40 years old are considered. Young men in this age group are especially useful due to a high concentration of stem cells in the bone marrow.

Anthony Nolan Trust

so sorry, what a nightmare for you

hockeypuck · 12/03/2009 14:54

I have started a new thread about the bone marrow donation process. I thought it best to keep this one about supporting Lisad and her family.

Really sorry to hear this, thinking of you x

Lisa's DH had the bone marrow retracted today, he was very brave and didn't swear (I told him if he did, I wouldn't tell  ) I am ok with needles so offered to hold his hand as long as he didn't break mine. Chemo is starting today and he will then be on life long meds to control the cancer as they can't cure it.
