I cried when I read how many failures theres been and applauded hub2dees approach as sometimes theres no point pussyfooting....come on guys! Its got to be done.
I am so so so gutted that theres been vile puffing going on...did you REALLY enjoy any of them. Truely satisfying were they? No No No! Tell you what though...waking up knowing that bastard nicotine monster has got no grip on me whatsoever is liberating. I could touch the sky with the high that im free. No chain round my neck.
Remember that just one is never just one and even if it was, why would you want JUST ONE? Your aim is to STOP FOREVER.

Hi gals. How are we? New house, new babies, non-responsive men. All sounds exciting.

fionagib · 26/04/2005 14:47

At least you HAVE a towel rail cc! (we have one but it's been lying around, not fixed to anything, for 6 years...)

charliecat · 26/04/2005 14:48

He responded in the end. Couldnt quite believe I was having to nag him to leave the blooming towel rail alone for you know what! How you doing almost40?

OP posts:
charliecat · 26/04/2005 14:48

LOL FG, we brought ours the other day so its like a new gadget to him isnt it?

almost40 · 26/04/2005 15:08

I'm ok, cc. Thanks for asking. I have no idea what a 'towel rail' is and what you are talking about, but it all sounds exciting to me . LIfe is that boring for me. I've taken up jogging (running or walking) whatever you want to call it, in an attempt to shed the near 2-stone I've held on to since having DD2. Of course quitting smoking and eating sweets hasn't helped, but I do feel good about the exercise. Aside from the 'towel rail' how are you? Sounds like you may have had a bit of fun with your DH at least.

fionagib · 26/04/2005 17:40

tee hee - the way this conversation's going it sounds like a towel rail is a euphamism for something far more exciting! Which it's not, is it cc?

evansmummy · 26/04/2005 19:58

Sorry, I'm ever so late in joining, and not even sure if I'm allowed here, but I gave up the weed during my pregnancy and since ds was born in december, have gradually been wanting more and more to smoke. We ended up buying 10 this weekend after some particularly bad news, but now I'm like a mad woman - I must smoke. Wnat one even as I type. Can't stop thinking about them. How sad am I ?? How long have you all been ex-smokers, and HOW DO YOU DO IT????

charliecat · 26/04/2005 21:06

Hiya evansmummy you are totally allowed here, everyones welcome!
Some folks here are newer than other but we all have the same problem a current or X addiction to fags...sometimes the topic goes a bit astray, but generally we are here to prop each other up, egg each other on and nag each other into staying fag free Welcome!
I have heard a lot of folks say they started after thier babys were born....the thing with nicotine is just one is aways one too many. Must dash for now as stuff to do but please come back

Oh, Lord, I want to quit SO much. I'm going to be 39 in a couple of weeks and have been smoking on and off since I was about 22. I didn't even manage to properly quit when pregnant with dd though I did get down to about 3 a day. After she was born I thought I'd keep to that but of course I haven't and although I've never gone back to the shocking 30-a-day I was usually on before pregnancy I am smoking 5-10 a day regularly now. Dd's 2 1/2. Every morning I wake up and think how I'll hate myself if I get cancer or lung disease from something so pathetic as smoking. And I'm broke. And I've got asthma. And, well loads of ands. I've read Alan Carr, I know all the reasons to quit and long to feel free from the addiction but I just don't know how to start. I'm a pretty nervy sort of person and fags help me cope with things even though I do know that's just a psychological illusion on my part.

How then do you get yourself in the right frame of mind to do it? The amount of mornings I wake up and lie in bed and think 'today's the day!' then by midday I'm just the same as normal. And I end up going to bed again at night hating myself.

VERY fed up with it.

charliecat · 27/04/2005 11:05

Right you teo newbies, thats EM and MML from now on...ok?! The way to start is to pick a day and the night before you have to smoke all your baccy/fags or drown them ceremoniously in the toilet and then to just NOT SMOKE!
You will suffer awful pangs of...let me get one...oh just one...but all that will happen is just one will turn into just one packet, one week, one month....and your only delaying the process.
Cigarettes do not help with stress, or socialising or ANYTHING. The only reason you smoke is because you are addicted to the nicotine....www.whyquit.com for the mental education you need to give yourself.

PLEASE QUIT

Smokers are a special breed,
who say they have an urgent need
to smoke when bored, or under stress,
from bills, to wills--and life I guess.
And then when sick, or told to quit,
they try, but some have to admit,
they're hooked, and struggle as they might,
the cigarettes are hard to fight.
"Just one wont hurt", they softly say,
trying to find an easy way.
They talk themselves into just one,
then realize the harm is done.
One turns to ten, and then some more.
They smoke as many as before!
Poor lungs complain--they cough and spit.
Say something and they'll have a fit!
Frustration, anger at one's self,
is vented on those trying to help.
"Stop preaching at me all the time,"
is a favorite smoker's line.
"When you complain, I smoke some more.
To calm my nerves is what is for".
The fight goes on, for years sometimes,
with smokers handing out those lines.
While all the time they know they're lying!
Deep down inside they know they're dying!
Some lucky ones can break away,
but others in their grave will lay.
How sad is each one's shortened life!
How lonely for each grieving wife,
or husband, parent, child, or friend,
who suffered with them 'till the end.
An empty void, that once was filled
with vital life, which now is stilled,
remains for those they left behind.
Those left, reach deep inside, and find,
a poultice for their troubled mind.
The memories, both bad and good,
do what no words from others could.
The good ones comfort and bring near,
sweet moments, watered with a tear.
The bad ones are a lesson in life,
for parent, child, husband, or wife.
How we use what we have learned,
Will touch the lives of all concerned.
For those of us who still will smoke,
remember what it's like to choke,
and struggle for each gasping breath,
until released in peaceful death.
Consider those who're left behind,
Quit now, and surely you will find,
that with God's help, your choice to live,
to loved ones as a gift can give.
