For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Oh and I thought milkshakes after school might be good too?

TooTicky · 06/02/2009 15:11

H ave given up on catching up.

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 15:11

Milkshakes v good, but use loads of milk, I already get through 18 pts of whole milk a week, cos DS is milk monster!

One good thing I did was plum compote, just stew with sugar and bit of water, and pick out stones, v easy, and lovely with cereal or fresh fruit for brekfast, and also with other stuff as a pudding, keeps for ages too.

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 15:12

Got to get DD from school, see you later.

littlerach · 06/02/2009 15:13

Lemur, jamaican beans:
225g dried black beans, soaked overnight, drained and rinsed.
1 bay leaf
Olive oil
Onion, finely chopped.
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 teaspoon mustard
1 tablespoon black treacle
Small bunch thyme, finely chopped.
Small red chilli, deseeded and chopped
400ml veg stock
Red and yellow peppers, sliced
1kg butternut squash, chopped.

Boil beans and bay leaf rapidly for 10 mins, removing scum from surface.
Reduce heat and simmer whilst covered for 30 mins, drain and set aside.
Fry onion and garlic until softened.
Add all other ingredients and give good stir.
Cover, bring to boil, then uncover and simmer for 45 mins (until squash is tender and sauce is thick and yummy).

Suitable for freezing.

Very nice.
Though I get cross with chopping squash.

Milkshakes good, 100. Or smoothies?

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:16

My god, I love this FOCUS.

Right am having LR's bean thing for next week. And Wombling's Plum Compote for next week too. I am going to be Compote Queen. I think v. good too Wombling as can have for breakfast, pudding etc like you say, or just snack with yoghurt or something. I hope I can make a big enough jar. I will get dispirited if it all goes in 3 hours.

It's exciting isn't it?

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:18

I'm also going to copy down Boco's [awe] list. It was very impressive.

BBBee · 06/02/2009 15:30

oh 100 you are so good - this is so good. I am very excited - the focus is contagious.

I am going to print boco's list out and put it on my fridge (minus findus crispy pancakes unfortunately)

this is good and proper and right.

this is focus and vitamins and health.

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:38

Yes, but it's time isn't it? If there wasn't snow, and if there was school - well I'd still be there, pushing the internet order without thinking through, and then wondering why we were all starving by Thursday, and why there was no fruit for breakfast.

I get quite hysterical about time when I think about it. It makes me run down narrow corridors.

TooTicky · 06/02/2009 15:39

stir fry (1)
apple (half)

Boco · 06/02/2009 15:41

The sausage and apple thing is good.

Fry an onion
Add celery, courgette, pepper, carrot and whatever else
Slice a couple of diced cooking apples
Add a tin of tomatoes and about half a pint of apple juice, some tomato puree, grill some quorn sausages, cut them into thirds and add, then reduce it all down. Serve with baked potato or mash. Is lovely and tangy and appley.

Boco · 06/02/2009 15:42

obviously the slicing of diced apples is a slice and a dice too far, and would be the equivalent of grating, which is not necessary or proper.

BBBee · 06/02/2009 15:46

oh i am going to have that today - i love it. I am going to the co op in a minute. it is going to be lovely.

[awe]
[still]

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:49

Oh that sounds v. nice indeed, thank you. Okay, am adding that for week after next. Next week we are having sausage and bean pot pie, it's a bit like that with veg, butter beans but without sliced diced apples, and with a potato lid.

This is much better than last weeks list. Was all pork chops and lamb cutlets and meat and three veg, and packets of biscuits. And no compotes or flapjacks or potato lids.

I might need a sticker just for the thinking you know. And the list making.

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:49

What have we been DOING for three years? We took this thread for granted.

TooTicky · 06/02/2009 15:54

100x, please tellme about the potato lid.

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:57

You just slice (not diced) potatoes and lay them overlapping on the top - to make a lid. Sometimes you need to add stock or melted butter to the top. It's one of those fiddly silly but nice looking things I like to do when I think about it, which I haven't thought about for two years or so.

mollyroger · 06/02/2009 15:59

special sticker for 100

TooTicky · 06/02/2009 15:59

Oh I see. I was imagining some cunning potato pastry. Do they generally cook through okay? Potatoes tend to be stubborn for me.

BBBee · 06/02/2009 16:37

toot - my dad does it - it is fab as the potatoes absorb all the juices. You have to slice them really thin or par boil them.

very very very nice and wintry and lovely.

TooTicky · 06/02/2009 16:47

Hm, perhaps I should try parboiling next time. Do you parboil before you slice? [dim]

BBBee · 06/02/2009 16:49

no - if you parboil you can get away with about 1cm potatoes.

um, wait for 100 though because i have never actualy done it, just talked to other people about it so I can pretend I have (applies to lots of things actually).

BBBee · 06/02/2009 16:50

slice then boil

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 16:50

TooT, if you slice first then parboiling is much quicker, and you can slice really thin

TooTicky · 06/02/2009 16:55

thanks.

hello Wombling, is dd better?
