For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Toot - I NEED the chocolate crumble topping recipe. Saying that it's probably just choc chunks in a normal crumble topping isn't it?!

For those with a sweet tooth, smother caramel sauce over your apples, then put the crumble mix on top. Toffee apple crumble, delish.

Someone mentioned about jamaican beans and yes I would like the recipe please.

I'm trying to wean dh off meat. It's veryh difficult. I's be quite happy to only have it a couple of times a week, but for him a meal isn't a meal without meat. Neanderthal.

mollyroger · 06/02/2009 12:51

just read that back and thought I had typed I chicken breast fed them....ew.sounds fowl, doesn't it?

Guadalupe · 06/02/2009 12:52

I'd like the recipe too.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/02/2009 12:52

tee hee

Guadalupe · 06/02/2009 12:53

Boco - what do you have on the five veggie nights?

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/02/2009 12:54

Oh why did you have to mention cheese on toast

BBBee · 06/02/2009 12:57

I just had cheese adn tomatoes on toast with brown sauce.

4 tomatoes.

mollyroger · 06/02/2009 12:58

bacon mushroom and tommyto sarnies here.

Guadalupe · 06/02/2009 13:09

I haven't looked at portion sizes for ages either. I have a rough idea but underestimated some of them. Didn't realise it had to be two kiwis for eg, and 14 cherries? The ones I had were huge, don't think you could eat 14 every time.

I suppose soup counts as one same as juice?

Cherries
rhubarb
banana
broccoli
orange juice
dates

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/02/2009 13:21

Where are the cherries grown? and do they taste good?

Guadalupe · 06/02/2009 13:35

Mars, probably.

They do taste nice though, and ds2 loves them.

I might cook a vegetable curry for dinner. Lol, there will be an uprising, and probable attempted excursions to The Golden Fry.

I will fry onion fritters with it to placate them.

Please tell me Totnes was not actually being recommended as a place to live earlier on this week?????

It is full of wrongness.

All the freaks come from Totnes. Of all of my friends, most of whom have degree of oddness / wrongness / criminal leanings / whatever... The very weirdest ones come from Totnes.

Dartington College is there. Another place of weirdness.

Please don't do it.

Also, did you see that thread on here around xmas time? Some superpose article from the Times Life&Style section...

I can find a link if needs be. That sums up Totnes very neatly.

I am not loving this snow. Drove DD to nursery (Bristol to nearlt Bath, usually 35 mins max) it took 4 hours. And the fuckers were colsed. Why there was no msg on the answerphone either at uni or nursery telling us this is beyond me. All her waterproofs and wellies and in fact shoes are there.

Oh sorry, I'm in the wrong bit aren't I...

No F&V. But 4 hours driving surely adds up to 10 mins exercise?

Boco · 06/02/2009 13:57

OB i remember that article! It was very funny, their house was full of shrimping nets and driftwood adn they ate yoghurt out of glass pots. and [awe]

Thanks for googling and looking it up and stuff - i dont think it's damage as it's on her thumb on one had, and two fingers on the other hand and is perfect white lines. Lung infection makes sense.

We're on the cusp of another one right now, the cough is back, - so it could go either way. Consultant appointment next thursday to discuss next step. If this does turn into one, it'll be number 6. Couldn't take her swimming today and she's too ratty to do anything with. My mum said she'd have her for an hour so I can do some work - so I will do some work!

Boco · 06/02/2009 14:06

Guad veg meals include

Spaghetti with puttanesca sauce
Bean chilli
Vegetable korma and rice
stir fry and noodles
risotto - garlic and parmesan and vegetables
pea and mint pasta
roasted vegetable lasagna
chicken and leek pie but made with quorn, with mash and vegetables.
vegetable quiche - broccoli and stilton (my favourite but girls hate)
goats cheese and red pepper tart with new potatoes
spag bol with vegetarian mince
lentil shepherds pie with roasted parsnips and peas
macaroni cheese
borlotti bean casserole with dumplings (we have that a lot and it's good)
quorn sausages and apple stew with a jacket potato

That's about 15, and those are rotated, then we have something with fish, and I often buy one mince. On weeks we have a roast chicken, that will do 2 meals and sandwiches for 2 days, but it's about once a month.

AtillaTheHoney · 06/02/2009 14:23

Pink...I got a supplement!!!!

Had pomegranite and blueberries yummmmmmm!

Zzzzzzzzzz!

BBBee · 06/02/2009 14:28

boco how can you cook all those meals and keep up the twice weekly fish pie? do you do these for breakfast lunch and dinner?

i am a bit [awe]

BBBee · 06/02/2009 14:29

'i am a bit [awe]' is a very bizarre thing to say isn't it.

I might use it as the title of my thesis.

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 14:38

Bizzaro BBee, def, but intriguing.

For the first time in about 10 days I have consumed a relatively respectable amount of F&V, so I can report, phew.

Raisins
Dried pineapple
Sunflower seeds (do they count?)
Apple
Plum
Tomato
Onion
Carrot
Tomato

Prob about 5 portions

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 14:39

As title of thesis I mean

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 14:44

Boco,

Your list of meals sounds fearsomely healthy, seeing as I have just chomped my way through too much choc and a biscuit, I am feeling a bit guilty, and you hve shamed me.

DS has had Chicken pox since sta, poor chap has it in his eyes and is nether reigons, and is simply covered in scabby spots, every time I undress him it is like he has some dreadful skin disease. He is so itchy that he didn't sleep for more than 5 mins at a time Mon and Tuesday, it toko me till Wednesday to realise and give him an antihistamine to calm it down, he was just writhing in his cot and in my arms, and rubbing up against cupboards and walls like Baloo the bear in the jungle book, poor thing.

Tons of snow yest, DD off school and enormous snowman with toast for eyes and apple slices for eyebrows was made.

Guadalupe · 06/02/2009 14:46

Blimey, Boco. [awe] That sounds liek a restaurant I want to go to.

I am making sweet potato and chickpea curry. I am making it up. If I put purple sprouting broccoli in it will it make it bitter?

Boco · 06/02/2009 14:58

Oh i made it all up we only eat findus crispy pancakes and chips with dripping.

womblingalong · 06/02/2009 15:03

I think the broccoli might go a bit soggy and break up Guad, shouldn't be bitter tho.

BBBee · 06/02/2009 15:07

oh boco - how 70s.

'bilemy boco awe' eatery could have a menu where you just order a period - like wartime or seventies or hippy and then the waiter dresses up from that period and plays a theme song.

ahundredtimes · 06/02/2009 15:08

What is apple stew please? It sounds lovely.

Right. I have my New Look week menu planner. It includes less meat, more beans. And snacks - I am going to do flapjacks Moll, thank you, good idea. And a couple of lunches - one is soup, maybe that will last two days? It's not looking cheaper at the minute, but does all include similar ingredients, not totally different ingredients all the time. AND it does include things like melon and mint for breakfast, Granola and a Breakfast Power Smoothie, and rhubarb compote for me and ds2 to eat when we fancy it.

I haven't added any of this up though, it might cost thousands. And I can't believe I can keep this up every week, but I might. It might become habit forming [hopeful]
