For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Lemur if you're making granary surely you can make wholemeal with bits in and was going to suggest similar to Fran for protein - you can get tinned bean salad with dressing on or what about making dip with chick peas/lentils. Or of course ham/cold sausages or eggs cooked night before.

And list wise, I declared 3 this morning and can now add:

sweetcorn, tomato, carrot (2 total)
mini banana muffin
tomatoes in potato bake (should've had onion in too but I didn't have one!)
peas
soya beans

7 so far and I will endeavour to have at least one piece of fruit tonight.

mollyroger · 04/02/2009 18:49

you shall have a fishie, on a little dishie, you shall have a fishie when the boooat comes in!
(sorry, reflex action for a geordie.)

OsmosisBanana · 04/02/2009 19:01

carrots
onion
about a bushel of basil
ditto parsley
sweet pot (oops should add 'ato' for the stoners amongst us)
only 5 but t'cupboards are very bare... It was a trade off - food or 4 days of sander hire.

Mmmm sawdust. Nutritious.

I have bought a skipping rope. I reckon if I can force myself to do a couple of 5 min bursts of that outside 2x a day (once snow stuff has gone back from whence it came) then that'll be A Good Thing.

Thanks Guad, quite excited bout being semi important rather than just a pretender to the throne (nutrition wise - it was never in any doubt in RL )

I shall cure thy progeny of their ills. By swapping them with unafflicted doppelgangers.

Fran - totally feel your pain (no pun intended) with the excema thing. DD's is so fierce atm I almost can't bring myself to look at it / do anything about it

I never knew that bout bulghar wheat

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/02/2009 19:02

I find brown/wholemeal bread in the breadmaker comes out like the weight of a brick. Maybe I could do 75/25 wholemeal/white flour? What is the spelt stuff I keep hearing about?

Anybody ever made Boston Baked Beans?

Ooohhh, I feel like a new woman in this bootcamp.

Sir, yes sir.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/02/2009 19:05

Osmosis - I'm being nosey, tell me more about what you do. Are you a nutritionist already? I made the mistake of asking a nutritionist if they were the same as a dietician. She was mortally offended

OsmosisBanana · 04/02/2009 19:07

Moveit (why Lemur? Old name?) protein in lunch- could you add a cold hard boiled egg instead of a scotch egg? Are you veggie? Humous has protein.

More foods than you think contain protein, it's just that some are complete and some are incomplete and better eaten in combo IYSWIM.

BB on toast full of protein.

Can you do milk products?

Protein, and as a significant by product, iron is v important not just for the obvious reasons but for mood implications and mental ability too.

littlerach · 04/02/2009 19:21

OB, tell us more baout nutrtion.

I was aksing abour protein last week for dd2 as she isn't really eating meat and I had a bad mummy few minutes.

Add to list:
carrots
peas ( i like peas)
sweet pots
broccoli
green grapes

pinkspottywellies · 04/02/2009 19:34

Franny, you are Very Good but TooT did Brave Going to the Doctors. You can have stickers and when you have given up dairy for two weeks you can have a fish (and when my son needs potty training there will be no fish )

OsmosisBanana · 04/02/2009 19:36

proteins - easy sources are animal product based. Dairy produce, fish, ANY animal product.

Also many vegetables are high in protein particularly pulses ie lentils, chickpeas, any kind of bean really. So if you can sneak some into a soup or stew etc you'll bump it up no end.

Nuts I think also good...

The recommended daily ammount of protein is far exceeded in general by the UK population. The general Food Standards Agency advice is as long as you are getting a varied diet (veggie or no) you will get sufficient protein.

In fact the FSA website is really good for general family health / food related advice.

OsmosisBanana · 04/02/2009 19:37

I left Tofu off deliberately. Devils food stuff.

FrannyandZooey · 04/02/2009 19:40

yay another protein is overrated believer
ob, apparently the lemur in madagascar sings i like to move it!

pink, only another day and it will be 2 weeks
don't give me one that easy
make me earn it
i was planning to give up eggs next and maybe [fear]

Ok Franster, when you've done eggs and wheat too you get a fish

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 19:59

Franny.... I am so sorry for this morning..

I am more than a little overwraught.

But thank-you........I don't normally burst into floods of tears at the slightest thing but was deeply worried I had offended you as I have every respect for the true nature of this thread,

Still drinking fluids mostly at the moment, but managed
a couple of juicy pears and
a bowl of the veg laden soup.
tomatoes x2

I have just beeen contacted by a lady who is promoting Aloe Vera, and thinks it might help my oral thrush, which is getting worse despite meds. As well as other issues.

Would you be interested in a copy of the information that she sends? I don't know if it is something you have considered for DS2 already. It is pretty amazing stuff.

Did get out for a walk..

FairLadyRantALot · 04/02/2009 20:13

Franny, glad your ds is improving...it is quite trial and error to find what works for the individual...Oilatum forinstance always made all of us worse, and stuff...Diprobase on the other hand was brill for us...and stuff like that, whereas E45...well..that just made everything more inflamed...
and lol at you wanting a glass fish....
and yes, for moorish chickpeas it just goes all in da pan (bar sweetcorn, which is added later) and that is that....supereasy and fast and lovely

pink, I know, I know...I actually do know that one ...basically brown bread is just made with ordinary white flour and dyed....whereas wholemeal is actually made from wholemeal flour ....do I get a sticker?

Anyways, considering to have an apple and some satsumas...than I would be at 10...yeah!

TooTicky · 04/02/2009 20:23

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 04/02/2009 21:07

FairLadyRantALot · 04/02/2009 21:10
