Original post by the lovely FrannyandZooey

For anyone who wants to boost their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - If you don't normally eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 mins is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restictions on what you eat as long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving your energy levels and hopefully mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you are getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page.

Can I ask the lentil-weavers a question? Dd has had a cough for over a month. It's not bad, but a bit chesty. She doesn't cough all day, just a bit and mostly at night. But I just realised it's been since before Xmas .
I know if I take her to doc's, they'll give her antibiotics. Should I? If it hasn't shifted yet maybe it's not going to without help. What else can I do?

stuffitllama · 02/02/2009 08:58

Sorry Mango not much experience. How old is she?

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 08:59

Have got a docs appointment and feel if not better, certainly not worse,

I finally get why Mangoes are sometimes that word that shall not pass my lips....I have one that tastes and has the texture of primordial slime.

I can not go to bed as I am expecting a customer who has already been exceptionally kind and do not want to let her down.

Oh, Toot and LR, have a lovely lovely meet up. It will be fab, so for you both...xxxxxxx

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:00

Sounds like asthma to me Mango. DD gets it and mostly at night. You could try an essential oil like pine or something to help clear her tubes.

stuffitllama · 02/02/2009 09:04

hi feather
I lied..forgot that dd also had a long cough in the run up to Christmas

we put it down to pollution but had her tested for asthma .. it DID go away in the end.. any use?

mangolassi · 02/02/2009 09:04

LilR, you and Toot are really funny. You're going to love each other

Nah, buy them from the shop. We used to have some in the old garden, but this works better anyway - they're much better at wielding machetes than me

mangolassi · 02/02/2009 09:07

she's 2.
Asthma, really? feck. That's more serious than I thought. How do you test for asthma?

FrannyandZooey · 02/02/2009 09:10

oh have fun lr and toot!

mango if she was ill eg hot or unhappy i would, yes, otherwise, not unless it got worse

or on another day i would wake up and go "omg she has had it for a month i must get it seen to"
and go

muchos snow here
i have thermals on but silver wellies never turned up in time
we are going out, we may be some time

p.s. good thoughts for everyone worried about things, too many to list right now
x

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:13

DD's has times when it eases.

Your DD could just be slightly prone to that sort of thing and might be something she will grow out of but if it continues in a couple of months I might be tempted to pursue it more.

Another vegger might have more ideas. But for me, the essential oils never do any harm for DD and some of the scents I use are just nice anyway.

We live on a very busy junction so pollution is definately an issue. And people are always leaving theier engines runnning.

H was off the other day and it makes him so angry and is always going out to tell people off.

He said he was glad he wasn't at home during the week as he would be out there having a go at peolpe all the time.

I replied with FAR too much feeling that I was glad as well!!!! ......oops!

mangolassi · 02/02/2009 09:15

See Franny, that's the exact seesaw i'm sitting on...

mangolassi · 02/02/2009 09:18

Was about to say there's no pollution here, but we're just coming to burning season, there'll be smoke everywhere for months...

should I google asthma or will that make me panic unnecessarily? Decisions, decisions

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:22

Oh mango.... it might not be. DD was about two whan she was diagnosed. They mostly trusted my description and I made the inhaler thing a game..( I get it from time to time)

They might get her to exhale into a tube to test what a thing called her 'peak flow' is as it is exhaling that is a key sign. It is not scary or anything.

There are so many different levels and it never stops DD from doing anything and she runs like the clappers and goes jogging with me,

I didn't mean to panic you.

I suppose I am just used to it.

IMO it never harms to reassure yourself by consulting somebody, whichever way you choose to deal with it once you have the information you need.
And please, do not worry unduly. It probably won't be and IF it is is not hard to manage once you are used to it.

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:23

Don't google. Can you phone a nurse informally?

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:23

And I am so sorry.I never intended to worry you.

stuffitllama · 02/02/2009 09:25

testing for asthma
mango the doctor couldn't hear anything when he listened to my daughter's chest and he said

the only way is to give her an asthma drug and see if she responds

I demurred slightly (ahem) and he said no really

so we gave her the drug for a week and it did clear up, but being disorganised I didn't go back for any more

but the cough didn't come back ..it was as if it was a bit tubal asthma ish but not really, and the drug just kicked it into touch

actually I do have quite a bit of recent experience! sorry for lack of punctuation and caps etc, am not usually so rubbish

Yes! I forgot to say have a good time Rach and Toot. You need Balckberries to say hello later to us all x

mangolassi · 02/02/2009 09:27

'Sok. But I already googled. Anyway, aren't you supposed to be sick? Are you going mn until you keel over?

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:31

On a practicl note. If she is particularly bad. Have a bath or shower and keep the door of the batroom door closed so that a steamy atmosphere builds up. Let her play in the room with you and the steam will magically clear her tubes.

And the bath or shower will relax you.

DD now loves having a bath and it cures her symptoms and any stress instantly.

mangolassi · 02/02/2009 09:31

x posts, stuffit. Hmm. Random giving of drugs is just the level of care I'd expect from the local hospital, maybe I'll just take her there.

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:32

Mango, this is where it gets difficult because I am hyper to the point of slight mania and my mind is buzzing...I can not stop.

TinySparklyWhiteFeather · 02/02/2009 09:33

It is like my mind is trembling as well

FrannyandZooey · 02/02/2009 09:52

ooh blimey the book is here and i am in it and so is tigerfeet

i wonder if i say anything sensible in it, i haven't yet

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 02/02/2009 09:53

Have a good meet up LR and Toot

Lots of snow here too, 'bout 5 inches I reckon. I'll take ds out in it later, however I only have walking shoes and no wellies. I think I'll be getting wet feet! I love the snow.

mango and twf - an humidifier works really well for dh asthma. He has had asthma since childhood and is as fit as a fiddle. He goes running every week and the asthma doesn't affect him at all. Although I think it helps that he knows his trigger is certain animals.

Oh, and I didn't have food poisoning. DH started being sick last night, and of course he is feeling much worse than I did I am now thinking ds was off his feeds because he had a milder version of what we have got.

Oh yeah, and what is quinoa? I know nothing of these veggie/vegan foods.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 02/02/2009 09:55

Franny - did you get yours from Amazon? I got my despatch confirmation through on Sat, so I'm hoping I get it soon.

mollyroger · 02/02/2009 09:55

I'm only buying it if I'm in it [churlish]

well, I don't have a toddler, do I?

Boco · 02/02/2009 10:06

Very thick snow here too - dd2s preschool is shut, and they're closing the primary school at midday. I've lit a fire and made hot chocolate and dd2 is drawing. Today is my WORK day though, it's so rare to get one atm, it's frustrating.

Have a good time Toot and Rach!

Tiny is it like a virus do you think? Did you get an appointment?

Franny are you goign to the launch tomorrow?
