For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page.

Lully, I'm sorry I missed the bit about it being horrid when the sod got back. I spotted somebody's comment and went looking.

Who knows about nutrition? Fmv? I need some help.

pinkspottywellies · 20/07/2008 10:01

I know about nutrition TooT

BBB I did it with the podcast and then when I could run for about half an hour I would use my own music (although I panicked the first time I did it with out the podcast!!) I have been once with a friend but quite happy to do it on my own. I need to have my stickers on the calendar though so I can see how I've been doing and see if I'm getting lazy and missing sessions!! I've missed a couple of weeks so did a bit of run/walk again yesterday.

Great
Non-animal sources of iron (I know, I know, I should know all this...)
What exactly do I need to eat per day? Just wondering if my tiredness is iron-related.

Tatties · 20/07/2008 10:32

Dried apricots TooT

TooTicky · 20/07/2008 14:07

Thank you Tatties and Bee

Franny, hope the visit is a) better than you expect but b) over quickly.

I have made the broad bean version of hummous with beans I picked this morning
It is very nice. And green.

TooTicky · 20/07/2008 14:09

We are making robots.

pinkspottywellies · 20/07/2008 15:07

Broad beans sounds yum TooT! MIL has some in the garden but I don't think they're quite ready yet.

Franny, I hope your mum's visit goes quickly well

I've just had a phone call from Franny. Unfortunately she's had to go into hospital with Lucian as the midwife didn't like the sound of him not feeding and the way he was crying and things. She was worried he might have picked up an infection.

The hospital are not sure if he has an infection or not but just to be sure they are treating him as if he has which means being on a drip and having blood taken. They will be there for two days.

Poor Franny - she sounds very shell shocked. He has to have some formula and they won't 'allow' co-sleeping so you can imagine it's all very upsetting. Both Franny and her dp feel that really he is fine and they just needed help with the latch and so on but of course they can't say no, we're going home, just in case.

littlerach · 20/07/2008 17:00

Oh god, poor things.
Sounds like a nightmare.

TooTicky · 20/07/2008 17:05

ShockSad

ahundredtimes · 20/07/2008 17:08

Oh no, poor Franny and everyone. How frightening.

[Does he have to have formula? DS1 and DS2 - sadly both in SCBU after birth - had breast milk through a nose thing. I pumped it. Only because a friend was there when they arrived and said 'what formula do you want him to have?' and she intervened. Might be worth suggesting next time she calls?]

Guadalupe · 20/07/2008 17:17

now you mention it, I just assumed she meant formula as she said they wanted to give a bottle and she agreed to a cup or something. I guess she could have meant her milk. I will check and pass that on.

ahundredtimes · 20/07/2008 17:22

Yes, well cup better than a nose thing perhaps as less intrusive. DS1's sucking reflex didn't kick in for a while.

Send her my love.

Guadalupe · 20/07/2008 17:24

I will do.

Were they premature then, your two? Both my younger brothers were very early, 10 and 11 weeks I think. I was in my teens when they were born so I remember SCBU well.

ahundredtimes · 20/07/2008 17:26

No, they were both two weeks late! Just dreadful births, and inhaled meconium, suspected sepsis (ds!) and then ds2 aspirated milk - we think - and we were there for ages because he kept turning blue. I hate SCBU. Hate it. I actually ran down the corridor with dd looking over my shoulder, I was so sure someone was going to tap me on my shoulder and take her off to SCBU.

It's the bleeping.

Tatties · 20/07/2008 17:26

Oh no

Send my love if you speak to her again Guad. Hope they are ok

OsmosisBanana · 20/07/2008 17:46

Right, who wanted to know about nutrition? Have just picked up 2 of my books for Sept...

Good grief...

I bought one - Human Nutrition - A health persepctive all about nutrients, how and where they are absorbed etc etc , a science book basically.

And I bought another about food in society which I though would be more interesting.... No. Am remembering why I didn't finish my economics degree. Fuck off boring. Opened to random page and it was a fricking flow chart of coffee supply.

Anyhoo, any Nutrition q's, I know how to use an index.

filthymindedvixen · 20/07/2008 17:46

just dived in to coo over baby pix (been on boat all weekend) Oh no! Poor, poor Franny and co. I am sure L will be ok, but it's the distress of formula, and being in hosp etc which I am sorry for IYKWIM.
Huge healing hippy hugs and sunshine to you all xxx

Hmm TooT - The body retains only about five percent of the iron from non-animal sources...Orange juice helps absorption of iron.
Whole grain bread
White bread
Peanut butter
Baked beans
Branflakes
Cornflakes
Lentils/soy beans/red kidney beans
Spinach
Broccoli
Green peas
Baked potato with skin
Sesame seed paste (tahini)
Dried apricots
Prune juice

Bbbee · 20/07/2008 17:55

oh no poor franny!

I hope it is sorted soon and they are all back home.

Will let Boco know.

OsmosisBanana · 20/07/2008 17:56

Oh god, did I skip over the bad stuff?

Are Fran and L in hosp?
