advice following tooth extraction - I'm in PAIN!

imaginaryfriend · 16/07/2008 22:44

I've had a troublesome tooth since March and after repeated attempts at root canals I had it removed today hoping I'd finally be pain-free. Unfortunately I'm in such agony this evening I'm worried something is wrong as I've had extractions before and not felt anything like this.

I suspect the blood clot may have come off the wound - if that's the case will it not heal? Will it become infected?

Any advice at all about what I should / could do?

Yes, I've always been bad for asking questions. I drive dd mad!

I really hope you feel better soon. And I promise no more questions.

Slightly less painfull this morning, so I won't be going to dentist as after he'd pulled it about it would be sore again. I'll leave my fate to nature. (And Ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine.)

imaginaryfriend · 24/07/2008 19:44

That's good news goober. HOpefully this will all be a yucky memory at some point.

Glad to hear that you're feeling much better

Electricgooberella · 25/07/2008 22:43

I spoke too soon.Owww. Again.

imaginaryfriend · 26/07/2008 19:25

Well my gap took a turn for the worst yesterday and started hurting again. This is now 10 days since I had it extracted and I would've hoped to be through the painful stage. But yesterday and today I had gnawing pains in the bone again and the cavity was very sore. it's been on and off today too. I've started the 4-hourly salt water swills again, I'd cut them back a bit at the middle of the week. Anybody know how long you need to swill for?

OP posts:
Electricgooberella · 26/07/2008 19:58

I don't swill with salt water, I use an antibacterial mouthwash after every meal.
Could you have got food in it? I had the smallest bit of ham in my crater today and it was very sore, I got it out.
I'm still taking as much Ibuprofen and paracetamol as you are allowed and it still wakes me up.
I am always the last to finish a meal as I rinse with water after every other mouthfull and chew for ages.

I wonder how long it takes for the hold to heal over ...

imaginaryfriend · 27/07/2008 21:48

hole, not hold.

Someone told me it can take six months! How on earth did they manage years ago?

Electricgooberella · 28/07/2008 12:36

There's us moaning now with our ONE tooth being removed, what about all the old dears who have full sets pulled in one go? One of my neighbours who is my age (35) had all his pulled about 8 years ago due to a gum condition.
God, what if they got dry socket in every one?
This is only mild pain, in comparison.

imaginaryfriend · 28/07/2008 13:59

I'd rather not think about that scenario ...

How you doing today goober?

ripeberry, how is your cavity doing? Are you still doing the swilling with salt water etc.?

I'm, touch wood, the most pain-free so far today.

This is my 1st pain-killer-free day since I had it done. It is sore, but that is all. I'm sure the ammount of ibuprofen I've eaten this last 2 weeks has given me stomach ulcers!
For lunch I had my first bread roll since it was done and a bag of crisps, not melty Quavers either, proper, sharp potato crisps.
I'm liking this.
Fingers crossed that this is the start of things to come.

imaginaryfriend · 28/07/2008 15:19

That's great goober. I hope it continues!

The hole itself looks much tighter, not the gaping hole that it was.
How about everyone elses?

imaginaryfriend · 28/07/2008 22:08

Mine is smaller and tighter too, but there's still quite a deep pit in the middle. Perfect for little morsels of food to lodge themselves in ...

OP posts:
Electricgooberella · 28/07/2008 22:53

Yep, mine is the same. I find that I am scared to swallow with mouth closed, as I am worried that the vaccuam will suck something out and I will be back to square 1 again. Swallowing is a funny ol' do with mouth open.

Ripeberry · 29/07/2008 10:18

Hi all, my hole is still deep but it does seem to be filling up from the bottom up and it is looking like a nice healthy pink and not the horrible grusome colours of last week.
I do still swill out with salt water, but usually last thing at night.
My girls are fascinated with my "gap" and they have vowed to brush their teeth really well so they don't get bad teeth like mummy!

Electricgooberella · 29/07/2008 10:37

Good for your girls! I'm glad we're all getting back to normal now.
I still use my mouthwash after every meal.
Still not a painkiller in sight, thank god.
Last week was the pits and I don't ever want to go through that again.
I think generally being run-down didn't aid the healling. The day before I had it out was my lovely Mum's funeral, so you can imagine my state-of-mind on that morning.

As they say, things can only get better.

imaginaryfriend · 29/07/2008 23:14

I had no idea goober, that your mum had died. Poor you.

Painkiller free zone here too today. I wouldn't want to go through another extraction in a hurry!

Electricgooberella · 30/07/2008 08:40

All good still. Fingers crossed.

imaginaryfriend · 31/07/2008 18:47

Same here. I'm so relived as we go away next Monday.

Morning everyone ,I had a tooth out yesterday morning after having a really bad infection in my jaw for a week, although neat all the swelling has gone down I woke up in just as much pain this morning as I have all week with an infections. I was told by the Dentist that the rest should just drain away from the whole where the tooth came out,is that why I am still In lots of pain or is it normal after extraction and infection combined, I have 1 day left on antibiotics but feel like it's not cleared up ....please help

picklemepopcorn · 23/09/2017 07:51

Give it a day or two! It's quite a big thing, having a big tooth out. If it gets worse rather than better, go back. It should ease off today if you keep up the paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Bena2006 · 23/09/2017 08:21

Thanks I'm hoping it does I am working today so I'm hoping busy mind less pain ,I shall see how it goes .Thanks.
