advice following tooth extraction - I'm in PAIN!

imaginaryfriend · 16/07/2008 22:44

I've had a troublesome tooth since March and after repeated attempts at root canals I had it removed today hoping I'd finally be pain-free. Unfortunately I'm in such agony this evening I'm worried something is wrong as I've had extractions before and not felt anything like this.

I suspect the blood clot may have come off the wound - if that's the case will it not heal? Will it become infected?

Any advice at all about what I should / could do?

Well it's nothing like the pain I had when I had an abcess. Neurofen seems to mostly kick it but paracetamol isn't so effective.

Any news from Ripeberry yet?
Am worried.
Had a shit day, though the tooth is only part to blame for that.

TheMadHouse · 18/07/2008 16:21

I have had dry socket, it was so painfull I couldnt sleep, eat or do much other than bang my head against the wall.

I went back to the dentist got Abs and had the extraction site packed with birds nest stuff and it really eased things. I had to have it packed 3 more times, but now 6 weeks later the hole is nearly closed.

I also ended up with codine and volderol from the doctors as my face was so sore

rebelmum1 · 18/07/2008 16:24

Your hospital might have an emergency dentist call them and go.

Ripeberry · 18/07/2008 16:53

Feeling much better now. The achiness has gone away and i've not needed any painkillers today.
The side of my face still feels a bit numb also the side of my nose (bruised nerve?) but i've managed to eat some petit filou (pinched it from the kids) and had a bowl of ready brek so now have more energy.
I've been doing the salt rinses everytime i've had something to eat but i refuse to look at my gap as it looks horrible..yuck!
Hope everyone is feeling a bit better by tomorrow.

Goober · 18/07/2008 18:18

I refuse to look at mine too, but if I had to describe what it looked like, I'd say chicken giblets. Bleugh!

Goober · 19/07/2008 12:54

Today = Owwww.

Ripeberry · 19/07/2008 21:05

Poor Goober!, mine keeps hurting when i talk and it feels like the clot is being pulled out.
Tried to eat some soggy pasta and tuna today, that was quite nice, but want what DH is having Steak and chips!, not fair that i can't have it [sulk}.

imaginaryfriend · 19/07/2008 21:46

I've been more worried about mine today. The area that was the clot has shrunk to such a small amount that I'm convinced it's going to disappear and I'll end up with a dry socket. It's been more painful today too, in my jaw and in my cheek. And the hole itself is very sore and hot feeling. But still not what I'd call 'excruciating' pain, not like abscess pain, so I'm loathe to go to an emergency dental clinic.

Could either of your force yourselves to look at your socket and tell me what it looks like? Mine is a dent now with a kind of white soft scabby thing in the middle, very red and a bit swollen round the edges.

Ripeberry actually mine is very similar today, hurting when I speak and I feel like I'm sucking the clot out all the time too. If we're lucky that's just part of healing?! Are you finding that any pain relief medicines are helping? Nurofen is by far the best for me so far.

OP posts:
Ripeberry · 19/07/2008 21:53

Yes Nurofen works quite well. Had a peek and it's starting to go yellowy on one edge and that's a sign of healing.
Just keep doing the salt rinses (gag!) gently and we should be all feeling much better by the end of next week!
Just feeling so hungry!
Good time to start a diet!

I've had a tooth extracted this morning . Am taking paracetamol regularly as 18wks pg - when am I going to feel better?

imaginaryfriend · 19/07/2008 22:16

Ripeberry but does it seem like the clot covers a smaller area, or is more indented than it was? Sorry to sound so obsessive. I've read that 3-5 days after extraction is prime time for dry socket to start although I can't seem to fathom if one should have had no clot from the beginning or if it suddenly disappears at day 3-5 ...

kd73, I can't really answer that. I had a tooth out last Wednesday lunchtime and am still in quite a lot of pain although, so far, the first night was the worst.

This morning my cheek is aching and I just feel a kind of dull pressure in my jaw below the tooth. Not sure if this is normal or if I should get myself to the emergency dentist. The pain is not unbearable though, just pressing. Looking at the socket there's still some white stuff with flecks of black in it but it's definitely lower down in the socket than it was.

i was obsessed with my socket healing i was convincd i was going to get a dry socket.

it does look odd whilst it heals, red, black white, yellow lots of weird colours. and it will still hurt, there's lots of bone healing to be done.

Goober · 20/07/2008 11:10

Why does it hurt so much when I wake up?
Tis the jaw that causes so much pain, not the crater itself.
Had a curry last night and was convinced that I was going to get rice stuck in the cavity, took ages to eat with washing out mouth every other mouthfull.
Had my Saturday glass of wine and after 1 sip (that stung) I didn't have any more. Better to stick to water.
Why am I such a baby? I am usually such a toughie, but this has brought out the la-la in me.
KD73: I wish I knew the answer.
Stay with us though, we'll hold your hand.

Goober · 20/07/2008 19:28

Today has been the most painfull yet.
I have been writing down the time I take my tablets so I know, to the minute, when I can have some more. Today though they are not helping.

imaginaryfriend · 20/07/2008 20:39

I phoned around this morning trying to find out if there was an emergency dentist / clinic I could visit but I couldn't get in anywhere so am going to see how tonight goes and maybe head off first thing in the morning to the dental hospital.

SEA I feel like that, convinced I'm going to get dry socket! I just can't tell. Today it was definitely more painful than yesterday which isn't supposed to be how it is, is it? But tonight is less painful than this morning. I think the clot has shrunk so far down in the hole it's become more painful. But maybe that's normal.

When is it actually too late to get dry socket? When can I stop suspecting it?

OP posts:
Goober · 20/07/2008 21:34

I think I will need to see somebody tomorrow too. Tablets aren't helping at all now.

imaginaryfriend · 20/07/2008 23:17

What does your socket look like goober?

VeronicaMars · 20/07/2008 23:30

I had a tooth out a few years ago and was still in agony the following day. Went back to dentist and he said it was fine, I'd go back to put your mind at ease. it does take a few days for the soreness to ease, especially if it was a bigger tooth.
Nurofen and the sprays that numb your throat and really good. just spray it directly on where the tooth was, it eases the pain and at least you might get some sleep.
Hope you feel better.

Goober · 21/07/2008 08:28

It has shrunk now. The actual site is quite hollow, but a brownish colour inside.
I was awake with it at 3am, as that was the time that the Ibuprofen wore off. Took some more, but stayed awake grumbling until 5.
I will try to get an emergency GP appointment today. I don't want to see the dentist, just want a prescription for stronger drugs.

imaginaryfriend · 21/07/2008 10:21

Have you been taking panadol?

OP posts:
Goober · 21/07/2008 13:18

I was taking Paracetamol with Ibuprofen.

Saw GP an hour ago. I do have an infection. Now have AB's and Codeine for the pain along with what I am already taking.

How are you other gappy people?

imaginaryfriend · 21/07/2008 14:52

an infection rather than the dreaded dry socket? did you also have fever?

I'm tentatively better today, definitely better than yesterday at any rate. But still very sore and very sensitive. But the boring gnawing pain I had in my jaw has eased off.
