advice following tooth extraction - I'm in PAIN!

imaginaryfriend · 16/07/2008 22:44

I've had a troublesome tooth since March and after repeated attempts at root canals I had it removed today hoping I'd finally be pain-free. Unfortunately I'm in such agony this evening I'm worried something is wrong as I've had extractions before and not felt anything like this.

I suspect the blood clot may have come off the wound - if that's the case will it not heal? Will it become infected?

Any advice at all about what I should / could do?

An infection.
No fever as such, but gum was hot and fowl taste coming from the crater.
The ABs the GP gave me are the sort that are given to alcoholics to stop them drinking, so, even if I wanted to, I can't have a drink.
Throbbing, gnawing pain continues through all the drugs!
Hmmmph!

southeastastra · 21/07/2008 16:12

wish i'd had those abs goober, will not bore you with my tooth extraction story, but keep an eye on the infection.

imaginaryfriend · 21/07/2008 16:26

Go on, SEA, bore us with your story? Pleeeaaase?

Goober, no sign of dry socket though? I keep asking because if it is there's apparently a treatment the dentist can do instantly which removes the pain.

Goober, so sorry to hear that you're having problems.
At least the ABs will start to sort it out soon and you'll feel better here are some ((((((hugs)))))))) for you

Goober · 21/07/2008 19:51

Oh hell!
Just been looking up symptoms of dry socket and I think I wrote them.
Fowl smell/ taste.
Pain inceasing since day 3.
Hollow looking socket.
I have had Paracetamol, codene, ibuprofen for the pain, all together and thwanging pain continues!
Bugger.
If still at it tomorrow I'll call the dentist.

HereComeTheGirls · 21/07/2008 19:55

the dentist can clean and dress/pack the socket, which will help enormously!

That's the stuff; METRONIZADOLE.
Will the dentist charge me again? The reson I had tooth extracted in the first place was to keep costs down, if I end up paying for another treatment it kind of defeats the object.

Brrrrrrrrr. Too cold.
I have some of that throat spray which I will use if I need to numb it.

HereComeTheGirls · 21/07/2008 20:03

i don't think so, and if they did it wouldn't be very much..

imaginaryfriend · 21/07/2008 21:40

Goober, if it's dry socket then antibiotics are a waste of time for you, that's why I was asking if you felt feverish because if you don't I'd be really surprised if you had an infection rather than dry socket.

Do you have an emergency dental hospital nearby to you? I'm in London and 3 hospitals have them only you have to get there really early in the morning to secure a session with the dentist. But you don't have to pay at all and you'd get instant emergency treatment.

From what I've read about dry socket as soon as they've packed the wound (with an analgesic and antiseptic dressing) the pain is supposed to be instantaneously better.

How is everyone feeling today on this lovely sunny day?

Goober · 22/07/2008 17:09

It is a dry socket.

imaginaryfriend · 22/07/2008 21:58

Oh Goober, I did suspect it might be. Have you had it packed? Is it feeling any better?

How are you doing ripeberry?

I'm definitely much better though I keep feeling surprised by how sore I still am. I had the bugger out a week ago tomorrow

OP posts:
Goober · 22/07/2008 22:45

Dentist cleaned and packed it.
The taste of cloves is making me feel sick.

Ripeberry · 23/07/2008 08:58

Touching wood like mad! I've been fine so far.
The tooth they took out was in my top jaw so maybe it heals better?
But now i've got quite a BIG hole and it's really difficult to stop myself from poking it with my tongue.
Can still only eat on one side of my mouth and at least i've managed to lose almost 2 pounds in weight this last week.
Also not been eating any bread or rice (gets stuck) but potatoes ok'ish and i've noticed that i'm not as bloated as usual, so i may stop eating so much bread in future.
Goober, oil of cloves is disgusting isn't it? but at least it must be helping with the pain.

imaginaryfriend · 23/07/2008 09:22

Goober, I've heard those packs taste revolting. Is it feeling better though? How long will you have to keep the dressing in?

OP posts:
Goober · 23/07/2008 12:58

The paste is supposed to disolve slowly releasing pain relief slowly.
The taste has made me feel sick.
I woke up this morning and the clod of paste stuf was sticking up proud above the gumline. I pushed it back in and then cleaned my teath, avoiding it as I had been. Whilst spitting out after, it came out!
Instant pain again. Instant pig-shit smell and taste.
Bloody hell.
Going back to dentist tomorrow.

imaginaryfriend · 23/07/2008 18:21

Oh Goober, you're really going through it aren't you? Did the horrible paste help when it was in though? How long do you have to have it for?

OP posts:
Goober · 23/07/2008 19:03

The paste didn't help instantly as I'd expected it to, but after 10 mins I realised that I was pain-free for the first time since last Thursday.
This morning was very bad and after lunch I actually cried it was so bad, but since about 4 it hasn't been so bad.
Fingers crossed that it is now healling. You never know.

Goober · 23/07/2008 19:06

The paste isn't removed by the dentist, it disolves and after that it is supposedly ok.

Unless of course you are me!

HereComeTheGirls · 23/07/2008 20:26

It should gradually heal, from the bottom up, and the dentist will keep packing it when the pain returns. Sorry you are going through this, it's hard

imaginaryfriend · 23/07/2008 21:26

So do you have go to and get it packed again? What does the paste taste of? Any idea how much longer you'll be in pain? What sort of pain was it by the way? Like abscess pain?

OP posts:
Goober · 23/07/2008 21:48

What were you like as a child? Did you ask this many questions then?

  1. Going back tomorrow to be restuffed.
  2. Tastes ever so strongly of cloves and Vicks.
  3. Like I said, twas (still is) a thwanging, throbbing, sharp, scraping pain in the bone. It's very disturbing.
  4. Don't know, never had an adscess, so can't compare.
