For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Oh yes, thanks, I see- shall have to try these things out before posting...

lazarou · 27/05/2008 11:34

Yes please, I would love to join you.

The chapter I am currently on is all about protein. According to the Uk National Food guide you should aim to have the following in your diet per day.

Bread/cereals/potatoes-33%
fruit and veg - 33%
meat,fish and alternatives - 12%
milk and dairy - 15%
fatty and sugary foods - 8%

You can calculate what you have by keeping a diary of what you eat in a day, putting the foods into their groups. Count how many of each food group you've had and add them together. Then take the number from the individual food groups and divide it by the total, then times it by 100 to get the percentage. Then you can compare it to the guidelines.

ooh, does that make sense?

SauerKraut · 27/05/2008 11:35

It's funny you should say that about breakfast, MrsC, I was thinking the same about running

MrsCarrot · 27/05/2008 11:37

what about running, sauerkraut? That you are thinner if you don't?

That's right. Plus, I had a bowl of rice krispies afterwards which cancels out the badness of pringles.

lazarou · 27/05/2008 11:43

Thank you. What are you studying at the moment?

TooTicky · 27/05/2008 11:52

Ha ha Franny, you thought I was joking about the chart!

SauerKraut · 27/05/2008 11:54

Well, I was, MrsC, yes! But you never know, it might just be lots of muscles I didn't realise existed building up. [hopeful]

TooTicky · 27/05/2008 11:56

Hello SK how are things? Are you surrounded by rare mountain flowers?

FrannyandZooey · 27/05/2008 11:59

oh exercising definitely makes your heavier (muscle)
it's quite noticeable IMO

Hello, TT, I'm fine! Hope things are improving for you. Funnily enough, I was on Sunday- I went for a hike on my own while the others were at church and most of it was through a nature reserve and an organic farm with hedgerows and things! It was lovely, although steep and hard work.

lazarou · 27/05/2008 12:00

Franny, I can start eating healthily tommorrow as I have finally ordered a big shop with lots of fruit and veg. That is, if I get a look in, the kids usually raid the fridge of all the fruit. May have to invest in a fridge lock.

SauerKraut · 27/05/2008 12:01

Oh jolly good. I thought I might have been eating too much as exercise always seems to make me crave even more food than usual.

FrannyandZooey · 27/05/2008 12:03

SK if you are really bothered, try measuring instead of weighing
places like your biceps and so on should get larger (or whatever parts you are working on) while places where you store fat should get smaller

lazarou that sounds great
just soak up the healthy vibe in the meantime

Am hovering at work for news from UR. I hope she has friends / family supporting her atm.

Hello to long lost veggers, where / how have you all been?

Fruit salad.

FrayedKnot · 27/05/2008 12:24

Aha

"Places where you store fat should get smaller"

This is why my bingo wings used to wobble, whereas now they flap.

Luuurvely.

I advocate a nice big healthy brekkie for weight loss.

No breakfast leads to coffee and all sorts of things.

lackaDAISYcal · 27/05/2008 12:29

yay, the witticisms are back . I love these titles.

I'm a regular lurker and trying to do 10/10, but failing miserably on the fruit and veg. Have managed the exercise for the last few weeks and can usually get five fruit/veg in.

TigerFeet · 27/05/2008 12:30

Oh my I have just caught up on the old thread.

I am so angry and sad for UR - how could one human being do that to another? It seems so inhuman. And her poor ds caught in the middle. I'm sure he wants/needs his Mum. Words fail me TBH.

Toot what a saga - glad you got sorted in the end and that ds2 is OK

Mice... eeewwwww. Mouse poo double eeewwww. FWIW I think a 60°C wash will kill most known germs dead. I used to be a microbiologist y'know [germ oracle]. I don't think one 60°C wash will hurt most things, ime stuff falls apart if one continues to overwash at high temps. I do most of my washing at 40° and we are not yet dead.

TooTicky · 27/05/2008 12:46

Tigerfeet - sorry about all the sickness, sounds like what we had.
Actually, I came off very lightly considering. I think my body realised there just wasn't TIME to succomb fully.

SK - your hike sounds wonderful - wish I could have come with you

Franny, 'tis all research for my forthcoming book, "The Knobbly Poo and Other Stories".

fullmoonfiend · 27/05/2008 12:57

I don't think it counts as an argument unless we actually argued franny....

What happened seemed to be, I said my nutitionist therpay guru told me I didn't eat enough prtein. You ranted on about how you hate it hwen people said we needed more protein. And that protein was the devil's bollocks or something. I nodded quietly to myself and changed the subject gently diverted your attention by waving mangoes in front of you

Having said that, I find that now i am including some protein with each meal, I am far less hungry between meals and therefore far less likely to fill up on malteasers. So ner....

UnderRated · 27/05/2008 14:12

I have fallen off the wagon - no significant F&V intake & no exercise for ages.

Off to face the music now. I would be grateful if I could come back and read some poo talk or something equally comforting.

Hope everyone has a good day. (Should that be everybody? What's the difference?)

SauerKraut · 27/05/2008 15:13

Will be thinking of you, UR. And sitting on hankies and keeping fingers tightly crossed.
Not very good at poo talk, but I can sing "Pee Po Belly Bum Drawers" by Flanders and Swann in a comforting manner for you if you like.
