Anyone else got this virus, and what is it?

DH been poorly off and on for about 2 weeks. Temperatures, body aches, chesty coughing fits but not bringing stuff up, stuffy nose, very tired. He’ll perk up for a day or so and then dip again. GP says chest clear. Wondering if it’s flu. He did have flu jab in October though. Any ideas?

I’ve had similar and had the flu jab too, so wasn’t impressed. The tiredness was awful and I’m still not fully back on my feet after three weeks!

Nenanena · 25/01/2025 12:35

Sorry to hear you’ve had it too. When did the shivers/hot spells stop? Do you feel you’re in the post-viral phase even though you’re still not back to full energy?

Sounds like influenza A that's been going around, despite having the flu jab. You can get flu tests off amazon, they are like the covid tests, if you want confirmation.

SereneCapybara · 25/01/2025 13:32

Did he have the razor sore throat with it? It's flu. I've had it twice this year. It's a really vicious strain. Tell him to take it very very easy once he is better, or he risks getting post-viral-fatigue. He needs to rest for at least a week after thinking he's back to normal - less exercise, less heavy lifting, no overtime at work if possible. Loads of fluids, chicken soup with barley, loads of veg, ginger, chilli, garlic.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/01/2025 15:05

Flu. But does it really matter? I was bedridden for three weeks from 23rd December for three weeks. I was out for three weeks. I've only just got back to relative normal, the fatigue was awful. Also ended up with pneumonia and it took two lots of antibiotics to sort that.

DuckBee · 25/01/2025 15:12

It’s a virus that’s going around here. 5 weeks in and still exhausted and appetite all
over the place. Body was still aching at the beginning of week 4 but not as bad by any means as it was at the beginning.

Pilgrimgirl · 25/01/2025 15:14

Has anyone had nausea and diarrhoea with this. I've had both along with chills etc I've had it for over a week now and getting a bit worried!

Still got hot spells 3 weeks on 😟. It’s hard to tell how ill I am, as had quite big surgery just before Christmas and so can’t tell what is illness and what post surgery recovery. It took me a while to realise that I was ill as felt bleurgh anyway 🤣

LeaveALittleNote · 25/01/2025 16:11

I’ve had it and I had the flu jab. Seems the flu jab didn’t protect against this thing. It’s very lingering… I’ve been ill for weeks with it. It turned into a chest infection which I needed antibiotics for. I’ve been left exhausted. It’s brutal.

gamerchick · 25/01/2025 16:14

Didn't they miss the mark with the flu jab this winter? It happen. So it's rampaging about.

DreamW3aver · 25/01/2025 16:26

Pretty much everyone I know has had some kind of virus this winter, you're really lucky not to know about it

Like a pp I don't see it matters what exact virus it is, unfortunately you have to let it run it's course and that could be weeks

soontobeamama · 25/01/2025 16:41

It's been doing the rounds here too - friends of ours have been very ill since New Year with it and are only now feeling ready to go back to work on Monday.

The flu jab will not stop you catching the flu. It will only help against one strain.

This virus is particularly nasty and I've heard people say it is worse than when they had Covid - it isn't Covid, but a similar viral illness.

Choccymumma · 25/01/2025 19:19

I think this is me.
Started 8 days ago. Fatigue, hot and aches and pains initially. For the last 5 days a headache that feels like sinuses and terrible nausea. Felt well yesterday and daftly thought I was on the mend hut today, oh man I feel rough again.
Work part time in a school and had time off this week but can't see me managing this week like this. Barely get off the sofa.
No real cold symptoms, a bit sniffly and congestion.
Hugs to everyone, it's grim.

Sparrow11 · 25/01/2025 21:45

Yes, I've started ŵith something the last few days. I had my flu jab but only last week so I think it wouldn't be effective yet. But not sure if flu anyway started with a really sore throat and ear ache, which developed into migraine headaches which I've had for three days. Struggling to sleep, lack of appetite, no energy and last night started with body aches so bad in my ribs back and even breasts hurt. Bit of a dry cough. But no congestion, snotty nose or anything. Worst part is definitely body aches which seem to beworse when I lay down

baroqueandblue · 25/01/2025 21:50

I've been poorly off and on for the last couple of months. Finally thought I was getting over it but this last week or so the fatigue has been a killer and my chest is getting tighter and tighter. Not much of a cough and only occasionally blowing my nose, but phlegmy regardless, and my back aches. Feel quite anxious in the last couple of days because of my breathing being off and just a sort of doomy "I'm never going to get better" feeling. I probably should've tried to see a GP before now but contacting them these days is a bit life-sapping. Think I will have to bite the bullet on Monday though because my chest is worrying me now.

Sorry to hear you've all been, or are still, suffering. It has been a really twatty season for viruses and the like.

lavendarwillow · 25/01/2025 21:54

Yes and unusually, we've had it first and passed down to the children. Usually they pass their germs to us. Husband had it first and it's still lingering, he's been the worst affected. Deep cough, aches and fever. It started as a mild headache for me, then chills, muscle aches and sore throat. Have in fact lost my voice now. Both children have presented with high temperatures and headaches.

Porridgeislife · 25/01/2025 21:58

I’ve had influenza A this week (confirmed using a rapid test) and it’s been far worse than the 2 occasions I’ve COVID. I’ve slept almost non stop for 7 days. Today was the first time I’ve left the house since the 17th.

Nenanena · 25/01/2025 23:24

Blimey, all sounds familiar. I guess I’m just curious… wondered whether it’s the latest way COVID is presenting or whether it could be some form of flu. I wish you all well!

WTF2025 · 25/01/2025 23:36

Something extremely nasty has rattled through everyone in the house here since last Sunday when youngest got sick.
All been basically in bed or with quilts on the sofa the entire week. And we never get sick.
Body aches, fever, chills, nausea (youngest had vomiting for one day) no appetite, cough, killer sore throat and total exhaustion, it’s evil!

I bet give it a another month and you will glad you still have the chocolate. Takes a few weeks from feeling better to start putting on lost weight. You might need the extra calories then. It's hard as you don't feel right for ages and being ravenous just goes after not eating for this long. I can remember having flu, loosing a stone and looking forward to being hungry again, but instead I was very meh about food for months. Especially after covid. I only ate to survive for 9 months.

This is exactly my symptoms. They are so vague! The fatigue is the absolute worst bit.

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 26/01/2025 17:02

I think DH and I have this. Started over a week ago with sore throats, then nasty coughs and now have temperature, aching, exhausted and still the cough which is really painful. Would love to know when we’ll be better! Going to contact GP tomorrow, really because we have self certified for 7 days and now need sick notes but also in case it’s a chest infection.

strugglingwithlife · 27/01/2025 10:05

I have this. Started feeling ill on Thursday. Haven't had any sleep for 3 nights. Feel so ill I can barely stand. I have never felt so awful.
