Not rinsing after brushing

I read a top tip from dentists is to not rinse your mouth after brushing, but I can never bring myself to do it. Does anyone do this? Just spit out the toothpaste and that’s it?

i tried but i always forget 😅🤣

Lolloped · 31/10/2024 10:39

I spit and never rinse. Toothpaste is good for your teeth so you don’t want to wash it away.

Chemenger · 31/10/2024 10:40

I haven’t rinsed since I shared a student flat with a dental student. That’s what they were advised. A more important bit of advice was “never flick through a dentistry textbook” some horrific pictures.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 31/10/2024 10:42

I used to rinse but had to train myself out of it after the dentist told me not to, took a little while to get used to

BigDahliaFan · 31/10/2024 10:44

Yes, I got told this by the hygeniest, or if I do feel the need to rinse use mouthwash (but she said that like it was a bad idea). But it just doesn't feel right. there was a R4 programme on recently I must try and find.

DancingNotDrowning · 31/10/2024 10:44

Never rinse and also use mouthwash first not after.

my dentist was very clear about that

KoalaCalledKevin · 31/10/2024 10:45

Yep I've never rinsed.

OliviaRodrighost · 31/10/2024 10:48

I don’t rinse, don’t know why you would!

I brush as soon as I get up in the morning.

I use mouthwash after breakfast (and lunch if at home).

I floss after my evening meal and then use mouth wash to rinse.

Brush teeth before bed.

This. My dentist tells me not to.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 31/10/2024 10:51

I also spit and never rinse. Was taught to rinse as a kid but followed my dentists advise the last 20 years or so and just spit.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 31/10/2024 10:51

*advice

I don't rinse and don't find it a problem except this week when we went away for a few days and forgot the toothpaste. Grabbed a tube from a shop and it's a whitening one which leaves weird scum in my mouth for me to find when I wake up.

DoctorAngelface · 31/10/2024 10:52

I can't stand toothpaste so I spit and rinse. It burns my mouth so I couldn't leave it. If I don't rinse with hot water straight away it's unbearable.

smallchange · 31/10/2024 10:53

I don't rinse. You get used to it.

maryberryslayers · 31/10/2024 10:53

Yes I stopped rinsing years ago, it's what the dentist tells you to do. I floss, mouthwash then brush.

I use a handful of water to rinse the toothpaste from the outside of my lips and this seems to satisfy my rinsing urge!

It's really important for children too and good to get them into the habit from the start.

coffeesaveslives · 31/10/2024 10:53

I've never rinsed!

Sunflowersinthewind · 31/10/2024 10:55

I have never rinsed. It never occurred to me to rinse!

FruitFlyPie · 31/10/2024 10:55

No way, sorry, I'd rather have a mouth full of fillings* than not rinse.

*I don't have this

Nikitaspearlearring · 31/10/2024 10:57

I was told that too, so that the toothpaste stays in contact with the teeth and strengthens the enamel.
But - I have an underactive thyroid and I've read some studies that say to avoid fluoride. There is a Canadian study on pregnant women (who are more susceptible to hormone problems anyway) and 60 per cent of them developed hypothyroid symptoms after using fluoride toothpaste and not rinsing. (Google thyroid and fluoride study Canada and you'll find it).
The problem is that they study the teeth and find fluoride is good, but maybe don't study its effect on the rest of the body.
So I do use fluoride toothpaste but I rinse!

CanalBoots · 31/10/2024 11:00

I didn't like the feeling of not rinsing as it felt like all the bits I'd just brushed off my teeth were still in my mouth. So, knowing how you're not meant to rinse, now I clean my teeth, rinse and then just for a moment brush again with a rinsed brush and a little bit of toothpaste.

Flossflower · 31/10/2024 11:01

Yes, I know this. I use a water flosser and then brush. Using the water flosser means my mouth is very well rinsed before I brush my teeth.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/10/2024 11:02

I rinse and I will never stop it. I was told at an early age not to swallow toothpaste, and I live by that.

Yes that’s it exactly, urgh. But that’s a good idea you’ve come up with.

Brushing your teeth doesn’t need water at all, unless you’ve got a water flosser, but always use that before brushing. Otherwise just put toothpaste on the dry brush, use without water and then don’t rinse.

I rinse in the mornings because I always have breakfast as soon as I've brushed teeth. Toothpaste flavoured tea and toast isn't pleasant.
I don't rinse after cleaning teeth before I go to bed though.
