Not rinsing after brushing

I read a top tip from dentists is to not rinse your mouth after brushing, but I can never bring myself to do it. Does anyone do this? Just spit out the toothpaste and that’s it?

Yeah as kids in the 80s we all had a “tooth mug” in the bathroom and were encouraged to take a slug of water from it, rinse around the mouth and spit.

I read years ago that this was just rinsing away the toothpaste and stopped doing it in my 20s, about same time I first got an electric toothbrush, I find spitting is absolutely fine to get rid of the bits.

Had to teach my mother in law about “the new way” when DS first started to stay with her and she got the tooth mug out.

I rinse in the mornings because I always have breakfast as soon as I've brushed teeth. Toothpaste flavoured tea and toast isn't pleasant.
I don't rinse after cleaning teeth before I go to bed though.

So why not just eat before brushing? Since that is literally the point of brushing, to get rid of all the food.

I didn't like the feeling of not rinsing as it felt like all the bits I'd just brushed off my teeth were still in my mouth. So, knowing how you're not meant to rinse, now I clean my teeth, rinse and then just for a moment brush again with a rinsed brush and a little bit of toothpaste.

Yes, this is what I do. Rinsing does rinse out little bits of food etc so I don’t want to leave them in there, but I do a quick brush over again.

HelloCheekyCat · 31/10/2024 11:32

I don't rinse but wait min 20 mins and then swill with mouthwash which gets rid of any bits of food left behind

HelloCheekyCat · 31/10/2024 11:33

@MasterShardlake brushing your teeth and eating too close together is really bad for your teeth, something to do with acid and enamel so you should definitely wait a bit in between plus it can't be pleasant eating/drinking with a mint taste in your mouth

Dentist advised to brush before breakfast because bacteria builds up on the teeth overnight, OK to eat straight away if you don't mind everything tasting minty.
It's brushing straight AFTER breakfast that can damage tooth enamel.

You should brush your teeth before breakfast, not after – this is why

There are two reasons why you shouldn’t brush your teeth straight after eating breakfast, apparently

I don't rinse either. I use high fluoride toothpaste (prescription), so I need to keep it on my teeth so it can do its job.

I can't stand toothpaste so I spit and rinse. It burns my mouth so I couldn't leave it. If I don't rinse with hot water straight away it's unbearable.

It might be worth trying to buy a toothpaste without SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate) in it. This is what usually causes the burning sensation in some people.

Jk987 · 31/10/2024 11:50

I thought the opposite was true due to the risk of swallowing too much fluoride from the toothpaste. I thought that fluoride shouldn't be injested?

LimeLime · 31/10/2024 11:51

I just have to rinse, I cannot bear the minty taste and when I spit out the toothpaste I hate the bits that stick around on the teeth and the sort of mucousy feel of the residue. I've compromised by only doing one rinse instead of making sure every trace of toothpaste is gone.

CautiousLurker1 · 31/10/2024 11:53

Hygienist told me and the kids this too. Hate the feel of it in my mouth so tend to forget as well…

MasterShardlake · 31/10/2024 11:44

The point of brushing is to prevent plaque build up on the teeth

And plaque builds up where bits of food are stuck…(not disabling my ad blocker to read your article, sorry)

eurochick · 31/10/2024 12:01

I hate the feeling of it so I have managed to perfect a technique where I rinse a tiny bit so I was the toothpaste off my tongue and the centre of my mouth without sloshing it around my teeth. I'm sure not rinsing at all would be better but I'm happy with this compromise.

KnittedCardi · 31/10/2024 12:03

Have never rinsed, or used mouthwash or flossed for that matter, or been to a hygienist. Have perfect teeth and gums 😁

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 31/10/2024 12:10

Haven't rinsed since my dentist told me not to, maybe a decade ago. It really did help improve the health of my teeth.

I rinse with mouthwash before brushing if I feel I need a minty boost!

One thing I've seen is if you don't think flossing is worth the effort - try it just once (before brushing) and smell the floss. It is truly nasty. And, keep floss by your desk or wherever you tend to have a couple of minutes of idle time rather than trying to do it when you brush.

Use a waterpik or interdental brushes as well, or to get you up to using floss, floss is better but the above are better than nothing.

That’s ok you can always google for more info if you’re interested

Heelworkhero · 31/10/2024 12:14

It’s strange at first, but you quickly get used to it.

Funkyslippers · 31/10/2024 12:58

Yep never rinse, just spit & wipe away any toothpaste around my mouth with water. I always brushed before breakfast but now have aligners so have to brush, floss, mouthwash etc after breakfast to get rid of any traces of food

LadyGabriella · 31/10/2024 12:59

I can’t do this either.

Moier · 31/10/2024 13:00

I don't rinse.. you rinse all the good of the toothpaste away .
I used to until my dentist told me the same .. this was like 40 years ago.

buffyspikefaith · 31/10/2024 13:01

I never rinse
It's like applying body lotion and washing it off after otherwise

Because eating softens the enamel for a little while. You're supposed to wait about half an hour before brushing after eating.

Ew, I hope you mean your private home office desk, I do not need to see my colleagues flossing at work thanks.

I never said brush straight after breakfast? I just said don’t brush before breakfast.
