Not rinsing after brushing

I read a top tip from dentists is to not rinse your mouth after brushing, but I can never bring myself to do it. Does anyone do this? Just spit out the toothpaste and that’s it?

I can't not rinse, it's gross. If I'm being thorough I do brush, rinse, then apply another light layer of paste with a brush or finger and leave that. Best of both worlds! Especially if you use a sensodyn, it needs to stay on your teeth to work

I never said brush straight after breakfast? I just said don’t brush before breakfast.

Not everyone has the luxury of waiting half an hour after breakfast to brush their teeth. Unless they get up at the crack of twat.

I'm not arsed what people do. If you want to risk it then meh.

marshmallowfinder · 31/10/2024 13:13

Sounds absolutely gross. You've just removed plaque and now it's all swimming about in your mouth. Rinse ffs and then apply a clean bit of toothpaste if you must leave it in.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/10/2024 13:22

Never rinse.

WaltzingWaters · 31/10/2024 13:24

Yep read that a while back. Mouthwash first. Clean teeth. Don’t rinse. You get used to it and based on my more recent dental check ups it’s working.

OtherS · 31/10/2024 13:38

Think I used to rinse but don't now. Easier not to with an electric toothbrush anyway I think. I mouthwash first, then brush, then scrape tongue. I also brush first thing rather than after breakfast and use fluoride mouthwash after eating, then floss every night. I needed a lot of work done once and am pretty fastidious about my teeth now!

You spit it out, don't just leave it swilling round
I use a high fluoride prescription paste and want as much of it on my teeth as possible, there's no need at all to rinse

Have never rinsed, or used mouthwash or flossed for that matter, or been to a hygienist. Have perfect teeth and gums 😁

Unless you’ve got relatively large gaps between your teeth, I doubt that’s true. Using floss or interdental brushes would probably
demonstrate that, when they bled.

Tight gaps actually. No, good diet, good genes, brush twice a day with a sonic, and perhaps because I don't rinse!! Just been to the dentist, given excellent review. See you in two years.

kitsuneghost · 31/10/2024 14:03

Yes. I have been told this too
I never rinse

Normallynumb · 31/10/2024 14:05

I was also told not to rinse.
If it helps, I dampen my brush and immediately turn the tap off
I use Corsodyl toothpaste which isn't minty so I can taste my coffee afterwards!

Ew, I hope you mean your private home office desk, I do not need to see my colleagues flossing at work thanks.

Of course I do Hmm. Do you not think my boss would have something to say if I was flossing my teeth in the office?!

I didn't like the feeling of not rinsing as it felt like all the bits I'd just brushed off my teeth were still in my mouth. So, knowing how you're not meant to rinse, now I clean my teeth, rinse and then just for a moment brush again with a rinsed brush and a little bit of toothpaste.

I try to do this!

mathanxiety · 31/10/2024 16:31

No rinsing here, on the advice of a dentist.

I used to up to about five years ago.

Dontcallmescarface · 31/10/2024 17:04

I don't and never have.

This seems to have become the advice.

I brush my teeth as normal, rinse as normal because it gets rid of all the bits of food. Then I put a small blob of toothpaste onto my brush and that's when I spit out but don't rinse. I only do it once a day not every time,

ETA @Poffy snap! Sorry I only just saw your post.

That's what I do. I have to use Colgate Sensitive and it leaves more on my teeth. I've done it for years.

skippy67 · 31/10/2024 17:09

I rinse with mouthwash or water before brushing. Never rinse after

I can't stand toothpaste so I spit and rinse. It burns my mouth so I couldn't leave it. If I don't rinse with hot water straight away it's unbearable.

Have you tried SLS free toothpaste? I switched to a Corsydol (sp?) one and it made a difference and seemed to have reduced the mouth ulcers I've been plagued with since hitting my 40's 🙄

There is a need to remove the plaque you've just brushed off. Spitting won't do that.

ZuckketyZuckZuck · 31/10/2024 17:41

Are there some opposing factors to consider? Toothpaste might be great for teeth, but I think it generally contains emulsifiers which aren't great for the gut.

toothpaste with SLS in it makes my mouth burn too, so I switched to an SLS free brand that still has flouride.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 31/10/2024 17:43

Nikitaspearlearring · 31/10/2024 10:57

I was told that too, so that the toothpaste stays in contact with the teeth and strengthens the enamel.
But - I have an underactive thyroid and I've read some studies that say to avoid fluoride. There is a Canadian study on pregnant women (who are more susceptible to hormone problems anyway) and 60 per cent of them developed hypothyroid symptoms after using fluoride toothpaste and not rinsing. (Google thyroid and fluoride study Canada and you'll find it).
The problem is that they study the teeth and find fluoride is good, but maybe don't study its effect on the rest of the body.
So I do use fluoride toothpaste but I rinse!

Edited

They add flouride to their drinking water in Canada so we don’t need to worry about too much flouride from a bit of toothpaste in the U.K.

Well I'm going to continue following the advice of my dentist rather than an internet random. My teeth health has improved a lot since I started doing this.
