For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

3 next month. ds2 is 7 months and ill too

UnderRated · 19/04/2008 20:46

Berolina. Unwell children is not nice. Hope they feel better soon. It's so hard when you feel that you can't do much to make them better.

I am going to meet my allotment tomorrow. It gets NO sunlight. Will it be impossible to grow tomatoes? What can I grow on a plot full of glass and bricks and probably very high lead levels like most of the city allotments but I won't think about that. Can lead in veg be worse than pesticides? Oh no, now I am worrying.

fishie · 19/04/2008 20:57

hello again f&v pals. i have had a fruit smoothie thingy made by dh (he makes about a litre every day) some more lettuce and jambalaya with onion pepper and tomatoes. 30min run.

f&z my friend's mw said no cycling after 7m because of pelvis. but that might be utter rubbish.

ur, your allotment. i have a weeny very shady garden and grow tomatoes in the tiny area of sun, do think they need it. may be possible to grow squashes and similar in shade. potatoes, carrots, onions and garlic. i think lead is overrated as a poison in everyday life, there are plenty worse.

UnderRated · 19/04/2008 21:36

Thanks fishie - I am sure the allotment will be ok. I'm a bit disappointed that I haven't got the one in the really sunny place but this one is better than none. Squashes could be good too - I don't usually like them but might if they were home grown. You've had a very 10/10 day

I need (yet more) help:

Does anyone have a recipe for spinach and ricotta lasagne?

And please save me from my tofu. How do I get it to taste of something nice? Marinating it in ginger and soysauce didn't help. Am I doing it all wrong?

TooTicky · 19/04/2008 21:59

What is the matter with your tofu? I love tofu but some types can have a strongish taste.
Top tips:
cube it, drizzle with tamari and fry on a high heat until crispy and golden brown
OR
mash with a little tamari (or salt), pepper, turmeric (mainly for colour) and fry - scrambled tofu hurrah!

lullabyloo · 19/04/2008 22:15

I only like basil tofu

FrayedKnot · 19/04/2008 22:17

UR I don;t do proper recipes, however, if I were to be making spinach and ricotta lasagne, I would first make a basic tomato sauce, and then I would mix the ricotta with some cooked spinach, seasoning and a grating of nutmeg.

I would then layer the tomato sauce and the spinach / ricotta mixture alternately with teh lasagne, finsihing with tomato on top, and a generous sprinkling of parmesan over.

Then I would cook it until it was done

Franny I simply cannot imagine cycling and pregnancy. I didn;t take my bike out of the shed from pre-conception to ..um, last year That's over 3 years

UnderRated · 19/04/2008 23:15

The problem with the tofu is that it is tofu. I'm not good with it, I'm afraid. I'll persist though. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Thanks for the suggestions Do you buy the basil tofu, Lully, or make it basilly (sp?) yourself?

FK, that's what I was thinking too so will do it your way. All the recipes I found when I googled contained 1 pound of mozzarella and parmesan which seemed rather excessive.

Been running in gym again. And did weights but had to make a hasty exit when the man next to me started uttering almost incomprehensibly "...underrated...jesus in your life... pray for you...jesus loves you, underrated") so I puffed and panted and "Uh Huh"ed in then did a runner. And pulled a muscle in my leg. Ouch.

FrayedKnot · 20/04/2008 09:25

Oh dear, hope I don;t meet anyone like that in the gym today, UR!

Morning everyone

MrsCarrot · 20/04/2008 09:28

Hello to new people

I only like marinated tofu in those shrink wrapped packs with sesame seeds or whatever, fried till the slices are crispy and then more tamari on top.

Mango, pineapple, pear, raspberries, grapes, pomegranate, banana and passion fruit salad with oats and yoghurt.

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2008 10:13

Morning veggers new and old not new
I have slept for 12 hours
yesterday was not a very 10 / 10 day as after a good breakfast and work I went to the supermarket, then the sofa, ate industrial quantities of macaroni cheese, then lemon sponge with lemon curd sauce, then fell asleep for a long long time

I haven't had any food yet - I want what MrsC had

ds and dp much improved by a good night's sleep (and probably my long absence). Ds just came and gace me a big squirmy naked cuddle and said "I just can't tear myself away as you are so nice"

I marinate tofu in sesame oil, soya sauce, mustard, paprika, lemon juice and brown sugar, then grill or fry until slightly crispy on outside and still soft in the middle
yum I want some now

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2008 10:14

I really really REALLY want what MrsC had
I may lick the screen

What's all this slobbery stuff all over the writing?

TooTicky · 20/04/2008 10:17

Franny, I read your post as: I went to the supermarket then ate the sofa

Fullmoonfiend · 20/04/2008 10:23

I want one of you to come and cook me some tofu - it sound delicious but I have only tried it twice and both times was underwhelmed..

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2008 10:28

the macaroni and lemon sponge were fairly sofa-ish in both quantity and consistency
I will get chucked out if I have many more days of eating like that though; I don't think I even saw a vegetable yesterday

OP posts:
TooTicky · 20/04/2008 10:31

I will fmf

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2008 11:39

pear, raisins, 2 colours of grapes, pineapple
I would have had more but I couldn't fit it in the bowl (I have extra large breakfast bowls so that was not the problem)

OP posts:
Fullmoonfiend · 20/04/2008 11:47

I will have to make sure I get my 10 at sunday dinner as I am not hungry today (having overdosed on crisps and dips last night at a party

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2008 11:48

do you think it would be daft to cancel my physio appointment tomorrow? when i last went a fortnight ago my back was MUCH WORSE for about a week - nothing they did, I don't think, but waiting for the bus / sitting on bus / sitting in waiting room / sitting in physio appointment / waiting for bus / sitting on bus a BAD combination I think
all they did was give some advice and tape my shoulders back, both of which were useful, but didn't cure it, and I think I have got it back under control now (basically I need to do plenty of exercise and not sit about in chairs / travel in cars and buses etc)

so it doesn't seem to me there is much to gain from going again tomorrow - they don't manipulate my back, just ask about it, and use tape (which I am sure improved my posture but did not improve my back)

dp thinks I should maybe go anyway in case it gets bad again?

berolina · 20/04/2008 11:49

Morning all. Franny at your day. And you're never 29 weeks

No F&V yet here today either, unless you count the apple juice at breakfast and the sesame seeds on my breakfast rolls.

Fullmoonfiend · 20/04/2008 11:51

Is it relatively easy to get an appointment when you want one? TBH I'd be inclined to skip it but you need to take good care of yourself in your activities, my lovely. Don't go lifting ds. Could you find an antenatal yoga class to keep things gently supple? Or try some gentle stretching at home?
(The cat is very good for pg and lying on your back with your legs up a wall is very nice for a bad pg back)

berolina · 20/04/2008 11:52

I reckon I'd leave it and just do whatever exercises seem beneficial at home.

Many sympathies. I have a back which should be giving me hell by now (scoliosis, non-level pelvis etc.) , but is amazingly fine - every now and then I get twinges which make me realise I'm living on borrowed time and must go to physio. And then I forget.

FrannyandZooey · 20/04/2008 11:56

I think now that I have been, that I am on their system and can self refer when I need to
appointments seem to take about 1 - 2 weeks which is ok
Thanks FMF, I have really enjoyed doing the cat and also using a swiss ball - does anyone know if you can hire these or something as don't want to buy one? but didn't know about the legs up thing (think that is how I got in this mess in the first place )

I'm only lifting stuff at work and it is not too heavy - just awkward sometimes as I don't know whether to hold above bump or below IYSWIM

Fullmoonfiend · 20/04/2008 12:06

LOL at legs up...I do remember the first time we had sex after being given 'permission' to try for a baby, DH caught me post-coital with my legs up in the air to give the little swimmers boost, as it were... Ahem, it worked!

Some NCTs hire out things like those birthing balls, is that a swiss ball?
