My nausea is so horrifically awful, every single day I wake up retching, I have actually vomited a few times but for the past week it has just been severe nausea. I can't do anything! I'm plagued by it. It is so much worse when I wake up and when I go sleep I'm literally gagging. H pylori has just come back negative so doc will refer me to gastro (so they said) but still waiting for that call booked for next week. I can't hack spicy food anymore and I'm wondering if I have gastroperiasis or severe gastritis. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? It's ruining everything it's so miserable

I have bad health anxiety that I'm getting therapy for but I've never heard of nausea being an anxiety symptom

Nausea is about the most common anxiety symptom there is! Who told you it isn't something that happens?

Have you tried anti nausea medication? You can buy it in a pharmacy.

Is it really?! Idk, when I've googled I've struggled to find anything about it. I'm also in a HA group and not a lot of people post about nausea tbh unless they have emetophobia. I did go to the pharmacy and they said they only had travel sickness tablets, not sure if that would work?

Yes, any travel sickness medicine will treat nausea with any cause.

Buccastem is one you put between your gum and your lip and let it soak in that way. It's not just for travel sickness - I had it prescribed for migraine related sickness for decades. Stemetil is the same medication but in tablet form to swallow.

People may talk about feeling sick rather than nauseous. Or not wanting to eat.

If you're worse when lying down, look at a few things - stomach acid goes into overdrive with anxiety and it could be that which is burning your throat and stomach, making you nauseous first thing.

Ask about omeprazole (can be bought in pharmacy too) to manage this for a few days and see if it helps. GP may prescribe it for you. See also Gaviscon (liquid is far better than the tablets) before you sleep, prop up your head end of the bed (extra pillow or folded blanket underneath the mattress is usually the easiest way) to reduce the acid flowing upwards, and think about having a biscuit or similar just before you go to sleep and when you wake up (like they advise dor pregnancy nausea :

Are you on any hormonal medication (pill/HRT)? Only I woke up feeling nauseous/hungover for want of a better word every day until I stopped taking oral progesterone. Switched to a Mirena coil and it stopped overnight.

Thank you! I do all of these things but yes definitely worse in mornings and when I go sleep. I think I will decline omeprazole as I had it last year, it didn't do anything at all, only thing I've found helps is gaviscon liquid

Thank you. I also have flares of pain. Weirdly enough the only thing that actually helps is ibuprofen but it doesn't help in long run I don't think. I've tried not to take it for a while due to my vomiting and nausea and stomach issues that I get on and off but I think I currently have bad sciatica and the ibuprofen has helped that, but now I feel utterly disgusting like I'm going to vomit everywhere and like I've ate a 3 course meal 😭😭😭 can't win! And I know il be sick soon...I get this full feeling right at the top of my throat and usually that's how I know it isn't going to just be nausea 😞🥱 so tired of it

I'm not on any hormonal medicines. I'm 28, I'm sick of this tho (no pun intended) I've been like this for months now. I've took ibuprofen to control the sciatic pain I am having and I now feel like I am going to vomit everywhere. My stomach feels so incredibly full it feels disgusting 😭😭😭😭😭 I just want a fast referral the not knowing really does affect my anxiety

I had nausea for a few weeks after I had covid and travel sickness tablets helped me loads. Hope you're feeling better soon, nausea is awful

I wonder if ibuprofen could have caused my issues, I remember I took it for about two weeks straight everyday because of stomach pain, it was the only thing that eased it. Though I do remember getting the stomach pains before it. Took it this evening for sciatica and my goodness wish I never touched it. I'm plagued with the worst sickness and reflux

Thank you, I am going to try the tablets, going through a horrible flare of some kind, reflux is horrific atm and I think it's because I took ibuprofen, honestly feel horrendous I'm retching so badly and I'm worried to take an anti acid due to the mixed comments on google about it, I don't want to make myself worse than I am

Nothing has worked so far...I'm due on my period and I think that intensifies my symptoms. I vomited last night and had the 'on a boat sicky feeling' for hours, woke up on and now again I feel like I'm going to be sick, I've tried the travel sickness tablets but they haven't done anything. I'm trying to power through until my call on Thursday. I hate this so much I just want to know what is wrong with me 😔

That sounds awful.

I really don't want to freak you out because it sounds gastric, but my mum had ovarian cancer and it presented initially as persistent nausea even though that isn't usually listed as a symptom. You also mentioned feeling full quickly? That can also be a symptom.

It took a very long time for her to get a diagnosis and only when she asked the GP outright if it could be the cause. So while it's very very unlikely, if gastro tests don't show anything it is worth being pushy and asking GP for OC test.

I was actually worried about OC due to health anxiety a month or two back due to bad bloating that wouldn't go down after a week, they felt my tummy all soft they didn't class me as bloated but they didn't know my normal, They did the standard blood test for it the Ca125 which I know is not the be all end all but my results were within the normal range directly in the middle. I doubt it is that, well I hope it isn't anyway! I'm only young. 😭 I am so worried as to what could be causing it though. It doesn't help my anxiety at all thinking of all the possibilities 😔

Try sniffing medical alcohol, works better than drugs and is sometimes used in A&E

Same, ginger, peppermint etc. does not help me either. I am waiting for abdominal surgery and can barely eat, dreading post op if it stops working for me.

May I ask what you are having abdomen surgery for?

Don't take ibuprofen if you have stomach issues.

Have you tried peppermint tea?

Nausea is definitely linked to anxiety so sounds like you need to work on reducing stress.

StandardLFinegan · 30/01/2024 15:08

Op I haven’t read the full thread but just wanted to say I woke up with nausea for five years. It got worse. I vomited regularly (like morning sickness vomiting rather than food poisoning vomiting.) The nausea woke me up at 3 am sometimes. I actually slept with a bucket by my bed. Brushing my teeth was a struggle. I went to all of the doctors and did all of the tests. I was told “no this is nothing to do with your hormones or with gynaecology”.

I was on the mini pill. I don’t know if it was that but anyway it turned out I had a massive ovarian cyst and two large fibroids and had to have a full hysterectomy and ovary removal. The nausea went away the day after the operation and never came back!

Good luck to you x

TinkerTiger · 30/01/2024 15:17

The cause of this for me is acid reflux.
