Is there a virus going around lasting weeks?

So I was told I had early stages of pneumonia, I feel ok generally just an awful cold and wheeze. When I wake up in the morning I'm fine but as the day goes on it's like mucus is producing on my lungs??? I've never had anything like it! I have my energy back but the wheeze is scaring me. Not breathless at all.
Is there a virus going around lasting weeks? I've been unwell for a month now but the wheeze started about two weeks ago, I'm worried this has caused lasting damage to my airways..albeit I have asthma but it's so mild you wouldn't even think I have it at all, it's only when I get sick or I'm in cold weather that it's evident I do have a bit of asthma but apart from that you would never know! So I don't think this is asthma related...it's super strange and worrying

Also want to add, anti biotics are now finished. I don't think it's a case of the anti biotics haven't worked, clarithromycin has never let me down and I do have my energy back, it's just the wheeze/crackle that develops on my lungs throughout the day and the green runny nose I have

For peace of mind, see your GP

QuestionableMouse · 10/12/2023 12:15

I've had something since the end of Oct! It's RSV according to the practice nurse and I just can't seem to shift it. Horrible cough on a morning, achy randomly and some snot.

Loonancy · 10/12/2023 12:16

Yes there is.

There a recurring flu that comes for a week and mostly goes for 1-2 months then comes back the same for a week.
Pretty horrible. Seems to occurring everywhere, as colleagues in ME, UK and USA have all had it.
Not covid.

I'm not seeing my gp yet, I go there every week and I'm trying to control my anxiety

Yep exactly like me!

I thought so, at the moment I'm just filled with flem (sorry tmi) and cough still - anti biotics finished and I don't think I ever had an infection

We have had something for more than a month. Like a heavy cold, occasionally a cough, sore throat and exhaustion. It weirdly clears up for a few days and then comes back. Can’t work out if it is the same bug or if we all keep catching others.

greenacrylicpaint · 10/12/2023 13:53

rsv and covid are very high numbers right now.
flu is only just starting.
in most cases rest and pain relief will be all that's needed but if you still feel like shit after more than one week or it gets worse you need to get back to your gp.

Mindymomo · 10/12/2023 14:00

I had the same about 6 weeks ago, I was coughing up phlegm all the time and coughing up so much after a meal that I was physically sick. I do have steroid inhalers which I took 4 times a day, which I think helped with the coughing and wheezing, I also just ate small meals mainly fish and chicken as red meat I didn’t seem to digest well and would definitely be sick. I also made sure I had a long walk each day as this helped. I am a lot better but still get coughing sessions.

Lastminutebride · 10/12/2023 14:03

Yes, I’m on week 4 now. Didn’t know it was possible to produce so much snot. Not feeling particularly unwell anymore, just snotty and a slight cough.

Movinghouseatlast · 10/12/2023 14:06

I had Covid for 5 weeks recently.

I saw the physio at my GO surgery for something else and she said that is now it's presenting now. She also said it's everywhere at the moment.

afrikat · 10/12/2023 14:08

Sounds like covid to me

CornishPorsche · 10/12/2023 14:10

I'm on week 9 of dry coughing.... Xray at week 7 was negative. Week of antibiotics didn't change things.

And just as things noticeably improved last week, I picked up a cold and now have a disgusting snotty cough. 🤢

Yes, I have this. Just going into week 9 of it. I feel under par now, but not as terrible as I have felt, so hopefully it's on its way out ...

Not Covid, tested negative throughout the whole month

See a GP. Your asthma may have changed and you may need a change of medication. Also it seems that you have a persistent chest infection that requires antibiotics.

It's crazy! I have since heard it's been on news and things that a cold has been going around and lasting ages, I don't think I ever had an infection at all!

A family member has been like that for a couple of months now, with a persistent cough, worsening asthma and generally feeling like crap all the time. They just tested a very faint positive for covid yesterday. I suspect that's what it has been all the time.

Other viruses are available

What would it have been before covid ?

Same here tested negative for covid though my symptoms exactly like latest covid.
Maybe new covid not detected by cheap test? Though it's reported that they should still work...

emilylouisex1 · 10/12/2023 14:30

@Loonancy well my first tests I took were a month expired but did say negative...I took a few, then I went to buy some as I got worse and still negative, took one yesterday negative. I've had a fair amount of negatives to be faulty, it's a real bad cold, next time I will ensure I get my flu jab :(

@emilylouisex1 DH & I both had a virus lasting 6 weeks several years before Covid. It was horrendous- felt like we were drowning in mucus. I came down with it first, DH symptoms completely mirrored mine but 2 weeks later. It was incredibly scary. 2 lots of antibiotics did nothing nor did an inhaler. Even after we were better it was months before I could tolerate cold drinks - they made me cough. If I wanted something cold to eat or drink I had to have a cup of hot water at the same time. I hope you feel better soon - it's staggering how "just a virus" can be so damaging, not dissimilar to covid.
