Can't decide whther to go to the gym and do 20mins on treadmill (thats all you can do) or to try and do 5km but walk some or to go out and sick to the 2 miles that I have been doing.

cherryredretrochick · 07/04/2008 19:18

Done it!!!!!
5km in 33minutes.
Now I may go off and die somewhere.

spamm · 07/04/2008 21:36

Well done Cherryred - wow! Hope you feel great and enjoy the euphoria...please tell me you feel great !

I told my dh I had to go out this evening or I would want to give up. He practically pushed me out the door, but I did it and although my calves were killing me, it is easier to run through it if you are not being hailed on .

So that is number 5 on week 1. I will do one more and then move to week 2, slowly does it. But then, as I have hardly exercised for 10 years, this is good!

EffiePerine · 08/04/2008 08:43

Wow, lots of progress . Well done to thoserunning any sorts of distances ending in K (mind boggles).

Well, I'm on 5 mins run and 2 mins walk this week, it's def harder but I haven't died (yet ). Dh has also started at the beginning of the schedule and I think he is secretly enjoying himself...

EffiePerine · 08/04/2008 08:44

Spamm: I found my legs really hurt for the first week or so but have def got better.

Furball · 08/04/2008 09:14

wd everyone!

OP posts:
LilRedWG · 08/04/2008 09:22

I'm going to try to start again tonight. DH is away next week so I won't be able to go then, but will take DD out for lots of long walks.

Well done all of you, you are doing so well.

cherryredretrochick · 08/04/2008 09:24

Spamm and effie, well done stick at it it was not many weeks ago that 5mins killed me, my legs don't even hurt this morning, can't quite work out how I am going to double it though.
I was only dying for about half an hour and then felt so proud of myself.
Furball, I wish I had the energy first thing but it is quite nice going out when dh gets home as then I don't have to put dds to bed.
Got so much more energy that i am going to take dd2 swimming this morning.

Itsthawooluff · 08/04/2008 13:01

Cherryred - coo - how impressed am I. I did 5walk / 5 run / 3 walk / 8run / 3 walk / 5 run and managed to cover 4k this morning, so I still have a 20% increase to go if I want to do 5k by the end of May.

I'll get there though, I'm really determined.

Well done everyone.

I'm still eating my way through the children's Easter chocolate (ahem), so no weight loss yet

paddington99 · 08/04/2008 13:10

Wow, I've just found this thread. It's so inspiring.

Please can anyone help me?

I've been building up from a standing start since January, and am now covering 4k in about 33 minutes, jogging for about 7 minutes at a time. I felt progress was quite slow, but it was definitely progress. I'm 40, about 2 stone overweight (but losing) and have never run in my flaming life before!

Suddenly, a week ago I seemed to pull my calf on a downhill section. It seemed better after a few days but after about a minute of jogging on it again it pulled again! I'm so desperately disappointed - I really want to run 5k for a July Race for Life.

Has this happened to anyone else? How long did it take to get better?

cherryredretrochick · 08/04/2008 13:38

Paddington, have you got proper shoes?
The differnece it makes is immense. I would leave it until it is totally better even if that means leaving it for a week or two, walk if you think you will lose motivation.
Woolruff, I was doind that about 2 weeks ago but since I haven't had my internt for about 6 weeks I started making it up as I go along. 1 Lap of my local park is 1 mile so I decided last night that I would try and do the extra mile, thought I would prob end up walking it and build up but felt I could keep going so I did.
My legs were fine this morning but after taking dd2 to babysplash I am now officially knackered, I had forgotten how hard work it actually is, stopped going when I was preg with dd2 and now I can see why I did.
Everyone on here is so inspiring and I can't belive how positive everyone is.

debbiewebweb · 08/04/2008 21:40

Well done everyone - isn't it great that we can all be at different stages right now but all aiming for the same thing and are all able to inspire one another .
I managed to step up to 28mins running this week - 4km - running and it didn't kill me . So I'm pretty hopeful I can do 5km by May RFL. Problem is I've still lost no weight at all , but now I think its funny that when I go to the gym other people must think how come the fat woman can run for half an hour . Unfortunately it still means I get embarrased going out running in daylight in case someone sees me.

Furball · 08/04/2008 21:43

debbie - I think that for me is the best of all! I'm a size 16, I don't look like I could run a bath, but I can run 5K, it really wipes the smile of peoples faces when I slip it into conversations

LadyJogsAlot · 09/04/2008 10:42

am going out tonight. gonna try 4k in under 26 mins.

such a nice day today

Itsthawooluff · 09/04/2008 11:55

[Wooluff tries to think of a situation in which she can casually slip "I run 5k at a time" into future conversations]

bramblebooks · 09/04/2008 12:12

popping in to wave at you all! have just done a workout which involved doing running, then putting the treadmill on a steep incline and walking for a few mins - I could feel stretches in all different places.

Need to stretch out my shoulders as my shoulder 'seizes' sometimes when I'm running and it's so painful I have to stop - any hints?

Furball · 09/04/2008 17:07
  • wooluffy - You wait, you will! I suppose my 'just mentionng it' is to villagers who watch agog as ole frumpy comes running passed for the fourth time this morning. One even had the cheek to comment on the state of my red face, nearly decked them before running away!!!
OP posts:
LadyJogsAlot · 09/04/2008 20:39

hello everyone

i did 4k in 26 mins and 6 seconds.
i took about 30 secs off of my time from last time i went out so that's good.

i really found it hard and had to keep stopping for 30 sec walks, not because i had a stitch or was out of breath but because i had no energy. which is strange because i've eaten loads today!

i wonder whether i'd have more energy if i jogged in the morning.

Furball · 09/04/2008 21:01

I've been out tonight! did 30 mins. twas nice but prefer the mornings am feeling really tired now.

OP posts:
Itsthawooluff · 10/04/2008 11:22

Bramblebrooks - are you trying to keep your arms really high when you run, or clenching your fists, as I think tension can be transmitted into your shoulders that way? My hands are at practically hip level when I jog, and I have to make a conscious effort to keep my shoulders loose and relaxed when I'm starting to work really hard - at about 4 minutes in .

I do shoulder rolls and stretches whilst I'm doing the 5 minute warm up - which does earn me a few strange looks.

Wheelybug · 10/04/2008 16:19

I went out this morning - only did about 2.25 miles and didn't feel like I had the energy back from having the flu but at least its a start back ! Will start again in ernest next week.

cherryredretrochick · 10/04/2008 16:33

Well done wheely, it's that first outing after a break that is hardest to do so you will be back on ttrack in no time I'm sure.

Furball · 10/04/2008 17:43

weel done everyone.

love the quote wheeley - 'only did 2.25 miles' who'd a thought that when we all started after christmas? fab stuff!

Wheelybug · 10/04/2008 18:20

I know Furball. I thought that to myself when i was planning 'a quick 2 miler' . Hope that serves as hope for those just starting that if we lot can be saying these things .... you can too !

Can I share my grand running plan ? I feel if I tell enough people it might work ! I have always wanted to run the marathon but never ever thought it would be possible but now I'm beginning to see it might be one day. But, I don't want to rush it - I want to feel like I can do it no problems-ish when the time comes so.... unless pregnancy doesn't get me first (fingers crossed it does on sooooo many levels) I intend to do the following:

May - RFL Richmond (5K)
October - Wimbledon 10K
March 09 - Kingston breakfast run (the 8 miler not the 16 miler)
October 09 - Great North Run
April 10 - London Marathon (with Kingston breakfast run 16 miler for a warm up in March ).

What d'ya think ? Doable ? From September this year dd will be at pre-school 5 monrings a week and starts school September 09 so I should have plenty of time to run.

Then I guess I'll have to get a job (but am sure I'll have got up the stick by then... ).

IdrisTheDragon · 10/04/2008 21:52

I did my first running today . Am impressed with myself (but have very sore legs). Suppose that means that I must have been using some muscles.

Am looking forward to the time when I can casually say that I have been running longer than 60 seconds at a time .
