cor blimey ladyjogsalot! you do have bad luck with all this falling over.

You really do need proper running shoes though, you can really damage yourself by running in the wrong footwear.

yeah i know. it's just the money thing. i wanted to be sure i wasn't just going to give up and be left with an expensive pair of unused running shoes. i am going to invest now though as i am def not giving up jogging now i have seen how much progress i can make.

what do i do though? where do i go?

Hi. I started running in jan (i'm 44) in my fairly new £9.00 trainers which felt fine, I do not do expensive anything! . DH pursuaded me to buy some better ones so i went to a 'sports shop' and chose some adidas runing shoes reduced from £55 to £40, not sure I could feel the difference. However by beginning of march I was running 6 miles and my knees were killing me. Found a running shop in newcastle with a treadmill. Went along on a weds morning & was there for 1 1/2 hrs. Had to take off socks and shoes and roll up my jeans above my knees while they scrutinised my feet and legs while I stood in various positions. Then came a range of shoes and I was taken into the warehouse at the back to run around in different shoes with my jeans up above my knees!(They only use the treadmill if the warehouse is full of runners!) Assistant narrowed it down to three pairs & let me choose. I purposly didnt look at price tags but chose the ones which were most comfortable, these were asics and cost £85 & I can honestly say my legs feel better. Apparantly I have slightly high arches so need extra support to stop them 'caving in' and my legs twisting as i run.
So the advice i'd give you is what was given to me on another thread, find a 'running shop', however when I asked for advice on the runers thread 2 seperate people told me that £55 was quite cheap for running shoes so be prepared!

I ran in my new trainers tonight. They're a size bigger than my old ones! My toes felt so freeeeee! I got back up to 25 mins tonight even though it was windy and I hate running in the wind!

I waited til I had proved myself before I went and bought new trainers. I wanted to make sure I wouold stick at it.

Hi there, I haven't had internet for 6 weeks but have still been running away, I forgot to write the program down before I went offline so have been making it up as I go along, I am now up to 2 miles in 20 mins nearly all running (enthusiastically shuffling as SIL calls it).
I was actually dreaming about trainers last night as the last time I went out my feet felt dead by the end. I think I may go at the weekend there is a new running shop near us, prob is v expensive, I suppose yiu could find out what works in shop and then buy online, I couldn't do that though if they were helpful in the shop, they have treadmills as well, I did wonder what they were for.
Plan is to go for a drive and mark were 2.5k is aand then run there and back as I am getting bored of doing laps of the park, I am not sure i am quite where I should be I have only been going out twice a week due to moving house and settling in and stuff, need to focus now. Also need to loose some weight as DH has promised to go on oblivion at alton towers on my birthday in may if I get where I want to be.

cherry, well done go for it. I only started running in jan and did a 10k on easter sunday in 1hr and 10mins. 1400 people in front of me and about 100 behind me when i looked at official results but lots of people pulled out due to awful weather is suspect! Anyway have a look at these websites www.goodrunguide.co.uk & www.mapmyrun.co.uk (or .com?). They are fab. good run guide is free for 1 month then £10 for a year and you gon onto a map like google earth and plot all your runs and then keep the stats. its the bit i look forward to when i've been out for a run, coming back in to enter my time (I sue the stopwatch on my mobile phone) in my on line log book. cant recommend highly enough, have a look!

Am feeling depressed. I wrote 4 weeks ago about first night out training tearing my calf muscle. It had, i thought recovered, and i'd been gym and swimming no issues. Monday i started again - but this time with your sensible start slowly plan - and guess what? Fourth lot of one min jogging and it started to go again

I so want to RUN the race for life. Am really really fed up. Am seeing personal trainer/physio on Monday evening who hopefully can give me some good news/advice/training program to strengthen pathetic dodgy calf.

OK, did 8min + 8 min run but to steal Furball's exclamation - friggety biggety, can't believe I'm supposed to run 20 mins all in one go next time.

Get very red and bothered looking, and sports centre staff keep looking through the window into the gym - presumably to see whether they need to leap in with the defibrillator. Or perhaps because they've never seen a boiled lobster jogging on a treadmill before.

Me too, go VERY red. Very emnbarrasing and its one of the things I'm worrying about when doing the 5k RFL in public - in the daytime - with people watching! Worried all the medics are going to stop me!

cherryredretrochick · 02/04/2008 14:45

I actually stay red for the rest of the day, I take it as a good sign that my metabolism is still high although it could be that I am about to drop down. I am trying to decide whther to drag dc to running shop now and get shoes or wait.

Was supposed to go this morning but had to wait in for dishwasher repair man (IMHO much more important!!) but I'm on my last week run 1 - 30 mins tomorrow, don't quite know what I'm going to do after that, raid Itunes and make my own stuff I suppose.

lol wooluf.

i went and got trainers today.
nike 80 squids.
ds looked on in wonder as i jogged around the shop and on the treadmill
(he is much better today btw, hasn't been sick and has got his appetite back).

also the woman who fitted me said they have a jogging club on a wednesday at 7.15 (which happens to be when i jog) and they meet at the shop which is about 10 mins walk from my house.

i want to go but i'm scared. she said beginners are welcome and that they usually jog between 4 and 6 k.

think i'll wait another month or so until i'm more confident.

would be nice to run with others tho.

LJA, I too have my new shoes now, I was in there a bout an hour as apparently I have stupid legs (my words not theres) I have an 80squid pair of Brooks.
Furball, good look with that, i am now going to go and test run my new shoes.

Oooh jealous of the new shoes... I think I will have to go and get some now .

Well done on the 30 mins furball - I think there's quite a few of us now who have 'graduated' but still hanging around.

Ladyjogs - sorry to hear about your ds. Hope he's fully recovered soon.

Keep meaning to ask those who are using their own music now - what are your favourite running tracks ? I have a right old mix on mine but always on the look out for something new to run to.

Am laid very low at the moment with a really nasty fluey cold. I feel sooooo pathetic - can barely walk dd to nursery and back without feeling like I'm about to collapse so no running for me this week. Grrrrrrr.

wheely, i like bassment jaxx (sp?) to jog to.

i can't wait to get out tonight!

i am not following the prog anymore. have mapped out a 5k route and am using my own moozac.

how long approx does it take to do 5k?

Report
Wheelybug · 02/04/2008 18:32

I think the programme aims for 3 miles in 30 minutes. 5k is 3.1 miles. I have done the 5k in 27 minutes.... but it almost killed me .

Will look into Basement Jaxx (Wheely realises she sounds old before her time as I can't think of anything they've done )
