have been out for week 6 run 1 - quite hard work but managed it, prob because only one rest day since teh 20 minuter and had been for an hour's walk in the afternoon too

am going to be a bit stuck over the next 4 weeks - away on Tuesday, won't be able to run whilst away I don't think, then over the next 3 will be working nearly every night. not quite sure what to do about it, just run at the weekends in the day I suppose. I don't want to lose momentum, so I will keep doing one of the days and see how I go and then restart trying to get up to 25-30 minutes when it's all over (except then it'll be even darker in the evenings!)

bramblebooks, mainly I play the clarinet but I also do shows and play sax/flute as well - for the show I'm in over the next few weeks will be playing soprano & alto saxes, clarinet and piccolo (v.strange). Am of your grand piano. also play piano/recorders and sing in an early music choir too. hopeless with stringed instruments though!

Oh the shame I have just been to buy a pair of trainers. You know how you all talk about running shops having a treadmill and they watch you run? Oh no! Not in my running shop. Nosireeee. No. I have to run up and down the HIGH STREET with my jeans rolled up to mid calf

Never mind. Tis done now and I'm £70 poorer! I've not run for a week and a half cause I've had a throat infection and felt rubbish but I went this morning. Just did 1.5 miles or so to get back in the swing of it.

Haven't read the thread but hope everyone's getting on ok. I've got about 7 weeks til my Race for Life now. Anyone else entered?

I did my 2nd 28 minuter today in glorious sunshine at 8am, now it is grey and raining hard so glad I did it. Hope you won't kick me off here in 2 weeks time when I'm due to finish the podcast.!

pinkspottywellies - next time go in your running gear with a number on your back so shoppers think you are in a race

Believe me Furball I didn't look like I was in a race!! I hadn't planned to go but there was a parking space outside the shop on the way home so I stopped. Just got home and said to DH 'Guess what I bought?' and he said 'trainers from the running shop'!!! Luckily he'd only seen me going in though!

What is this podcast of whcih you speak?

Tried first run this morning - running 3 mins, walking 2 for 30 mins which seemed doable. Does that sound sensible? Am feeling knackered (went for a long walk with the buggy as well) but strangely cheerful

I think I'll have to try running the odd evening as well - I don;t work on Wednesdays, but have DS as DH is freelance and usually busy that day. Ho hum.

Effie, the podcast is linked in the OP. It's the MP3 version or you can find it on iTunes if you search for couch to 5k. It's by Rob Ullrey. If you've been doing 3 mins already you won't need to start at week 1. The programme is outlined on coolrunning.com

Good luck!

Oh and did I mention I had to take my shoes and socks off and roll up my jeans? Luckily (and this doesn't happen very often) my legs were fuzz free and my toenails were painted a lovely shade of raspberry. But be warned runners!

I'm going to do the RFL in May - only 6 weeks to go and I'm still on week 7 - so I'm hoping I'll be able to do 5km by then. But when I run on the treadmill I run at 8.5km/hr so it will actually take me at least 35 minutes to do 5km. So I will need to keep going past week 9 and then some

pinkspottiewellies that made me laugh. I had exactly the same treatment at fab running shop in newcastle, however they have a big warehouse at back of shop so ran around there with my jeans rolled up. I was quite shicked when they told me to take off my socks and roll jeans up and you could plait the hair on my legs at the minute !

Itsthawooluff · 30/03/2008 21:40

Hi Debbie, I'm doing RFL at the end of May and I'm only on week 5 - run 1, so might be a bit of a squeeze!

Wooluf you should be fine as long as you're getting 3 sessions a week in. I was able to do 5k after 10 weeks (having missed 2 separate weeks due to illness/business) and you've still got about 7 weeks to go! Stick at it! I think on the day the atmosphere carries you along anyway!

Misdee sorry to hear you're still poorly Hope it goes well at the docs. Look after yourself and that baby!

Theresa! It was entirely by fluke that my legs were smooth - doesn't happen very often!!

Thanks PSW!

Must admit I'm not looking forward to HUGE 3 minute leap to 8 mins for next one........but I never thougt I'd be able to run for 5 mins at a time, so will keep plugging away at it.

Furball - 28 mins, good grief. I can't tell you how impressed I am. Could probably still out sprint you to the pudding trolley though, as always previously was sprinter rather than distance runner.

[falls over laughing at idea that 3 x 5 mins runs makes me a distance runner]

All this talk about rolling up jeans made me dig out the veet this evening - lol.

Anyway, I did not go out yesterday, as the weather was awful, but I went out this morning before breakfast.

I don't think dh expected me to stick this far, but my little ds grins at me each time and says "how was your run, mommy?" each time I come back. Soooo cute.

Anyway, question from me - I am away on a business trip this week - do I just use the treadmill in the gym? Is it the same thing, or do I need to change anything? Common sense tell me it's just the same, but you may have hints or tips.

ah, that's teach me not to read the whole thread!

Have found a schdule on the Runners World website that looks pretty simply, so am more or less following that (I shuld be running 3 walking 1, nit running 2 walking 2 but sod it). Am planning to leae a but ealry this evening and get 30 mins in before picking up the boy from the CMs .

I'm still on the running shoes I bought a couple of years back - prob a Bad Thing but they seem to still be OK. Might splash out on some new ones if I manage to keep this up.

DH's kit has not yet arrived, so he is comfortably drinking beer and lounging about as he can't do anything until it turns up...

Sorry to hear you're feeling poorly Misdee. Are you planning to keep running through your pg? We are thinking of TTC no. 2 and I gave up at about 10 weeks with DS as I was a bit worried abnout things, but I may be more relaxes this time around.

EffiePerine · 31/03/2008 09:18

Spamm: I think with the treadmill you need to put it on a slight incline (o.5 or 1) to mimic outside conditions. It's easier running on a treadmill as it's smoother and no obstacles or corners to negotiate! I used to find it easier to keep track as well, as you can monitor your speed and distance better.

Hi all - well done everyone on starting and running longer !

I really must go and buy some running shoes - my trainers, which I bought for the gym, are about 8 years old.

Deb - I too am doing the race for life. Mine is mid May. You'll be fine, I promise. Like PSW, I started in Jan and was running 5k by mid march, had a few weeks off so went backwards a bit but now after another week back I am up to 5k again.

Although, I have to say, it almost finished me off. I was going to run 3 miles but mapped a course where I knew where 3 miles ended but I also knew that 5k (ok only 0.1 of a mile longer but...) fnished at my house, I added in some hills too (Have been planning routes that studiously avoid hills!). Anyway, I pushed myself to the 5K and did it in 27 minutes which I was pretty pleased about but then almost collapsed . I was coughing a bit before going and now have come down with full on croaky voice and cough so not sure which caused which - the fact I was ill and then ran or I ran which made me iller..... A bit daft really.

So... today should have been one of running days but I am sat on sofa feeling sorry for myself. I can't run tomorrow as dd is home so will have to hope I am better for Wednesday to get back out there.

Has anyone who's finished gone over to the other running thread as well (thats as well as this thread) - I like it here very much so don't want to leave here but I thought they might have some useful tips but am a bit daunted and whether they'd laugh in the fact of my 5k ....

Wow 27 minutes wheelybug - thats really impressive.
I changed my run a bit this morning and tried to follow a 5km route, knowing I wouldn't be able to run it all but thought it would be good to actually see how far 5km is. It was good to know I could actually carry on walking after my 25minutes and complete the whole 5km. Its given me a bit of a boost and I'm a bit more confident that I'll be able to run the whole 5km come mid May.

i went out tonight, got 1.2 k into my run a fell over. why do the jogging gods punish me so? it was more embarrassing then last time as it was light and there were many people in cars and someone asked if i was ok

i got grazes on my hands, elbows and knees.
boo hoo.

i had just mapped out my 5 k run too.
maybe i am subconsciously sabotaging myself.

i think i need proper running shoes.
