Will hopefully be off for a run later - have hospital appointment in a bit so depends how I feel after that (or how long I am delayed waiting !) but thats my plan anyway.

LadyJogsAlot · 11/06/2008 09:44

well done mate

Theresa · 11/06/2008 10:16

well done wheely i am dead jealous, my weight not really shifting, think i'm still eating too much!!

bramblebooks · 11/06/2008 10:30

Wheely, that is FABULOUS!

I have lost ... nada! and have had to buy bigger tops due to my new muscuelles. Ah well!

Go out for that celebratory run my girl!

LadyJogsAlot · 11/06/2008 10:41

brambles

Itsthawooluff · 11/06/2008 12:14

Dammit - 10 mins in and twang, something between the ankle and the lower calf has gone splat. So hobbling at present.

How long do you rest up for? (by which I mean not running, will still be walking)

Inelegantly removes pants from backside following wedgy............

wheelybug · 11/06/2008 12:45

oh god Wooluff - sorry to hear that. I guess just rest until it feels better ????

My new exercise tip - get really pissed off before you go running - I had an unsatisfactory hospital visit and decided a run would make me feel better (when did I start thinking like that ?!) and I just ran 10K in 1 hour. OK, would rather not have felt pissed off in first place but its some consolation. Got on scales after run and had lost 4 more lbs since this morning (do you really lose that much water when running or should I invest in some scales that cost more than £2 ? ).

LadyJogsAlot · 11/06/2008 13:00

wheely if you get some new scales, can i have yours?!

LadyJogsAlot · 11/06/2008 13:01

oooh wooluf

wheelybug · 11/06/2008 13:43

Nah - I'm going to keep them - they make me happy . Mind you, I wasn't saying that when I first bought them and I was weighing a stone heavier - I was convinced there was something wrong with them as I wasn't losing any weight - now of course they're the best thing since (nimble) sliced bread.

lilibet · 11/06/2008 14:05

Not smug at all LadyJAL, in fact I'm going tonight for the first time - dh is coming too, he's also super unfit, but doesn't have as much weight to carry as me

Will let you know how we go on - I think we are going along the canal towpath

LadyJogsAlot · 11/06/2008 16:25

lilibet, well done!
good on your dh for giving you support too.
my dh used to go out after me in the early days for support but he gave up long ago!

come back here and let us know how you got on

Theresa · 11/06/2008 17:20

Let us all know how you get on lillibet. Ogh dear wooluff, hope you;'re better soon. Wheely, sorry to hear about your appointment but what a flipping fab time!! Your scales are prob right, I always get weighed after a run to cheer myself up and have usually lost 2 or 3 lbs, but its usually back on againt he next day

bramblebooks · 11/06/2008 18:19

lady, omg how did you find that pic of me? I think it hides my willy really well.

wooluff, I've not seen my car keys for a while, could they have followed your wedgie?

running away because I can!

wheely omg omg omg, you rock!

lilibet · 11/06/2008 19:28

Promise you'll not all shout?

I did something very silly

got ready, dug my trainers out from the garage, blew the cobwebs off them and drove to the canal.

The 5 minute walk took us from car to canal and off we went. I thought my chest was going to explode!

It was really hard work especially when you have ducks hissing at you (but they had such cute babies!!)but I persevered until half way through the sixth minute of running when cramp set in - ouch, really, really ouch.

I thought that the 5 minute walk would be warm up enough and hadn't done any stretches

I then had to hobble the rest of the way back to the car and at that point realised that it was that long since I had worn my trainers that they now rubbed me. I had one bleeding heel and one with a blister.

I feel very daft.

But on the bright side I know that I can do the first stage. It's not going to be easy but it is achievable.

can I ask a few questions?

do you do all the warm ups on the cool running site?

Did you really only do each stage three times before you moved onto the next? I feel that it will take longer than that, or will soemthing miraculous happen on the third run (or fourth in my case?)

Off for a gin and The Apprentice

LadyJogsAlot · 11/06/2008 19:37

silly lili!
i generally stretch when i get home.
my warm up literally is the 5 min walk.
listen to your body though, you may need more warming/stretching.

i repeated week 5 for 3 weeks!
go at your own pace.
some weeks i could only get out twice and so carried on the 3rd jog the week after.
it's a very flexible program.

well done!

Theresa · 11/06/2008 21:16

Confession time, i never do any warm ups or stretches i did them for a while in around March as i had really bad knees but went to a good runing shop and got fitted with some fab trainers, knees have been fab since and i know its not big or clever but i've got out of the habit of stretching afterwards, and never did warm ups

SparklyPrincess · 11/06/2008 22:08

I'm sure I read on Runners World somewhere that stretching before the run doesn't actually help, and you're more likely to get an injury cos you're stretching cold muscles.

I only stretch afterwards anyway and use the 5 mins walk as my warm up. Just have to remind myself to walk briskly!

I've repeated runs and weeks before. I generally work on the basis that if I've managed it I'll try to move on but if I really struggled I'll repeat.

I really really felt like I was going to die when I first started! Now I can nearly run for half an hour!

One thing I've found really important is not to set off at too fast pace. Go very slowly to start with, you can always build up your speed.

Good luck!

wheelybug · 11/06/2008 22:16

I' m a rubbish warmer upper and cooler downer too. No stretches to start (sparklyprincess I read that too - you should stretch once you've done a cardio warm up) and now I don't even do a warm up walk. I just walk down my path, out my gate and start running. I've got a bit bad with warm down stretches too which may be why my left calf muscle is v. sore . Off to apply deep heat.

Well done Lili ! A great start (although shame about the heels) !! Yee haw !!

Furball · 12/06/2008 07:00

I don't do any stretches either. Just a few minutes fast walk to get going and afterwards. I'm sure I read somewhere that the fast walk should be enough? wasn't it rawb who said that?

Minum · 12/06/2008 07:24

I warm up by walking to my run IYSWIM. I always stretch for at least 2 minutes (touch toes, calf stretch, thigh stretch). Its become part of the ritual for me, and makes me feel like a real runner . I have very few injury or pain problems (touch every bit of wood I can reach), but cant honestly say whether the stretching is responsible.

I did each stage 4 times rather than 3.

And new properly fitted running shoes are so so important, made all the difference to my shin pains.

gscrym · 12/06/2008 08:11

Lili, I just finished week 1, tried week 2 on Monday and I'll be going back to week 1 for another few days. DH laughed at me when I came in, all purple and sweaty.

electricbarbarella · 12/06/2008 09:20

I do no warm up and stretches afterwards are minimal and only if something hurts.
I have also found that since I bought my fab trainers I have no need.
I have still not been out this week and am still feeling a bit crappy so am starting to worry abnout this weekend.
Would you take dh and dc or leave them at home and do it alone, will they be bored?

lilibet · 12/06/2008 09:49

I'm in pain

I can walk ok, with just twinges, but in the night everytime I moved my leg I woke up in pain.

and by the time I get to work I'm on the ninth floor of the car park and I looked like an old woman trying to get down the stairs.

May have to leave it a few days before my next attempt
