Hi everyone, haven't posted for ages but ...

... got to week 5 and did my 20 minute run! Really didn't think I was going to make it but I'm so chuffed with myself!

Well done everyone, looks like we're all going great guns at the moment!

SP xx

debbiewebweb · 11/05/2008 16:37

Hiya Everyone. I DID IT. It was very very hot about 27 degrees and really really hilly. So I didn't manage to run it all, I did it in 34.18 which I'm well chuffed with as when I first started out on this my goal was to do it in 35 minutes and I certainly hadn't banked on such tropical temperatures. I was a bit embarrased going in the 'runners' section so hung near the back but soon found I had to dart around a lot of slower joggers / walkers in front, but I guess they probably passed me later as I was sweating my socks off. Was great - goal next year - 30 minutes

Wheelybug · 11/05/2008 18:30

Yeah ! Well done Debbie !! Our first RFLer !! You should be v. proud of yourself !

Can I ask a practical question - were there distance markers on the way round (so I can countdown how far I have to go ??).

Well done sparklyprincess too !!!!

Glad you had a good time in Rome Wooluff !!

debbiewebweb · 11/05/2008 19:45

They did have markers Wheelybug - but at 1km they had marshalls and water and a marker and we seemed to get there very quickly. So then everytime I saw a marshall after that I was hoping it was 2km but it wasn't of course, until one marshall said your half way there, but after that it seemed to take forever to get to the 3km marker, didn't see a 4k marker but could see the finish line with about 5 mins to go so that spurred me on. I set my lap timer to beep every 7 mins so I could gauge it against markers, but I couldn't hear my watch as there was so many other people around, so there was really no point.
You'll need to go right at the front I should think Wheelybug, if you can do 7k then you'll be one of the faster ones, so many runners in front of me just stopped suddenly to walk and you spend a great deal of time running round people trying not to bump into them.

Minum · 11/05/2008 20:32

Well done Debbie - fantastic - hope you are having a really nice evening recovering, and feeling pleased with yourself

Thats great SP - you must be feeling fab

Good luck to everyone this week, and dont forget to drink plenty of water in this heat

Furball · 11/05/2008 20:52

well done debbie!

I did a 30 minuter at 8am this morning and it was hot hot hot then. We had a local half marathon today and 2 vilagers ran it and said the marshalls ran out of water half round - how bloody dangerous is that? let alone unbelievable of the organisers

LadyJogsAlot · 11/05/2008 21:33

my posts are very important and must be read twice

Wheelybug · 12/05/2008 11:54

Reading you loud and clear LJA !! Hope things aren't too hard looking after granny in law.

Debs - can I ask you another qu about the race ? Was everyone in RFL t-shirts. I only ordered mine last week and it said it might take 21 days to come so wondering whether I should get myself to JJB sports and buy one just in case ?

Have just been out for 5K - thought I'd better get some heat training in just in case its hot on sunday (although looks like it is cooling at the end of the week although no forecast for sunday yet !). It was hard but ok...

ditavonteesed · 12/05/2008 12:55

Well done debs, I have not been out for over a week now and am a bit worried I might be losing fitness, I am having enough trouble motivating myself to do everyday things. my rfl is 15/6 I need to get going as I want to do under 30.

Furball · 12/05/2008 13:27

Been out first thing (8.30am) for another half an hour. Christ it's hot. Makes it hard work. like it isn't hard enough already!

OP posts:
debbiewebweb · 12/05/2008 14:07

Wheely - Most people were wearing pink but not neccessarily RFL t-shirts, so if you have anything pink that would be great.

Diva - its really difficult to get motivated I know but I'd recommend doing as much as you can when you can. I managed very little in the few weeks up to RFL thro' to things beyond my control, so try get out now if you can.

I'm now wondering if I will remain motivated enough to keep it up now RFL over, we'll see.

ditavonteesed · 12/05/2008 16:37

I want a rfl top where are they? on the web site? I am going to go and buy myself some new running trousers, that might help, mixing retail in there seems to work best.
I just like to actually run somewhere and I was enjoying running back from my mums, can't really leave her with the dc now and when dh gets home he can't really run me somewhere to run back as is dc's bed time. I hate doing laps of the park.

Tommy · 12/05/2008 16:47

Can I join you?

Am doing the Race for on 13 July and haven't realy run at all for about 15 years. I have been out a few times and last night managed to run for 6 minutes without stopping

bramblebooks · 12/05/2008 16:52

Wow well done to our first RFLer!!!

Hello Tommy - cool runnings!!

I did a 3k training run today. My race is only 3 1/2 weeks away now ... argh!! The head of my son's school has kindly allowed me to keep a sponsor form at the front desk - and has announced this in the newsletter, so I'll have to do it now!!

eek - very excited, but a bit nervous now!

Wheelybug · 12/05/2008 17:13

Thanks deb - I do have a pink running top (dd was with me when I bought it... sigh..) so I'll hve that in reserve just in case. Could yuo look for some other runs to keep up the motivation rather than wait until next year ? Cancer research are doinga 10K in Sept if you're up for that or I think there are some other 5K's around.

Dita - why don't you go out and do a short run to get you back into the swing of things. Can you map a route around the roads near you rather than go round and round the park ? The RFL tops are on the RFL website - [[
www.raceforlife.org/buyyourmerchandise/ here]

Welcome Tommy !

Well done Furball and Brambles ! I think the weather is cooling so it might be a bit easier to run....

Wheelybug · 12/05/2008 17:14

oops sorry here

ditavonteesed · 12/05/2008 17:34

problem is it is very hilly here, if I went on roads I would end up going up some very steep hills.

SparklyPrincess · 12/05/2008 17:58

They're also selling rfl tops at JJB sports shops. Keep meaning to get one and keep forgetting to go in when I'm in town!

I'm feeling incredibly chuffed with myself actually. Probably a bit over-smug to be honest, but I don't think I ever truly believed I was going to get this far.

Well done Debbie - guess that means you get the couch-to-5k thread gold medal as the first to finish!

Theresa · 12/05/2008 19:41

Well done Debbie, you must be so chuffed. Dita I sympathise, it's awful when you lose your motivation, I hate hills and so am at a loss to suggest anything constructive except to offer a big hug

LadyJogsAlot · 12/05/2008 21:14

went out with the dog again. chased her around the field and sprinted after the ball trying to beat her to it (almost impossible)!

can really feel my muscles as sprinting and stopping/constantly changing direction seems to have taken it's toll on me. also i have an achey right arm from flinging the ball! dog owners must be fit.

cor i'm knackered.

Minum · 13/05/2008 09:54

LJA I think those changing direction type excercises are really challenging too, but they have really speeded me up - today I got further than I ever have in my 28 mins, and managed to sprint the last bit, unheard of normally as I've usually really slowed down.

Am feeling like a proper runner today and I've lost a stone since I started this program on Jan 1st

debbiewebweb · 13/05/2008 12:55

Wow, well done minum. I've not lost a single pound.
Diva - check out the terrain for your RFL - those hills may well be a big help, I pretty much avoided hills on runs and paid the price in RFL as it had one steep hill followed by long winding hill, which I found really difficult to maintain and it was at that point I had to walk for a bit.
Am still stuck at home with dd2's chicken pox, just another couple of days to go and then I'll have to get back out there I guess.

LadyJogsAlot · 13/05/2008 16:01

minum, well done and welcome to the 'stone club'!
it used to be the 20 minute club iirc on this thread but we're all well past that now!

going out tonight for a proper jog, want to try and do my 25 mins again - keep your fingers crossed for me
