SO hungry waiting for colonoscopy

orangadey · 08/11/2023 13:42

I had my last meal this morning at 8:30am. I now cannot eat until after my colonoscopy which is at 8:30am tomorrow.

I am starving. My head is pounding. I've had 1.5lt of water so far.

My prep starts tonight at 5pm... which I am not looking forward to.

I feel like cancelling the procedure right now because I feel bloody awful!

Sorry; I was going to ask for any tips or advice to get this horrid hunger pain to stop!?

I know its hard but you just have to see it as temporary, keep drinking the liquid, can you have herbal teas and things?

Go to bed early with a hot water bottle, put a scented candle on so that your other senses are being stimulated rather than your taste

worldwidetravel2017 · 08/11/2023 13:50

The prep is worse than the actual procedure

Missingthegore · 08/11/2023 13:51

You can have clear fluids. Drink some 7up original as the sugar will help with the pangs rather than diet version. Try orange / lime / lemon jelly (red and purple not recommended on bowel prep) or bone broth.

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 08/11/2023 14:00

Oh gosh, good luck - I have the same next week. Am not looking forward to the prep but more nervous about what they might find. I’m spinning between convincing myself that I clearly have terminal cancer and will leave my children motherless, and trying to remind myself that in most cases they won’t find anything sinister. Awful worried limbo at the moment, while trying to pretend everything’s fine as only DH knows.

SupermarketMum · 08/11/2023 14:03

I had lots of jelly babies before my colonoscopy - I think they’re allowed? Worth checking with the hospital.

although now I can’t tolerate them anymore, they remind me of the awful prep I had to drink!

Lizzieregina · 08/11/2023 14:04

Sorry OP colonoscopy prep is awful. Don’t you have any broth you could have? It won’t fill you up, but it’s better than nothing? Or some jelly as a PP suggested.

I’ve done it 3 times and will have it again in 2025.

newtb · 08/11/2023 14:25

I'm due m'y fourth in 2026. They found pre-cancerous polyps, adenomae, in thé first. Thé others are just follow ups. In France not UK though.

worldwidetravel2017 · 08/11/2023 14:36

@newtb dya mind me asking your approx age ?

They found & removed 3 polyps in an urgent colonoscopy when i was just 36 - biopsies - 2of each polyp came bk ok

One polyp was deemed medically large

I had a sessile serated one which gives me higher chance of bad future stuff

Consultant said what he found was rare 4 my age

I dont know any other early or mid 30s who have had multiple bowel polyps :(

orangadey · 08/11/2023 14:47

I'm vegetarian so no broth really. Jelly babies aren't veg either but I could get veg options

5 pm is not long to wait
You are doing great
No surprise your a bit hungry but it's so worth it just getting it done and out the way
No idea if you are at work or day off
Just throw yourself into a mind numbing task and sellotape the fridge
Sending restraint and good wishes from a far

Lizzieregina · 08/11/2023 14:55

@worldwidetravel2017 I’m in the US, so the first routine is done at 50. I had polyps so had to follow up in 3 years. No polyps the last time but due to history, still have to come in every 5 years. If you don’t have polyps or history here, you can go for 10 years in between.

Mum5net · 08/11/2023 14:55

Also go make sure your phone has full charge and that you have Vaseline for your poor little bottom as it's in for a bit of a shock later
Loads of Vaseline makes a huge difference
Also some thing like elder flower cordial as a chaser when you are having the drinking competition
Is there anyone else in your household tonight?

worldwidetravel2017 · 08/11/2023 14:57

You can mix the prep with lemon squash

Pjmaskmummy · 08/11/2023 14:58

This is the worst part about having one. I had strained minestrone soup and marmite/bovril drinks and that seemed to help with the hunger pains.

Lizzieregina · 08/11/2023 14:58

@worldwidetravel2017 I just saw your further post about your youthful age! Please make sure you don’t miss your appointments. While colon cancer is rare in young people, it does happen and a colonoscopy can be life saving.

worldwidetravel2017 · 08/11/2023 14:58

@Lizzieregina we have bowel cancer history in fam- my mums dad

I worry that they found significant polyps @ sucha youngage

LulooLemon · 08/11/2023 14:59

Seconding hot marmite drinks! Good luck OP.

Thank you for the care and kind words

In april 2023 my feretin was just 8

I had glandular fever in 2022..

Positive qfit test // poop test in may 2023

Urgent colonoscopy & polyp removal may 2023

Polyp biopsy results - all ok - june 2023

Currently awaiting andomen ct scan results as i have some other abnormal results

They re did qfit test _ poop test in jul or August and its now negative

They want extra colonoscopies though - understandably

Also had a gastroscopy on my stomach which was clear

funbags3 · 08/11/2023 15:09

I have endoscopies quite regularly as I was diagnosed in the early 90s with Ulcerative colitis. I have a colonoscopy booked for the end of next week.
I absolutely detest them. I've asked for picolax this time as it's meant to be easier to drink.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 08/11/2023 15:12

Not to worry OP - as soon as your prep starts, your appetite will up and leave.

Good luck with it

My mum is over to look after my children because my partner is away until late tonight. Luckily.
