SO hungry waiting for colonoscopy

orangadey · 08/11/2023 13:42

I had my last meal this morning at 8:30am. I now cannot eat until after my colonoscopy which is at 8:30am tomorrow.

I am starving. My head is pounding. I've had 1.5lt of water so far.

My prep starts tonight at 5pm... which I am not looking forward to.

I feel like cancelling the procedure right now because I feel bloody awful!

I'm such a baby when it comes to foods or drinks I don't like- my gag reflex is extremely sensitive! So I am a little worried I won't be able to stomach it at all!

5 pm is not long to wait
You are doing great
No surprise your a bit hungry but it's so worth it just getting it done and out the way
No idea if you are at work or day off
Just throw yourself into a mind numbing task and sellotape the fridge
Sending restraint and good wishes from a far

The procedure isn’t until 8.30am tomorrow, but the prep starts at 5pm, so no food until tomorrow.

Wishing you all the best for your prep/procedure, OP.

I only went to see the dr about my piles!!

Then because I had a private colonoscopy done ten years ago and had polyps removed (they were fine) the dr said I needed a check up due to bowel cancer history in my family.

I am dreading this.

Looking forward to the sedation though, I could do with a nice drowsy feeling!!

My first colonoscopy I wasn't offered anything, now, I take all the drugs they offer.

Consider using a straw so it goes over your tongue less etc

I mixed my prep with Sprite and safe to say was not hungry once that was down 🤢

Drink the prep gradually, a glass every half hr instead of bolting the whole 1.5lt down in 10 mins as I found out

Definitely echo the taking it in 30 min intervals

Yes @HeartandSeoul I understand OP is just counting down to the Prep, But as @AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds suggests once 5pm come there will be no wish to eat anything for a while.

OP, so glad DM is there to help. Try and laugh as much as you can and see the funny side. All the farting and pooping jokes. Just lots of chat to make you drink and smile your way through. You can do it. It's a pretty miserable process but so worth getting the results with nice clean prep

worldwidetravel2017 · 08/11/2023 15:39

Plan your fav meal to have 24 hours after etc

Took my body a few days to get back to normal
But many people feel fine 24 hrs later

Plan to have a chilled day - 24 hrs after procedure - take it easy - youll likely be tired

Apologies, I misunderstood your post

How long does it take it kick in? I have one litre to drink in an hour.

Bless you. It's a grim 24hrs leading up to the procedure. I puked in the morning and on arrival at hospital.
My insides were crystal clear though.
All the best Flowers.

My timing was to start mine at 730pm . I was a spectacular woose and struggled to take both my preps quickly. I think it took me until about 9.00pm to drink it all.
I was v lucky. Within about 5 mins of my last sip the clearing started and I was all done by 10.00pm
Then I had a bath and watched Graham Norton - my op was on a Saturday hahah

I am such a woose too!

My second lot is at 8pm I think.

I'd like it all to be done by bed time... that would be nice!

I'm up all night with my youngest as it is 🙃

I can't drink it!! I just gagged on my first sip. I put it in the fridge and put cordial in. Did the straw trick.

I think I'll have to cancel it because there's so way I can drink it.

Distract yourself with playing music

Make up a just squash lemon one

Then have the mix thats mixed with prep and lemon
Then some just lemon squash
Then repeat

Then 20 - 30 min of nothing

I gagged up the end of my first half a load

But prep was graded as excellent

Hold ya nose etc

Its hard but better safe than sorry

Mum5net · 08/11/2023 17:03

Come on @orangadey . You have got this. Just think you are on I'm a celebrity and get a few mouthfuls down, We will shout encouragement. Honestly, try a little more and tell us how you are doing.

orangadey · 08/11/2023 17:07

Just tried again and it's like my body is just involuntary bringing it back up!! I know it's vile anyway but god; this is awful.

I had a colonoscopy on Friday.
One big tip for the prep; keep it as cold as possible and follow up every gulp of prep with a nicer drink.
I stocked up on fizzy flavoured water and ginger ale which also helped with the hunger pangs.
Good luck tomorrow

Mum5net · 08/11/2023 17:14

Yep, imagine @worldwidetravel2017 , me and loads of others all converging on your kitchen. We know how nasty it is but slowly does it. You will get there.😂

@newtb dya mind me asking your approx age ?

They found & removed 3 polyps in an urgent colonoscopy when i was just 36 - biopsies - 2of each polyp came bk ok

One polyp was deemed medically large

I had a sessile serated one which gives me higher chance of bad future stuff

Consultant said what he found was rare 4 my age

I dont know any other early or mid 30s who have had multiple bowel polyps :(

My consultant said the same to me and I'm 51.

I didn't really process it at the time and didn't ask questions like what does that mean for the future, what can I do different etc.

If you don't manage it ask for Picolax next time. It is much less volume to drink. I think 2 lots of 150 ml.

Torganer · 08/11/2023 17:25

Ideally make up the prep in advance and put it in the fridge. If that’s too late, put it in the freezer for a bit. Drink with a straw and have an orange lucozade chaser. It’s horrible, so much worse than the procedure. I felt fine pretty much straight after my procedure but they make you stay for 30mins to make sure.

orangadey · 08/11/2023 17:26

I'm going to the hospital now; I called them. They are giving me picolax I think they said as it's a smaller volume to drink and more palatable apparently
