SO hungry waiting for colonoscopy

91 replies

orangadey · 08/11/2023 13:42

I had my last meal this morning at 8:30am. I now cannot eat until after my colonoscopy which is at 8:30am tomorrow.

I am starving. My head is pounding. I've had 1.5lt of water so far.

My prep starts tonight at 5pm... which I am not looking forward to.

I feel like cancelling the procedure right now because I feel bloody awful!

My consultant said the same to me and I'm 51.

I didn't really process it at the time and didn't ask questions like what does that mean for the future, what can I do different etc.

You can always contact them and ask.
Are they giving you a follow up one / surveillance one ?

Many sources say red meat is bad 4 those with bowel polyps
But ive had major iron issues

I dont eat processed meat like ham anymore

And i eat wheatabix daily - whole meal pasta - whole meal bread
.
Tis hard tho as i have CFS
And likely ibs..
Brown pasta - brown bread agrivates ibs but i need the goodness from it 4 other reasons

Ive had at least double digits referals in 6 months -
Iron iv
Gastroscopy
Colonoscopy
Gynae
Pos qfit test
Etc

B12 deficiency etc
Early miscarriage

You name it - ive had it this year

I have abnormal ca125
Awaiting results of ct abdomen scan

Theyve ruled out bowel cancer
Ruled out stomach cancer
Ruled out ovarian cancer

At least @orangadey you have a Plan B in place. Good result. We are here for you later if you need support.

I’m in the US, so the first routine is done at 50.

Now that's funny coz... my step-sis is in CA, her dad & her maternal gran both died of/with colon cancer. She was so keen to get an internal check. She didn't have offer / opportunity from her medical insurance company until she turned 62.

Then she couldn't keep down the fluids that are supposed to clear her out. They made her violently vomit. So whole thing had to be postponed.

My dad gets the procedure on frequent repeat because of piles? so is a recurring topic on that side of the family, what it's like to go thru it. I can't bring myself to ask directly, but may coax the update out of relatives fairly easily.

It's not proper hunger, it's withdrawal from sugars etc. and missing the comfort that food brings. Replace the comfort with pampering like a hot bath, foot spa, massage. I bet you'll sleep like a dream tonight.

orangadey · 08/11/2023 18:37

Oh wow Picolax and it's much better!!

The tea and biscuits will taste so good after the procedure.

Chewing gum is always my friend taking the prep and just in general when I have these types of procedures - maybe mints if gum isn't veggie.

Make sure you get a super lovely treat for tomorrow.

Good luck for the procedure.

@worldwidetravel2017

I had very low iron. They looked for ovarian and endometrial cancer. Did a fit test and it was over 200. Had a colonoscopy and they found mega polyps. Had a sigmoidoscopy at another time to remove them. Still waiting on histology results months later.

(I've since been diagnosed with breast cancer. )

Nat6999 · 08/11/2023 19:39

Boiled sweets like Foxes Glacier Mints, any drink with sugar, Lucozade would be ideal, black tea or coffee with sugar, herbal tea.

So sorry to hear about the breast cancer - hope they caught it early

Are we doing a sweepstake? I say 8.22 pm

Torganer · 08/11/2023 20:06

Moviprep took 90mins to work for me last time, was getting panicky as previously it worked in under 60mins! Good to know Picolax is better, I’ll get that next time. Just wait for the odd experience when you can’t tell if you’re weeing or pooing 😂. It’s oddly satisfying when everything is clear in the bowl!!

tothelefttotheleft · 08/11/2023 20:17

@worldwidetravel2017

Thankyou.

I hope all your investigations come back clear.

funbags3 · 08/11/2023 21:19

@orangadey Everything ok?

Para4u · 08/11/2023 21:29

Hope the prep is not too bad for you, that you get some sleep and the procedure goes well. It’ll be over soon and you’ll get immediate feedback. x

Good luck OP. Hope you are able to get some sleep tonight. I have all this to look forward to tomorrow. I'm dreading it now :(
The hints and tips are great though.

panicovernow · 08/11/2023 21:51

If you're still not moving your bowels drink a pint of water, it should help to get the prep working

CatchHimDerry · 08/11/2023 21:58

@worldwidetravel2017

I am 34 and had a 50mm pre-cancerous polyp removed this year.
they were shocked!

Id been back and forth doctors moaning about bleeding since I was about 26 so probably been lurking for years. I always got told “haemorrhoids”, which I knew it wasn’t.

Then it all went horribly wrong this year and we were forced into action, where they found it

It’s been tattooed now and I have yearly scopes planned until they are happy there no more appearing, then I’ll go to 3 yearly.

I have no family history and no risk factors.

I figured it’s just bad luck, even in younger ones like us?

moonriverandme · 08/11/2023 22:43

My husband couldn't tolerate the first lot of prep they gave him, he had an awful reaction, sick, shivering cold aweats. The hospital told him to stop, rearranged his appointment as there was no way he could have drunk anything else. He had pixolax I think & was fine with that. He's had about 3 colonoscopies now & has been fine with that prep, he's also had it for ct scans too. They found about 7 polyps & removed them all. He just has regular bowel screening now. Good luck with yours, the prep really appears to be worst bit. 💐
