SO hungry waiting for colonoscopy

orangadey · 08/11/2023 13:42

I had my last meal this morning at 8:30am. I now cannot eat until after my colonoscopy which is at 8:30am tomorrow.

I am starving. My head is pounding. I've had 1.5lt of water so far.

My prep starts tonight at 5pm... which I am not looking forward to.

I feel like cancelling the procedure right now because I feel bloody awful!

Early finished the second lot. I have been once so far... I was hoping it'll all be nearly done so I can go to sleep! Guessing I'm in for a long night

Ah okay. It's kicked in 😂 any ideas when it might stop haha.

Well, that was very short lived and I'm unsure if it's really worked? Not much more I can do though as I have drank it all. It wasn't clear like urine though the last time I went... and apparently it should be.

Maybe I'll wake up during the night and go more. Who knows.

I hope I don't have an accident 🙃🙃🙃

Did you drink plenty of water as well as the Picolax? I think you're supposed to - that's how you get away with a smaller amount of horrible stuff.

I had Picolax equivalent and was still fighting nausea the whole day till they gave me sone anti-sickness and anti-anxiety meds at the hospital!

@newtb dya mind me asking your approx age ?

They found & removed 3 polyps in an urgent colonoscopy when i was just 36 - biopsies - 2of each polyp came bk ok

One polyp was deemed medically large

I had a sessile serated one which gives me higher chance of bad future stuff

Consultant said what he found was rare 4 my age

I dont know any other early or mid 30s who have had multiple bowel polyps :(

I had bowel cancer in my late teens and with no family history of it either. Now in my mid 30s.

I therefore have regular colonoscopies - every 1-2 years. I have had a non cancerous polyp or two found in half of them.

I wouldn’t worry about future bad stuff. The point of regular surveillance is to remove any polyps that you have, so the chances of something sinister developing is actually low as a result, as they are found before they have the chance to develop.

Morning colonoscopies are tough, as you have to be awake all day whilst fasting. I always arrange mine for the afternoon as I find it easier to have a big lunch and can manage without breakfast the following day. Despite having regular colonoscopies, I know I would struggle with a morning slot which means fasting from the previous morning.

The end is in sight!

Well it was quite uneventful and I'm not sure it's fully worked...

Hope everything went well for you.

I start the liquid diet three days before, that way I'm super clear before the procedure. I have them annually (or I'm supposed to, Covid meant I had a three year break!). The prep is worse than the procedure.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 09/11/2023 13:26

Don't know if it's been mentioned, but if you do the consomme & jelly thing as part of the prep, don't eat red or blackcurrant jellies as if any of it's still around when you have the colonoscopy, it confuses whoever's looking at your intenstines!

How did the procedure go ?

orangadey · 09/11/2023 21:33

Hello!

So, it was awful not going to lie. I had one over ten years ago and I had a letter to give them today that stated they had to use a paediatric scope due to my colon being 'loopy.' But the nurse insisted she didn't think I'd need one today...

Low and behold I still have an extremely loopy and tight corkscrew colon and she couldn't finish the procedure. She said she nearly got all the way but it was impossible.

It was also extremely painful so they gave me more fentanyl- they said I did well due to the colon issue and the camera.

But! No polyps and just some haemorrhoids that I need to go back to get banded. So all good news on that front.

Today I napped and have had a very gurgly stomach!!

I’m sorry it was an unpleasant experience.

I get propofol for my colonoscopies and it’s the nectar of the gods!! Out like a light, no memory of what took place!

Mum5net · 09/11/2023 21:49

OP, well done, sorry it was harsh
