Smelly face on a windy day!

Has anyone experienced this? When most people come in from being out in the wind, their faces have a distinct 'windy smell'. It's not a pleasant smell. Please tell me I'm not the only one that's noticed it?! What is this smell and is there a way to combat it?!

I'm not sure about this being a windy day face thing, but I remember a distinct smell that came from men who worked outside in the cold. I couldn't put my finger on what it was I called it a cold smell. I remember smelling it on the postman at an office I worked at and my ex came home from work once and I smelt the same smell. Yuck. I always assumed it was from their clothes, a kind of cold dampness smell. I've only ever smelt it on men too. I wonder if we're both on about the same thing haha.

I know what you mean.
my dc have this when they come home from school (cycling). their jackets and hats as well.

I attribute it to evaporated sweat.
it goes away after a couple of minutes.

Mumma2Ro · 05/04/2023 20:22

Haha no I have never heard of this

tokyotea · 05/04/2023 20:38

I know the exact smell you mean but couldn't describe it for the life of me. It just smells like 'outside'. And it's not just the face but clothes too.

usernamechanged1 · 05/04/2023 20:38

I know the smell you mean. I hate it too.

hobbledyhoy · 05/04/2023 20:39

Yeah I know exactly what you mean. Everyone goes on about how much they love drying their clothes outside but there's a smell of coldness when you do it in a particular type of windy weather that I just can't abide.

MrBenFan · 05/04/2023 20:39

The outside smell?
I like it, it smells fresh! Like when clothes have been dried outside

Louise295 · 05/04/2023 20:40

As weird as it sounds. I can smell this on my children when they come in from outside 😂

Haha! I hate that too “ooh it’s such a good drying day, I’m doing my bedsheets so they’ll smell fresh and outdoors-y”.

I hate it. Give me the tumble drier any day. There’s nothing remotely nice about that smell from outside.

Yes this!
It's a cold sour smell.

QuertyGirl · 05/04/2023 20:41

God, we're so used to chemical smells that fresh air is upsetting

BluetheBear · 05/04/2023 20:42

Like a fresh air smell but not nice

totally know what you mean

Smartiepants79 · 05/04/2023 20:43

I love this fresh air smell! Love line dried sheets!

Ukholidaysaregreat · 05/04/2023 20:43

I love that smell. It's healthy.

THisbackwithavengeance · 05/04/2023 20:44

It's pollution.

cakewitch · 05/04/2023 20:45

It's not so bad when it's warm outside. Seems worse when it's colder.. I dried some bedsheets outside last weekend and they had that smell. Not nice at all.

HappyValet · 05/04/2023 20:45

Thank goodness there are others! I get so much stick for this feeling and for saying I hate clothes dried outside on a windy day.

I've always hated it - remember as a child objecting when my brothers came in from playing outside and the rest of my family looking at me oddly. Perhaps it's only certain people it affects? Like the whole thing with coriander.

HappyValet · 05/04/2023 20:46

It's pollution

Hmm, I hated it in the late 80s in very rural Scotland, so I really don't think it is.

Sparkletastic · 05/04/2023 20:46

I know exactly what you mean. It smells a bit like leaf mulch to me. Not nice at all. And we live in the countryside so it isn't pollution.

JarByTheDoor · 05/04/2023 20:48

Yeah I think I know the smell you mean, but no, I don't know any way to combat it, because I've got more important things to dedicate precious mental computing power to than whether my face smells a bit different from usual for a couple of minutes when I come in from a windy day. Like whether birds' feet get cold in winter, or how I'd redecorate my house if gravity started working sideways instead.

Me too , lovely fresh smell and reminds me of my mum when she'd walked back from work to collect me from the child minder.

Tonkerbea · 05/04/2023 20:49

Oh I love this smell! So fresh, but not like petrichor

QueenSmartypants · 05/04/2023 20:49

@JarByTheDoor the reason birds like to set on the overhead lines is because it warms their feet

VanillaImpulse · 05/04/2023 20:49

I love the smell of fresh air. When my cats come in from outside I love nothing more than a good snort of their fur Grin

carriedout · 05/04/2023 20:49

Yes I know the smell, but I don't find it offensive.
