Time for a new thread already!

Welcome to the thread, the purpose of this is to give anyone who is having any trouble with their drinking, a safe place to come and post about it honestly and without judgement.

There are many of us that use the thread for support and encouragement: some in recovery, others just needing a place to share about their worries. It's been going on in one form of another for a while now and has helped many people.

Thank you to all of those who have kept it going thus far, and welcome to anyone who has decided the time has come to ask for help.

Everybody's welcome, no matter what stage your drinking is at.

Jump right in, the water's fine

Ow - poor you! I'm scared enough of dentist even just for the scale removal stuff, hate it! Hope you're not in too much pain...
Garden looks so lovely at the moment, would rather be out there than inside working...it feels like Spring at last!

BrassicMonkey · 04/04/2008 14:12

Lots of MNers have different identities on here Gerbra, so they can talk about private issues without outing themselves. It's only frowned upon if you switch identities to have a go at someone or to say something inflammatory that you wouldn't say under your usual chat name. I wouldn't have noticed it if you hadn't pointed it out.

Poor you Kokeshi. Hope your jaw starts to feel better soon.

gerbrajess · 04/04/2008 14:25

Thanks Brassic... The other night I ended up apologising to myself (Gerbra to Greendays) for signing my name wrong?! I didn't feel stupid at all.... Have come to the conclusion late nights, whiskey and coke and dual identities are not a good combination!
Hope everyone's enjoying the lovely day
Gerbra x

FioFio - after a certain point in the evening, with drink taken, I'd probably do much better just to lurk!

BrassicMonkey · 04/04/2008 15:21

@ you apologising to yourself Gerbra.

Hello everyone. Since Sunday i have had 3 no-alcohol nights. One night I had two small glasses of wine (like a normal civilized person drinks), one night shared a whole bottle with DH (kind of ok? although I had the bigger half) and tonight me and DH have shared a bottle of wine and now he has gone out and I have just opened another. Oops.

glowwormish · 04/04/2008 21:20

Coco
that's pretty good, well done. I know I couldn't manage that. I am 3 large glasses a night -pretty much without fail, looks like a bit more tonight and a crappy night sleep to follow.
hello everyonbe, OH where are you and how are you?

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 04/04/2008 21:27

Thanks glowwormish. I have been trying really really hard, and was so glad to open the wine tonight. Before this week I was having roughly 2/3 bottle of wine a night, sometimes more. Taking it a day at a time.

One positive thing I've done is booked in for a couple of exercise classes next week. This means I'll be out the house for a large part of the evening and less inclined to drink, I think.

glowwormish · 04/04/2008 21:35

I really want oto get back into yoga but I cannot seem to find a class that fits in with my hours. I know I couldn't do an evening because the kids generally are not settled til 8pm and dp is not in til usually 8.30pm at the earliest. so would love to get into it

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 04/04/2008 21:40

my last post reads two-thirds of a bottle a night, btw, not 2 to 3 bottles! just re-read it and thought it looks a bit ambiguous.

I'm lucky there's a local place that does classes at 8.15, so I can put my DC to bed for 7.30 and go off to classes. DH is home by the DC's bedtime.

What about a weekend morning? carve out some 'you time'?

glowwormish · 04/04/2008 21:43

coco
i read it as two thirds and am impressed! I would feel too guilty doing a weekend stint. I work full time practically. We own our own biz and I will look again and try and sneak off when ever I can.

dandycandyjellybean · 04/04/2008 21:50

Am a long time kinda dippa in and outta, is it okay if i post? Things in my life are pretty good and have been for a while. I had a bit of a rough patch with my dh, but now realise that is totally normal after birth of ds.

my grip on the rest of my life is better, generally, and I am very aware of the few areas that still need some work. Like my alcohol consumption. I have levelled out (shock horror for lots of you no doubt) at half a bottle of gin a night. I realised that i was actually consuming the same amount of units with a bottle of wine, not enjoying it as much, and feeling much more de hydrated in the morning, coz i wasn't diluting with tonic, etc. So, for the time being, I'm not giving myself a hard time about this, just accepting it as the status quo for now, and dealing with everything else.

There are so many who are doing well on this thread, and I keep checking pretty much every day. Glad you're back to Kokeshi, couldn't quite get used to ornamentalhaggis??? Brassic Monkey, you're still my hero, hang on in there kiddo. And to everyone else... we just have to keep on trying.... {{{hugs}}}

dandycandyjellybean · 04/04/2008 21:52

Must just say, it is really nice to have a place where I can come and say that about the half bottle of gin and know that I'm not going to be judged. That is really, really precious and not to be taken for granted at all. I really do appreciate that. ...xxxx

CocoDeBearisCocoDeBear · 04/04/2008 21:59

is half a bottle of gin only the same units as a bottle of wine? I didn't realise.

dandycandyjellybean · 04/04/2008 22:08

half a bottle of gin, generally is about 12/13 units, a bottle of wine, 12 - 14 % is roughly about the same. doesn't it sound awful? a bottle of wine sounds so much more civilized than a bottle of wine, i know, I've been trying to persuade myself to go there for ages, but in retrospect, I realise that for me, with the tonic and all, the gin is actually better for me.

dandycandyjellybean · 04/04/2008 22:09

gin, so much more civilized than a bottle of gin.... that's what i was saying....

kokeshi · 04/04/2008 22:57

Hey cubby, great to see you back and so pleased things are finally looking up for you. If you are more at peace with yourself then other things will fall into place eventually. You're right not to give yourself a hard time, you've been through a lot.

Glowwormish, I changed from kokeshi to ornamentalhaggis for a wee bit - the only time I've ever changed my name - but as soon as I changed back I realised how little I actually liked the OH handle. Weird to get attached to random words...

Well done for your 3 drink free nights Coco. Oh and welcome back to the thread BrassicMonkey! Sorry how rude of me not to have done it before!

glowwormish · 05/04/2008 09:03

WHoa bottle of wine at 12/13 units? I thought about 10...is that just me 'hiding from the truth. i know it does depend on the strength. My wine is 11%.
Morning all, actually had a decent-ish sleep and didn't go over my 'limit' as I thought I might. I just delayed filling my glass up. I find if I do this then sometimes I don't drink anymore/don't want to.

dinny · 05/04/2008 18:28

God, I thought a bottle of wine was about 9 or 10 units!!!!
is that right that it is so much more???

anyway, this is my 10th alcohol-free day, really starting to get used to it now.

however, we are away on holiday next week and I can't decide whether to have a few drinks when we are out eating meals etc or to try and abstain altogether. if I drank, I'd drink under 14 units for the week (well, would try my best to)

what does anyone thing? or should I stick to my "don't drink till May" goal?

I would like to drink socially, but am worried I have a false sense of security now.

well done Coco, btw!

Gloworm, can you get a yoga DVD/CD?

gerbrajess · 05/04/2008 19:21

Hello everyone,
Well done you Dinny for 10 days - that's really impressive...and well down everyone else who's managed to cut down.
I had a bottle and a bit last night (to myself!) and felt AWFUL this morning (hangover). On a positive note, I spilt the full story beans to DP about how much I was drinking - he was quite surprised to hear I'd been drinking in the week but very supportive. Trouble is he doesn't see it as as much of a problem as I do - will be interesting to see how next week pans out.
Went on a beautiful walk on the coast today - it's been so long since we've done it and really helped to blow the cobwebs and hangovers away!
Hope everyone's enjoying the weekend...off to look blankly around kitchen and get inspiration about what to cook...
Gerbrax

BrassicMonkey · 05/04/2008 19:43

Cubby, lovely to hear from you again. I'm really glad that life is being good to you .

Well done Dinny - 10 days is great. I don't know your history so don't know what to suggest about abstaining during your holiday. Hope you enjoy it though anyway.

Lots of posts on here about how many units are in wine recently. Unless my understanding is wrong, the alcohol percentage refers to how many units are in each litre of product. So a bottle of wine at 14% contains 14 units per litre, or 10.5 per 75cl bottle. As for spirits, I only know about vodka, which is 37.5% standard. So that's (approx) 40 units in a litre, 28 in a bottle (70cl), 14 in a half (35cl) and 8 in a quarter (20cl).

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong about the above.

Hope everyone's having a good weekend. It's the end of term holidays here now so I'll have plenty to keep me busy for the next 2 weeks.

glowwormish · 05/04/2008 19:49

Hi Dinny well done! I wouldn't be able to control myself so I can't say! Good luck anyway! Its a good idea for a dvd but we don't have the player hooked up and its going to be in the bedroom anyway (not enough room). I am still determined to find a day time yoga session and just skive off. At least owning your own biz, you can just do that. I jsut feel guilty leaving my dp to it but i know he'll understand.

Gerbra, well done for telling dp. its great he's supportive even though he doesn't think its a prob. I LOVE walking and you're right, its great to blow the cobwebs away. I just wish we had more time fopr it . we usually go for a walk when dps parents look after tinkles. Its a life saver

Kokoshi...must be my 'wet brain' i am really rubbish at piecing all the posts together and remembering who is who and does what!!!

glowwormish · 05/04/2008 19:51

Oh and I'm putting off my first drink of the evening but now dd wants to play charlie and lola on beebies lol what do I do? I'll tinker around.
