Anyone else have a very weird severe flu like illness?

DH and I have come down simultaneously with a strange flu-like illness. It's an URTI but we've both been running over 38c for 3 days now and just getting worse. Repeated negative LFTs. Flu vaccine +
I'm hearing of some weird non-covid flu like illness sending people to a&e (apparently swabbing neg for RSV and influenzas too). Has anyone seen much of this? This is extremely bad.

I’m on day 10 of this, and feel completely shattered. It started as painful tonsillitis and seemed to be improving by day 6. But then day 9, wham, painful chest, shivers, fever, aches all over and can’t move for exhaustion.

How long has it taken most people to be functioning again??!

I’ve had flu vaccine this year and have been swabbed and confirmed flu A with the symptoms you are describing. So I would suspect flu (I already did before my swab, had done covid tests which were negative, and tbh feel much worse than I did when I had covid in the past).

The same here. Vaccine in November and swab positive for influenza A today (I bought some influenza LFT) online.

Caspianberg · 21/12/2022 17:05

@Lilfirth - I’m feeling better the last week, about 8 weeks in unfortunately. Same thing with feeling terrible 2 weeks, thinking I was over it, then exhausted and cough etc still for weeks

crimsonpeak · 21/12/2022 17:07

Yes. I feel absolutely dreadful. Eldest DC came down with it about 3 days ago and it’s worked it’s way through everyone except my DH. High temps, cough, constant runny nose. I’m asthmatic so quite concerned. Sats are fine currently though. I have the flu jab and am boostered up to the eyeballs covid wise due to work. I hope it passes soon!

Lilfirth · 21/12/2022 17:10

@Caspianberg 8 weeks?!! Gosh you poor thing. That sounds awful.

like others I got my flu jab in October, so it’s especially galling to feel so terrible!

Mincespi · 21/12/2022 17:11

I’m just coming out from this 4 weeks later.
Started off with sore throat, runny nose etc, into the worst heavy cold I’ve ever had.
Ended up with sinus infection, conjunctivitis and fatigue.
Im still knackered with eye and chest pain now.
It was the worst virus I’ve ever had, including covid. Thank god for Night nurse and endless cups of tea.

CottonSock · 21/12/2022 17:27

I'm 2 weeks in and still coughing and feeling tired. I've had the flu jab and so has dd.

romdowa · 03/12/2022 10:50

Yep we've had it here all week. Baby was sick for 2 days. Myself and dh are still sick a week later, I'm worse than he is. I'm fully convinced it's some new strain of covid. I haven't been this sick in years, not even when I had pneumonia.

Romdowa, my toddler also got better after two days. Did your baby stay well? I am terrified that my little one will start getting ill again.

MrsMariaReynolds · 22/12/2022 13:08

I'm on the second week of feeling an absolute wreck. Started with a very painful sore throat early last week, that quickly vanished with no other symptoms. Then, on Sunday I felt like I was hit by a bus, with fever, chills, nausea, dizzyness and achiness in my legs. I woke up the next morning with a tickly cough that has gotten worse as the week has progressed, all the while showing negative tests for Covid.

All I want to do is sleep, but Christmas prep beckons 😭

SaturdayGiraffe · 22/12/2022 15:06

I have found a thread on twitter. Lots of people hit.

@SaturdayGiraffe
Thanks for link, I had a look and a lot of people are going through a similar thing. I am on day 10 and daughter day 11. There is a prominent smell of mucus in my mouth and nose and feel really spaced out. Having a lot more rest during the day which sometimes makes the nausea worst so I do prefer to walk around when I feel quite nauseated, also having a lot more rest has made me more aware of my heart fluttering and doing weird beats (I do suffer from PAC ectopic beats). Eating is a mission having small bites of food here and there. Get well soon everyone x

Bighugs88 · 22/12/2022 21:00

@Forfrigz @NeverTooLateToSing

I am on day 10 of being ill have been to the doctors twice they think I have a viral infection either covid or flu. Gp said chest is clear. Have a hacking cough which is making me so tired and my chest hurt.
Wanted to ask you guys does the nausea get less as you recover.
I am still very nauseous I keep gagging, can hardly eat and been having abdominal pain. Really congested in the nose and have a horrible smell and taste in my mouth of mucus and rusting metal.

Meltinthemiddle · 22/12/2022 21:29

Very interesting about not wanting to eat that's exactly how I feel!

Bighugs88 · 22/12/2022 21:57

@Meltinthemiddle
It's really bad right 😪
Appetite has gone out the window since I became ill 10 days ago.

Seeriously · 23/12/2022 06:48

I am just over 2 weeks in and have some lingering symptoms - in particular fatigue and very blocked nose.
but wanted to say my appetite is slowly coming back to normal and I would say the nausea stopped a few days ago.

LostThePot · 23/12/2022 10:17

I’ve never felt so unwell before. I had diagnosed flu 10 years ago and this feels worse than that.

Day 5 here and no signs of feeling better yet. Guess Christmas will have to be postponed.

Hope everyone feels better soon.

Meltinthemiddle · 23/12/2022 10:50

Might actually lose weight this Christmas for the first time ever!

Bighugs88 · 23/12/2022 21:36

@Seeriously
Hope you feel better soon, it's nice to know that the nausea has stopped.
I am feeling slightly better that I was able to eat today without feeling nauseous and the gagging is less, but still have a lingering barking tickly cough.

@LostThePot
Wishing you feel better soon. It's awful right? I am on day 12 the beginning was really really bad with fever, shivering, congestion. Still have a horrible cough but beginning to eat.

My daughter was seen by the gp today (third visit) and has been prescribed antibiotics as it seems fighting this virus infection has caused her to have a slight chest infection so gp as a precaution prescribed antibiotics as her cough is also really bad especially at night.

C1239 · 24/12/2022 07:45

Think I’ve got a similar thing to everyone else- headache, body aches, ear ache, feeling nauseous … just want to cry this morning!!

Oh no C1239 I hope you feel better soon. What a rotten start to Christmas though 😞. This is exactly how I felt, no real cold or cough in the beginning just a sore throat and all that you described with fever and shivers. I'm ending on a cough though.

C1239 · 24/12/2022 11:15

How long did it take to go away for you @Meltinthemiddle ?!

Bighugs88 · 24/12/2022 11:49

On day 13 and have a barking cough with ongoing tiredness and sinusitis (my teeth hurt and my head). The nausea is less but still have intense stomach cramps prior going to the toilet to open bowels.

@C1239
The fever and chills went after 5 days but there are other lingering symptoms. My family have also been ill and are still recovering after 2 to 3 weeks from start of symptoms.
Hope you and everyone feel better soon. It's really bad and knocks you straight out

Meltinthemiddle · 25/12/2022 17:59

C1239 · 24/12/2022 11:15

It's been a week and normally I bounce back by now. I have a lingering cough which makes me feel rough first thing, my teeth are also now sensitive and I still have little appetite. Has everyone tested for COVID? Mine was negative. DH has now woke up feeling rough.

CreatingHavoc · 25/12/2022 19:30

Me and my 6yo are suffering with something awful. I had about a week of feeling run down and like I had a cold then dd got a temp in the night on Wednesday and me Thurs evening. Sinus pressure is bad, headache nausea. Dd has ear pain and lots of snot too. We both have a dry tickly cough. I actually had antibiotics prescribed by the gp just in case it persists over the Xmas weekend but I'm hesitant to use them as dd has it too so I'm guessing it's viral. I had a day yesterday when I thought were getting better but no such luck, fever returned for both us today. Think we'll have to go to out of hours if no better tomorrow.

PritiPatelsMaker · 26/12/2022 01:00

I've had it too. Was sent to Hospital by GO and was negative for Covid & Flu after swabs. Was given antibiotics and sent home. 3 days later I didn't feel any better so asked GP for steroids. She prescribed them over the phone and said she was very concerned about me and if I got worse I was to go straight to hospital. Ended up in Hospital the next day. Again the swabs were negative but the chest infect did respond to IV antibiotics.

I've had chest infections and flu on and off for over 29 years and can honestly say that I've never felt that ill.
