Anyone else have a very weird severe flu like illness?

DH and I have come down simultaneously with a strange flu-like illness. It's an URTI but we've both been running over 38c for 3 days now and just getting worse. Repeated negative LFTs. Flu vaccine +
I'm hearing of some weird non-covid flu like illness sending people to a&e (apparently swabbing neg for RSV and influenzas too). Has anyone seen much of this? This is extremely bad.

Recently I've been runny nose, coughing, and sore ish throat hope it's recovering

Eurydice84 · 03/12/2022 10:36

DH has been downplaying the severity of this flu which I am finding irritating. I haven't been this ill in years and years, COVID was much milder.

nicky2512 · 03/12/2022 10:49

I had similar but tested positive for covid after a week. Almost a week after that I still feel terrible.
strange though that I was negative for so long.

romdowa · 03/12/2022 10:50

Yep we've had it here all week. Baby was sick for 2 days. Myself and dh are still sick a week later, I'm worse than he is. I'm fully convinced it's some new strain of covid. I haven't been this sick in years, not even when I had pneumonia.

IClaudine · 03/12/2022 10:58

I had something end of October/start of November. Have not felt so ill for years and years. Floored me for a good two weeks. Tested negative for covid. I still have a tiny bit of a cough now and again and my energy levels are a little lower than normal.

camperjam · 03/12/2022 11:06

I am getting over it now, I was ill for an83 weeks. I haven't felt this awful in years, I spent a while week in bed. It left me feeling exhausted.

Somuchgoo · 03/12/2022 11:24

Me!!

I'm 99% sure it's not the flu (not the predominant strain anyway). My youngest has this awful bug (which I've caught) and hers is unlikely to be flu as she had it 6 weeks ago (confirmed by a lab on the basis of swabs), and has since then also had the vaccine.

Day 3 in bed for me.

Me, my husband and my mum. Can’t remember last time I felt this bad. My husband is one of those annoying people who never get ill but it’s hit him like a train. And yes to depression with it - that hit me totally out of the blue last night

I am glad I am not the only one with depression. Someone upthread mentioned it is common with flu. It is certainly very wretched though and has come as a shock

notacooldad · 03/12/2022 14:09

Nearly everyone I know seems to have had this at some point over the last 6 weeks including me. Absolutely awful.
Every single member of staff in our team of 22 has been off at some point with it. Some not as bad as others but the ones that have been floored for longer also have other conditions eg diabetes.

Adarajames · 04/12/2022 03:26

Urgh, yes! End of week 3 now I think, 2 weeks of total loss of voice although not sore throat. Coughing so much my ribs are now really painful. Feeling hell of a lot better than I did, but still feeling bit grim

tara66 · 04/12/2022 04:17

Yes I have it - that's why I'm awake now.

Ulysses · 04/12/2022 04:36

DH has been admitted to hospital. Docs have tested negative for covid and flu an are developing cultures to see if it's a type of pneumonia associated with being immunosuppressed (he's a renal transplant patient). He has had sweats, cough and aches for over a week. Last year he was hospitalised with Covid for 11 days and he was much worse and needed oxygen. All his vaccinations are up to date.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 04:42

Oh bless your dh. And you. 💐 hopefully he’s back with you soon.

I have pneumonia & burning lungs which are keeping me awake but Sats are ok. Got checked out earlier in a&e as was a bit worried but all ok. Mine isn’t covid either & up to date with covid & flu jabs. Immunosuppressed also here.

Dyra · 04/12/2022 05:32

Yup. Me and DS (8mo) have got it.

Either I've not been hit too hard, or the worst is yet to come. My poor DS though has had it rough. When he's not sleeping, he wants to be. Extremely snotty. Vomiting large amounts of mucus periodically. Gone off solids. BFing ok though thank goodness. On and off fevers. Breathing fast. Doctor said ok to stay at home for now, but any worse and they'd want him to go to hospital.

DNephews (5 and 1) and DSis have all just recovered after ~2 weeks of it too. Currently spreading around DD's nursery like wildfire.

DH and DD are weirdly still ok. Usually they're the ones that go down with everything going.

ByTheGrace · 04/12/2022 05:36

Yep, the teen and me both have had it. The teen ended up in hospital after collapsing, they hammered her with IV antibiotics, but all tests came back negative, bar mild signs of infection.
I recovered after 5wks, the teen is still exhausted, it wasn't that long since they had a severe chest infection, and a sickness bug weeks before that.
We've both been like this since the first covid jab though. Just one bug after another, I've just had conjunctivitis, never had it before in my life and cold after cold, yet never used to catch these things.
I wasn't isolated over lockdown either, DH worked out of the house all the way through and I was volunteering. So that can't be the reason.

Eurydice84 · 04/12/2022 06:52

First night without high temperature but the cough has got so bad and violent, like I have never had before. I can barely stop coughing and it's hurting like hell. Will ring the GP today or on Monday.

vegum · 04/12/2022 10:34

Yes I started a week ago. High temp, shivering, headache and pains. Sore throat and cough. Temp normal after 4th day but still feeling weak and tired. Coughing a lot and ears feel blocked now. Had covid vaccine a month ago but hadn't got round to getting the flu vaccine.

Welshy26 · 04/12/2022 10:48

I'm on day 5 and each day I feel worse. Chest is painful, temp up and down, full of catarrh, nose and eyes streaming, severe headache, earache, face ache and negative covid test. Also feel very depressed which isn't something I've felt before.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 12:23

This is how I started now have pneumonia so keep an eye on it

Nugg · 04/12/2022 12:25

Yes 6 weeks ago which left me with a nonstop cough ending up being diagnosed with pneumonia- thankfully some hefty antibiotics have chased it away mostly!

MissMarpleRocks · 04/12/2022 12:27

Lucky you

on my 3rd lot & steroids & it doesn’t seem to want to disappear in a hurry. 4+ weeks nos

MissAmbrosia · 04/12/2022 12:34

I had to retrieve Dd (18) from Uni on Thursday and she's still on the sofa, crying this morning as she has exams after Xmas and doesn't want to miss any lectures. Sore throat, headaches, aches, shivers - can't remember the last time I saw her so ill. Temp seems to respond to alternating Paracetamol/ibuprofen but she's definitely poorly. Fingers crossed DH and I are both OK as yet. I had my flu jab a few weeks back. DH hasn't had one.

ScrollingLeaves · 04/12/2022 20:56

DH has been admitted to hospital

I am so sorry, I hope he will recover soon with the good treatment he’ll get there.

Lougle · 04/12/2022 21:13

I'm not sure, tbh. I don't think I have a fever. No sore throat. But body aches & exhaustion. We keep sheep and I need to deal with some lame ones tomorrow. Just hosing down their legs and checking for injury/infection. I nearly cried at the thought of having to do it. Sounds so stupid.

DH has a heavy cold/cough. He's phoned in sick for tomorrow, which is unheard of.

SammySawdust · 04/12/2022 21:18

I'm just recovering from flu. Was in bed a week. It was 100 x worse than covid. I had a flu jab in October.
