Zoe Nutrition Testing

1000 replies

Wombat27A · 15/06/2022 08:15

Not sure this is the right place for this...

Anyone else doing the Zoe Nutrition Testing?

My results were poor, so now I'm tackling my diet. I thought it was pretty good but it's clear it needs a major overhaul. So much information but finding it good.🙂

@lugeforlife what’s the menopause podcast called? I may have missed it upthread.

I’ve been listening to Chris and Xand Van Tulleken podcast ‘A Thorough Investigation’ all about UPFs - twins but Xand is 20kg heavier than Chris. V interesting so far!

Cannot WAIT for my poo results @Wombat27A 😄

Wombat27A · 16/07/2022 18:11

I really liked that podcast, didn't drift off!

Right, as I wait for dh and dd's dinner to cook (I had a lovely veggie curry - smug...)

Menopause with Louise Newsom

She views menopause as a negative health event rather than a life stage as it has tangible impact on health outcomes

She suggested HRT sooner rather than later for most protective benefits

She debunks the HRT health risks and says initial study flawed.

Says need to consider diet/exercise as well as HRT.

HRT can help with weight loss but even so, peri meno fucks with all kinds of metabolic processes so to feel better you have to do things differently and look at diet. Sounds like they are doing a joint Zoe/menopause study into nutrition issues.

Exercise - do some. Interestingly testosterone supplements may help here (not sure if testosterone drop is a peri or just an ageing thing).

I think if you've looked at her stuff before there was nothing new tbh but as she specialised in metabolic medicine before she was a gp, that linked nicely with the Zoe stuff.

GardenExpert · 16/07/2022 18:16

Thanks for the replies, I think I'm going to go for it.

lugeforlife · 16/07/2022 18:17

@MassiveSalad22 it's one of the Zoe podcasts. One of the first ones I think.

I can't listen to the ones by the Operation Ouch chaps. Not because of me (I've read why we Eat, I get it) but because dh has such a shite diet and I have 2 teenage girls who can be funny around food. I have cut back on a lot of pre packed stuff but as a family we do eat too much of it. When I suggested swapping to bread from the bakery I got such a negative response so I have to pick my battles. If I listen to that podcast I know I'll feel like such a bad mother!

MassiveSalad22 · 18/07/2022 08:04

Zoe 103 is annoying me already, it is assuming I don’t already eat a ton of veg and have never tried a beetroot before 😄

Wombat27A · 18/07/2022 08:59

Yep, can't disagree with you there...

I had to tune out a lot of this as we're really veggie now. Been working on the 30+ veg thing for a while.

I've started 301 this morning. I also had fruit sponge for breakfast, so maybe need to concentrate a bit harder. It was lovely tho. With Greek yoghurt in a small bowl, so maybe I do listen a little bit! :-)

I’m doing my glucose challenges at the moment. What I already suspected confirmed by my 3 slices of white bread yesterday. Absolutely massive spike! Peanut butter today - barely a blip.

Interestingly I had apple cider vinegar before eating pasta for dinner last night and my curve stayed relatively flat. I think I’ll test that in a more controlled way this week as one of the extra challenges. As usually my curve gets spikier towards the end of the day.

chutneypig · 18/07/2022 11:27

I was quite disappointed that the ACV didn't flatten my cake spike @Flockameanie - should probably have tried something more sensible like you did.

Hope everything arrives soon so you can get going @GardenExpert

The 30+ approach was a bit meh for me too. It felt a bit flat after the previous two weeks, like it's just a filler. Think they could do more with this section.

Had Greek yogurt and nuts and berries for breakfast - never had that before and I'm not starving hungry yet so that's a good sign I think

FinallyHere · 18/07/2022 11:59

Anyone already got their results and found salad veg in the food section. I can honestly only find cooked celery, cooked cabbage etc.

these are my basic foodstuffs, I can't believe they retain all their goodness when cooked. So odd to not find the raw equivalent

FinallyHere · 18/07/2022 12:00

Surprised myself that I had eaten more than 30 kinds of plant stuff

Flockameanie · 18/07/2022 12:57

I really want the ACV thing to work @chutneypig as it’s such an easy ‘hack’ (I don’t mind the taste), so I’m testing it properly this week as one of the extra challenges. I’ll report back.

Wombat27A · 18/07/2022 13:29

I've got raw cabbage (86) but I can't see raw celery.

My worry with the ACV is about tooth erosion. I actually like the taste.

Thanks for the menopause precis. Very much appreciated.

I've had a bit of difficulty with my HRT prescription the last couple of months. Supply issues. Interesting about the testerone, tho I'm not sure I'm up for any further fights with the GPs.

I started my glucose challenges today and to my surprise found that three slices of white bread had barely a discernible impact. Yet ‘normal’ meals where I’ve had potatoes or rice, it’s spiked massively.

One of the things I’m finding so interesting about this thread is just how varied all our responses are.

Flockameanie · 18/07/2022 15:38

Absolutely @QueenofWhatever. I am envious of all of you who manage starches well.

I just did the first part of an extra challenge and had a bagel with butter. Absolutely insane spike - about 12.4 at its peak (up from about 5.3 baseline). Far higher than the spike I had with just toast yesterday morning. Confirming something I learnt on the app about glucose management being better earlier in the day. I’ll be interested to see if ACV helps with that when I retest later this week.

FinallyHere · 18/07/2022 19:59

@Flockameanie

envious of all of you who manage starches well.

You are in good company. Tim Spector himself mentions in lots of the pod casts that he doesn't tolerate starchy carbs well and envies those you can eat bread with impunity.

Wombat27A · 18/07/2022 22:11

I'm interested in what to do if you have both poor fat & sugar control as the examples are one or the other, so can mitigate.

And also how the food scores differ if you do have good control of one or the other or both...

OP posts:
chutneypig · 19/07/2022 06:38

I'm intrigued by that too @Wombat27A - and a little nervous I might provide the example!

I'm traveling next week so I'm hoping the results will be back when I return and in the meantime I'll keep going with diversity and eating foods in order. I did get the Glucose Goddess book last weekend and found the explanations on fructose and glucose very helpful.

I think my glucose responses seemed better in the evening @Flockameanie, everything but cheese seemed to cause a morning spike. I've definitely felt better during the day if I didn't have that spike so I've had a rethink and am trying Greek yogurt nuts and berries now.

BarryKentPoet · 19/07/2022 07:17

How long do kits take to be posted out? I feel like I've been waiting ages but not even a tracking number yet.

lugeforlife · 19/07/2022 08:20

@chutneypig i suspect me too

Do you have a date for your results yet? My
poo is the pending item now and should have them back in about 10 days just as I go on holiday.

I am sort of muddling through in this interim period. Done a bit more exercise, eaten much less crap and refined carbs and upped the veg. Protein based breakfast etc. finding it quite easy to not reach for sweet stuff although did have a scone and my mums home made jam on Sunday. But only one.

I tell you what, my bowels seem to be happier.

Flockameanie · 19/07/2022 08:21

Mine came quickly @BarryKentPoet. within a week I think

chutneypig · 19/07/2022 09:24

Mine came within a few days @BarryKentPoet but I didn't get any tracking info apart the first dispatch notice. I was surprised about that.

Mines saying the 5th @lugeforlife which is consistent as you're a day ahead of me. Mine switched yesterday to say the blood sugar responses have been analysed. They've had the poo samples for ages so I'm hoping it will be quicker

FinallyHere · 19/07/2022 09:27

I signed up for this programme more to validate the results of a change I made to my eating habits in January.

There have been no differences in blood sugar control, bowel habits etc but I am pleased that the results confirmed what I thought was happening to my blood sugar control in my new regime.

It's only very slightly different to the Zoe approach.

Only frustration is the apparent difference between the encouragement to avoid processed foods and what I find in the database, so many tescos ready meals while I struggle to find raw cabbage which is a staple of my way of eating.
