Zoe Nutrition Testing

Wombat27A · 15/06/2022 08:15

Not sure this is the right place for this...

Anyone else doing the Zoe Nutrition Testing?

My results were poor, so now I'm tackling my diet. I thought it was pretty good but it's clear it needs a major overhaul. So much information but finding it good.🙂

You can copy meals but it's awkward to amend them.

Just confirming that coaching doesn't start until you have your results. One of the tasks to be done once your results have arrived is to confirm the date for coaching to begin.

Wombat27A · 11/07/2022 19:23

Ah, I'd not understood that properly. Thanks. 👍

Sorry to change the subject but just want to clarify - a ‘spike’ is a jump of 1.7mmol or more - but is this immediately after eating, or 3 hours after eating? Ie if you’ve not recovered within 3 hours that’s a problem?

just had salad and a spinach and feta pie (didn’t eat much pastry) and a huge spike of 2.9mmol so wondering if that’s normal or bad!

ArrangeYourFace1 · 11/07/2022 20:06

@MassiveSalad22 i got big spikes like that frequently, it would go from 4/5 before breakfast to 7/8. But I don’t know if that’s normal as it turns out I don’t have good blood sugar control!

MassiveSalad22 · 11/07/2022 20:28

Straight after breakfast, or hours after? I’m down to 5.2 now 2 hours after dinner 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3.3-6.2-5.2. Ugh I’m not enjoying this blind clueless data-gathering phase 😄 going for a walk now so will probably go up again knowing me!

Wombat27A · 11/07/2022 22:30

I think I just regarded the spikes with wonder without being too enquiring. I think I was grateful it never went up 10.

I've never managed to find decent numbers for glucose levels when I was finger pricking. I might be talking to a dietician on Wednesday, I'll see if she has any resources.

Maybe we can suggest to them that they need more detail on this?

I've asked about sourdough. 👍

@Wombat27A & @MassiveSalad22 The Glucose Goddess explains glucose spikes really clearly on her Instagram account and in her book

Flockameanie · 12/07/2022 07:33

On her graphs, her spikes are within 2 hrs of food. As in, it’s gone up, spiked, and come down again within that 2hr period. If the spike causes a subsequent dip (below base level) that’s the reason for hunger pangs (and other symptoms like drowsiness or sluggishness) around 2hrs after you eat a spike-inducing meal.

for me the best example is porridge. When I used to eat that for breakfast, I’d always be hungry again 2hrs later.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/07/2022 08:08

Still not getting it really. That’s what insulin is for isnt it? So you have to give insulin a chance to lower the spike. Most foods will up your glucose? So when is it a problem? How quick does insulin work? I’ve followed GG for ages, maybe I’m just thick 😄

For some reason last night’s walk lowered my glucose rather than upping it which it usually does. So that’s even more confusing 😄

Flockameanie · 12/07/2022 08:12

spikes cause excess insulin = bad. Inflammation, etc. She explains it all really well. Better than I can here

MassiveSalad22 · 12/07/2022 08:13

So say before eating your level is 4.5. Spike up to 6. If you’re back to 4.5 within 2 hrs you’re fine? Or is the fact that you went up to 6 a problem?

This phase is doing nothing for my anxiety if you can’t tell 😄

Flockameanie · 12/07/2022 08:14

But yes, obvs eating will raise your glucose somewhat. The key is to make your glucose chart as flat as possible and avoid too many spikes (various ways to do that without meaning you have to cut out all the ‘fun’ stuff)

Flockameanie · 12/07/2022 08:28

@MassiveSalad22 as I understand it, if you exercise after eating it flattens the curve (because your muscles use the glucose, rather than it going into your blood). If you exercise on an empty stomach you will see a glucose spike or raise on your chart, but that isn’t a bad one. It’s just a function of your body generating the energy to move. Her book gives much more info on the details.

lugeforlife · 12/07/2022 08:40

@MassiveSalad22 if you aren't careful I'll give you a hug again.....

I am feeling a bit down in the dumps at the moment and sort of wish I hadn't started this because it's making me anxious. I DO NOT get on with carby breakfasts and haven't eaten them for years so have found the 4 day challenges really tough. I am finding my levels overall are higher across the day since I've been doing them. Yesterday I had spikes from fruit that I didn't have last week.

Seeing others be a bit upset/surprised by their results is making me anxious too. I am very much success driven (I work for carrot not stick) so if, as I suspect, I get a whole lot of 'bad' results there is a real risk
I'll find it too overwhelmingly negative and ignore it, this not helping my health and wasting a lot of money.

Meh. Not a good day

Flockameanie · 12/07/2022 09:18

Blimey - I am getting an insane spike from the breakfast muffins! I’ve shot up approx 3.0mmol/L in 20 mins and still going up…

Flockameanie · 12/07/2022 09:23

Sorry to hear you’re both having tough days today @lugeforlife and @MassiveSalad22 I can see how this whole process would be a bit triggering if you have anxiety issues around food.

I’m approaching it with a ‘knowledge is power’ attitude. I think with anything like this you can take on board as much as you like. So, even if I (likely) find out I have poor blood glucose management, I’m not going to give up chocolate and ice cream! It’ll be about figuring out how to eat that stuff in a way that better suits me. The Glucose Goddess info has been quite life-changing for me on that front. I was always a ‘calories in/calories out’ person, but I feel the scales have fallen from my eyes.

(and no - I’m not her nor anything to do with her! Although I’m aware it sounds like I’m shilling)

Wombat27A · 12/07/2022 10:04

I'm in the "knowledge is power" camp too.

I was a bit depressed by my results but it is what it is & I can't go around ignoring my basic biology.

I am heartened by chocolate & chips not being awful too. 😁😋

Without also sounding evangelical, I do actually feel an awful lot better physically. I've lost a lot of puffiness & even tho I'm up with my poorly dog most nights, I don't feel too tired.

I want to understand things better but I will also look after my mental health too. As ever, it's all a balance. 👍

There isn't a lot of emphasis on numbers in the report, it's what happens after that's important. Using your scores to craft better meal combinations, etc.

So my morning banana, which I like with my coffee changed to banana & peanut butter, then banana & almond butter. Occasionally, it's banana & chocolate spread. 😁

MassiveSalad22 · 12/07/2022 11:52

@Flockameanie I’m apparently the opposite then - my after dinner walks send my glucose up, fasted walk today was level/lower.

I asked Zoë chat and she said it’s normal to spike high (more than 1.7mmol) straight after eating and they only look at the readings 3 hours after eating. So I guess according to them it’s only a problem if you’re more than 1.7mmol higher than your start reading, 3 hours after eating.

Knoweldge is definitely power, that’s why I’m here! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

MassiveSalad22 · 12/07/2022 11:55

Oh no, sorry to hear that @lugeforlife ! 💐 I think as they course goes on it will get better and more empowering, this phase is stressful 😄

chutneypig · 12/07/2022 11:57

That's some good detail you got from the support team @massive salad.

I'm with you on not loving the carby breakfast @lugeforlife. I'm very puzzled by mine today - I went for a brisk walk after my bagel, had absolutely no impact on my blood sugar profile, looked exactly the same as the first day.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/07/2022 12:54

That’s so confusing @chutneypig . I’m perplexed.

I answered the little quiz thing today that my carb-only part of my challenge gave me a smaller spike than my carb-and-cheese day, and they’re like ‘that’s great! That’s because combining foods does something amazing etc etc’…. So not really a tailored response 😄 I had a 0.6mmol spike with bread+cheese, and a 0.3mmol spike with just bread. But the little post-challenge quiz thing doesn’t seem to have capacity for that.
