I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Well, i failed today! It was so wet and windy i dodn't go out jogging. Quite disapointed. There wasn't really any way i could jog in strong winds though.

Will go out Thursday instead.

Misdee · 15/01/2008 20:05

i havent been out since my failed atte,pt last week i will get a quick one in tomorrow before i go to the cinema with dh in the evening

Misdee you started this thread and now you're gibbing out on us!!! Get out there tomorrow!!

Thanks for the stitch tips Nutmeg. Just got back from my session but will try your tips next time. I run on the road so it might be that - I won't make the other runners laugh cause luckily I don't see anyone. I usually go when it's dark and pass the odd dog walker - although I did get beeped at tonight!

Week 2 session 2 tonight. My running is usually a bit of a limp jog so tonight I did alternate lamp posts running and limp jog! I found it a good way of ramping up the pressure without trying to do too much at once.

Good luck everyone! Keep it up.

Furball · 16/01/2008 09:50

Been out for week 1 run 3, feel great! It's so good having that MP3 chap telling you when to stop and start. Thank you Judgenutmeg for the link

Minum · 16/01/2008 10:23

Just come back from week 2 run 3 - went well, think I'll do one more run before going up to week 3.

I went to buy my new running shoes yesterday, to help with shin pains. Lovely shop with a running machine to check gait. Was completely mortified when cute shop assistant asked me to remove socks and roll up trousers - my unshaved legs which hadnt seen body lotion since Christmas - why didnt I think that one through. Anyway, new shoes are great, definately less pain this morning.

Aitch · 16/01/2008 10:32

okay haven't read all the thread but am slightly tempted... am concerned about 'equipment'. i have running shoes, at least they're adidas and designed originally for the NY marathon so that sounds like runners to me. i have no crop top - is it essetnial? chest used to be big pre-baby, is now a d cup.

Minum · 16/01/2008 13:22

The crop top is essential for me, also d cup, and sports bra still result in wobble. My crop top was from Primark last century (literally ) and still does the job.

wheelybug · 16/01/2008 16:54

Did week1 run 2 today. Again had to do it 40 mins before I had to leave to pick up dd but didn't let myself use that as an excuse.

Could do with some music to listen to though ....

will have to do run 3 tomorrow but have more time to fit it in.

Aitch · 16/01/2008 18:07

ahem. okay. crop top from preeeeeemark. should i also buy an ipod shuffle? these podcasts sound good but i was kinda thinking more like Just A Minute and the archers on r4. is that not speedy enough?

ivykaty44 · 16/01/2008 18:11

Come on Misdee - you got us motivated you can't back out now. Even if you walk more than you run it doesn't matter.

Furball · 16/01/2008 18:43

I got a 'zen stone' mp3 player Aitch 20 quid from Amazon

pinkspottywellies · 16/01/2008 19:16

Welcome to the house of pain Aitch! I use the podcast and although I'm not mad keen on Robert's choice of music he does motivate you and keep you on track with the interval training. I am so not a runner so I couldn't have done it without! But if you prefer the Archers then see how you get on!

pinkspottywellies · 16/01/2008 19:18

By the way I think (I haven't got one) that with the iPod shuffle you can't pick what you listen to so you would have to just put the podcast for that week on and remove all your other stuff or maybe just keep skipping through till you find it? Anyone else know?

tortoise · 16/01/2008 20:32

I can't get the podcasts onto my phone! I don't know what i am doing wrong!

Hopefully the weather isn't too bad tomorrow so i get out for my jog.

wheelybug · 16/01/2008 20:38

tortoise I did a search on this (as actually I have a new phone and didn't know how to get anything onto it) and apparently the podcast is for itunes which is MP4 and phones are MP3 and therefore not compatible (far too techy for me but makes some sort of sense I think). Am going to have to nick DH's ipod but its a biggy so a pain to run with.

Aitch · 16/01/2008 20:39

ah now though, moving parts in an ipod so you knacker them if you run with them, apparently.

JudgeNutmeg · 16/01/2008 20:48

I think, but I'm not certain, that with the shuffle there are some little icons at the bottom of the screen to the left that gives a shuffle option or a play-in-order option. You should be able to load a playlist and have it play in the order that you list it.

Sorry to be vague, 11yo shuffle expert has gone to bed!

With hindsight, this was a stupidly wet time of year to start this running malarky!

My heartrate chest band sits neatly below the bottom of my bra, I don't leave a gap and it works fine. I just try not to dwell on how fast my heart is going at the moment....I'm sure it will get slower soon.

tortoise · 16/01/2008 21:16

Ah i see.Thanks wheely.

wheelybug · 16/01/2008 22:11

Judgenutmeg is right - I have been researching Ipod shuffles with the idea of comvincing dh to buy me one and you can choose whether to shuffle or not.

You can also get one of those armbandy thingies which might help with the movement issue.

pinkspottywellies · 16/01/2008 22:17

Oh dear. I just have my iPod in my pocket. Didn't know I was knackering it!

Aitch · 16/01/2008 22:36

i suppose if you jog really slowly...

Misdee · 16/01/2008 22:45

i stuff mine in my bra but i may get a shuffle just for running with.

i promise i will be back out there tomorrow. if i dont then all give me a virtual boot up the arse.

Aitch · 16/01/2008 22:59

misdee what do you doooooo? i don't understand running, but i was telling my friend that i was considering taking it up and she said that it'd be a nightmare on my own.

Misdee · 16/01/2008 23:18

what do i do? i am still on week 1 podcast, or you can follow it here using a stop watch i dont mind doing it on my own for now, but do want to train with people as i get fitter and faster lol. i am also on a mini challenge this week at my slimming group between 4 of us to see who can get to the next stone/half stone award quickest. we all between 1-2lb away, so not mucg but need to stay focussed.

Went out this morning - not due to, but drank a bottle of wine last night, so felt I should do a penance. Am really aching now, so will give myself 48 hours off. Will start week 3 on Saturday, bit that I will be able to do 3 minute jog - its looks so easy when written down, doesn't it.
