I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Can I join you please? Did my first one this morning (in the drizzle) thought I was fitter than I actually obviously am! Will perservere though.

Minum · 17/01/2008 13:06

Welcome Mrspink - well done on doing your first run, this weather is a bit of a pain, isnt it

mrspink27 · 17/01/2008 14:56

Just wondering whether hiring a treadmill is the way to go...

wheelybug · 17/01/2008 16:04

yeah ! i completed week 1 today in the rain. Am so chuffed with myself. Also tried to buy an ipod shuffle in tesco but all sold out.

JudgeNutmeg · 17/01/2008 16:34

Mrs Pink, we had a good chat about treadmills further up the thread. Lots of people are asking for treadmills and exercise bikes etc on my freecycle list at the moment. Loads of people must have them languishing in their spare rooms and garages.

I hope this bloody rain stops sometime before autumn.

Misdee · 17/01/2008 18:26

i have just finished my 3rd run of week three. and it did get easier! i took it at a slower pace than previous ones, but still feel really good about it.

one thing though, i can feel my dodgey ankle is grumbling a bit about it. this is the ankle which always gave way, and the doc told me not to go dancing as i have stretched the ligaments beyond normality and they just dont support at all. so i need an ankle strap of some sort. can anyone find me one?

I have just completed an application to do the Great North Run in october, in memory of Vio's little boy Jimjim who died last year.

I havent run since school and am currently 3 stone overweight.... Eeeek!!!

tortoise · 17/01/2008 20:27

I didn't get to go out again today. I had both DD's home with bad colds.
I don't know if i should go out tomorrow with DD2 in the 3heel buggy and hope i can manage that way or start again Tuesday. Really want to get out there and get on with it!

pinkspottywellies · 18/01/2008 09:14

Welcome new people and good luck. I did session 3 of week 2 yesterday and it was hard. I think I'm going to do one more of week 2 then onto week 3 next week. It might have been harder cause it was really windy and raining.

Misdee · 18/01/2008 09:54

Oh Geordie - well done you, I am really impressed.

I messed up my run this morn on the treadmill again and managed 15 mins and then stopped. I did though so a spin class as wanted to get the miles in on a bike - lots of 80's music in the spin class so really enjoyed it!

I do find the music makes a difference to the run/ride and can make you "go" faster or further!!

geordiemacminx · 18/01/2008 15:59

Thanks Ivy;

I have been and purchased new headphones and batteries for mymp3 player, I know what you mean about music. Going out for half an hour run in the rain listening to some good music will actually be quite relaxing for me. Its nice to have some "me" time, being full time mum to ds who is 8 months!

Does everyone else run every other day?

Minum · 18/01/2008 16:13

I'm averaging about 4 times a week, which works at the moment, as I'm not at work, and the boys are at school.

I think the music is the best bit about this running game

ivykaty44 · 18/01/2008 18:10

I have been going through my music collection - which is really nice cos I am finding cd's I had complety forgotten I had. I have a varied mix to say the least from sporting anthems to cris rea cher and lots of best of the 60's best of the 70's.

Still waiting for my mp3 player to arrive - it has been despatched though like a small child waiting for toy moment

tortoise · 18/01/2008 19:56

I have my DD's cold now so didn't get out again today. Feeling a failure this week.
Hope to start again with wk 2 on Tuesday.

Minum · 19/01/2008 10:25

You're not a failure, you cant run when you're ill - good luck for Tuesday

I've just done week 3 run 1 - its a definate step up, but I did it . The week 3 MP3 DH made is fab, especially the walking home tune ! Good luck everyone runnning this weekend.

Misdee · 19/01/2008 13:09

i went out at 8am this morning for week 2 race 1. reaaly enjoyed it, weather was just right as quite blowy so kept me cool.

JudgeNutmeg · 19/01/2008 19:21

Hello runners!

I have just had a lovely time at the gym this afternoon. A v.nice friend had my kids for me so I could relax and not rush through it. The gym at the weekend is a much more vibrant and exciting place....loads of really young women and men who all looked amazing. I just tried to blend in.

I was a bit surprised to find a leg in the changing room....I can only surmise that someone in the gym at the same time as me had a special 'gym-leg' on. You certainly couldn't tell by looking.

Anyway, onwards and upwards.

sparklygothkat · 19/01/2008 21:51

yep, did my first run today, managed it ok, the last part was hard, but did it

ivykaty44 · 20/01/2008 12:12

Mud Mud and more mud

Went out this morn early for a run and managed just over 2 miles. Then me and dd2 went for a bike ride up the canal - there is a cafe at the top of a long long flight of locks. After all the rain the tow path was muddy - we got covered, which was great fun,.

Coming home we got covered coming through the puddles again and then I had a puncture, so ran the last mile and a half home, after cycling 10 miles!! We both had to have showers and both clean now.

dd2 thought it was just such great fun getting covered in mud (must admit it brings out the child in me

So have done enough for today.

Oh and my mp3 player arrived yesterday morning so took that with me for my run first thing - its great and the sound is really good aswell, only 15 quid - a bargin

milkymill · 20/01/2008 16:15

Hello, can I join too? I will be following the couch potato to 5k tonight hopefully. Haven't done any sort of running since school and am asthmatic, but this looks slightly manageable .

I'm really looking forward to getting fit and losing a bit of weight in the process .

Madlentileater · 20/01/2008 16:15

hi everyone- we did first week 3 run today- I had been worried it would be impossible, but was OK
am getting sore knees though, esp right one- am trying a support bandage and have been advised to do trainers up TIGHT. any ideas?

pinkspottywellies · 20/01/2008 18:53

I went to stay with my sister for the weekend and dragged her out with me! She thought she'd be really unfit but she managed week 2 with me! I did a forth on week 2 because I found my third one really hard! 4 was fine though and I sped up quite a bit on the last 2 runs so I feel ready for week 3. Feel more confident now I've seen some of you guys have started week 3 ok! Keep running everyone - we're doing so well!
