I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

I'd love to join you!! I've been meaning to do something like this for ages, a friend of mine runs regularly now and she has been egging me on. DS4 satrts preschool tomorrow so I have no excuse not to use some of the freetime.

tortoise · 08/01/2008 12:54

judgenutmeg- I haven't but will look out for one. Good idea!

squatchette · 08/01/2008 12:57

Would really like to join in though not sure how able i am.Used to love running but haven't done any really for about 6 yrs or been to the gym in as long.
We have one of those York multi gyms in our middle bed room which i am also hoping to start using .We got it last summer and i haven't even been on it yet.
Doesn't help that i'm also a smoker so this needs to stop too.I quite like the look of those dance workouts that are being advertised on the tv alot at the mo too. Will check out the links later that a few of you have mentioned and try and get some sort of plan together.
Thanks for the inspiration everyone and here's to a healthy 2008 !

tortoise · 08/01/2008 13:05

Hi squatchette
i think you should be able to do it. Especially as you have previously ran. I have never been much of a runner!
Good luck.

TheRedQueen · 08/01/2008 13:24

I'd love to join you too! Try as I might to ignore the extra 5+kg I have been carrying around (mainly on my thighs and bum!) since having DD two or so years ago, it's time to accept that it's just not going to melt away of its own accord (plus, DH has just booked us a fab summer holiday in Turkey and I don't want to look like a beached whale).

I am going to go for the Runners' World "Get Started" Programme.

I confess up front that I am not an absolute newcomer, having previously done lots of 10k running (some of it quite fast even - ah! those were the days!). However, I have now not run or done virtually any exercise for over three years so I think I count as a beginner - and I certainly find the Runsnetters thread too scary to join just at the moment!

Misdee · 08/01/2008 17:18

i am off out for my first training session i na bit. dropping dd1 at brownies at the end of the road and am going to make my way back.

Good luck Misdee.

Misdee · 08/01/2008 18:08

oh my goodness, i am battered. that was hard work. by the 5th 60second run i was really feeling it, and wanted to stop (remember 6stone overweight, big norks, last exercised when i was born and screamed as iwas born ), but carried on and i feel so so good about actually doing it. that podcast is very good, and saved me having to look at a watch all the time.

so next run for me is on thursday. will be in the evening again but probably after the kids are in bed. cant wait!!

Misdee · 08/01/2008 18:11

Well done Misdee. The last few jogging bits were a struggle for me too! But we both did great to carry on.

I will be doing it again Thursday morning when DD2 is at ore-school again. Can't do evenings.

Misdee · 08/01/2008 18:14

i wont go out in the daytime, i might frighten the old ladies. i have been running round the bunglow blocks, off from the main road.

tortoise · 08/01/2008 18:18

lol! I did worry about people seeing me at 1st but was ok after a while. Lots of cars/lorries pasted me!

JudgeNutmeg · 08/01/2008 18:45

Good to hear you survived your first run Misdee! It will feel so much better over the next few runs.

I'm so glad you started this thread, it's very motivational.

armyofme · 08/01/2008 18:48

well done! that's pretty impressive going out in the cold and dark i'm planning my first run/walk tomorrow morning, but it'll have to be before 8am when dp goes to work argh...

Furball · 08/01/2008 19:02

Right! - I've got me new mp3 player today and have downloaded the podcast ready and will go after dropping ds off at school. Hoping the podcast will really push me. I ran a few years ago but stopped when i felt puffed and started when I didn't which was all abit woolly

JudgeNutmeg · 08/01/2008 20:05

Just discovered that my ds dreaded cross country is in nine weeks....looks like he will be in fine form by then. Bless him, he had most of a lung removed when he was tiny and has asthma to deal with. This training plan really started at exactly the right time for him.

He just said to me 'I know I'll be able to finish this year!' He is such a sweetie, he never ever gets picked for teams and has 2 left feet but he never moans. You don't hear enough about lovely, kind bookish boys do you.

tortoise · 08/01/2008 20:11

aww thtas so sweet Judge. I hope he does well.

callmemadam · 08/01/2008 22:32

callmemadam · 08/01/2008 22:48

Thanks Misdee

Furball · 09/01/2008 09:37

Woohoo! - I'm Back and not too out of puff. Feeling very pleased with myself - even if I do resemble a ripe tomato ! My cheeks are like this

bramblebooks · 09/01/2008 10:40

Phew! just in from 1st day of week 5 - I've chosen to 'restart' from there, having got up to 5k last year using this programme. Thanks for the podcast info, was very helpful.

Minum · 09/01/2008 13:26

Didnt go running this morning, but cycled to and from my meeting, about 5miles in all - actually found it a bit harder than the running, maybe because I had to watch the traffic, instead of the lovely trees in the park. But glad I did it, as its worked totally different leg muscles.

Plan to cycle the route of the 10km fun run I want to enter, just so I can get a feel of what I need to build up to in my running.

Misdee · 09/01/2008 18:39

well done minum.

i feel a bit achey today, can reallyu feel it in my legs.

am getting all geared up for tomorrows run now. cant wait
