I know there is a mumsnet runners thread but I am a total beginner, and feel a bit overawed on there as they all seem really experienced.

I am going to be following this training programme, running 3x a week, starting next week once my children are back at school. I say running, but in reality i will be starting with a brisk walk, then picking up the pace over the next couple of months.

I have registered interest in Race For life, which is may/june, and will be taking part in the harefield fun run.

Anyone want to join me

Just been for my third run, so I've finished week one! It's pouring with rain but I didn't think it was too bad. I'm quite scared about starting week 2 though. I hope I can keep up. But I thought that at the beginning of this week - I said to dh 'it's meant to be half an hour but I don't know if I'll manage it' and I did, so hopefully I'll be ready for week 2. Just hope the weather perks up!

Misdee · 11/01/2008 20:10

i am finding it really hard to have a bak in between each session, but i know if i go out everyday it will be too much too soon and i'll pack it in. so if i start saying i'm running everyday, then give me a virtual slap.

You could always do something else on the in between days Misdee. I try and do a yoga dvd.

tortoise · 11/01/2008 20:22

I will be going out for my run tomorrow. I was thinking of re-doing wk one but might try wk two tomorrow to see how i do. I hope the weather is better tomorrow.
Misdee-I was planning on doing an exercise dvd on the days inbetween running. Haven't managed it yet though!

Misdee · 12/01/2008 10:39

its my last run of week one today. am really worried in case i cant manage week 2, but will give that a go monday evening, if its too much then i will go back a step.

mind you i thought week 1 would be impossiable as well. it is hard work but not impossable.

I did about 2.5 miles last night and then did sprints and walks between lamp posts for the last half mile home. Started NY day.

That is apparently the quickest way to build up your stamina, a bit like the 60 second run, 60 second walk - but it's really difficult to time it accurately don't you think?

Misdee · 12/01/2008 11:49

i am using the podcast monkey, so its all timed for you. its like having a personal trainer alongside you lol.

Did same 2k run again yesterday - ran the lot. Am pleased with self.

Have decided that my aim is to build up to 8k p/wk - either 2 x 4k or one big one in a week. I'll be pretty fit if I get there.

Thanks for tip of crop top over sports bra. Makes me an odd shape but stops the bounce!

And at Misdee's having to stop herself running every day.I have to force myself 2 x p/wk!

Misdee · 12/01/2008 11:58

lol slpuchy, i am very over eager as want results quickly. but know not to push it. as i am really really unfit. my 'run' is litterally a slow jog. i had an old lady watching me from her kictehcn as i ran round the little block of bunglows 8 times the other night. bet she thinks i am mad.

Went last night to the gym and had the annoying Paula Radcliffe tell me 'Congratulations that was your longest run yet!' - Arrrgggghhhhh piss off woman - would rather have a fat couch potato egg me along than someone who is stick thin and can run to Peru and back!

Quite happy with myself though and have got the running bug back in the system - up to 5k and next goal is 8k so I can say I can run 5 miles!

Would love to do an outside event but I find running outside sooo much harder - apparently it burns 10% more calories than rnning in a gym!

Good Luck to you all and keep up the good work - we could have a mumsnet 10k one day for a charity close to all of our hearts!

tortoise · 12/01/2008 12:11

session 1 wk 2! That was hard work. I am shattered lol! I did manage ok though so i will try the same again Tuesday.
I want to get a stop watch now. I took the kitchen timer and timed it that way this time. It did help and i didn't have to think about counting!

Few minutes rest then i need to walk to town for some shopping!

JudgeNutmeg · 12/01/2008 13:09

Well done Tortoise! I'll be right behind you starting week two on Tuesday. I am feeling extremely pleased with all of us.

Misdee, you could always do some weights-work at home inbetween running days. There are some fab/funny home exercise vids on youtube that show people using household stuff. Just be careful what you watch in front of the kids!

This sort of thing looks ok.

I'm going tomorrow and am up to the bit where you run 20 mins without stopping - we'll see! - I love it when the endorphins kick in, you can see why people want to run every day!

I've registered for the June 10k - argh!

pinkspottywellies · 12/01/2008 19:18

Misdee and Nutmeg I start week 2 tomorrow too so I'll let you know how I get on! Is it much much harder tortoise? I'm not convinced I'll manage!

tortoise · 12/01/2008 19:22

PSW- I didn't find it much harder but it was a bit harder. I was surprised how well i managed actually. I think the 2 min walk in between jogs really helped too.
Good luck with it.

Misdee · 12/01/2008 20:47

I've just done my first run in my life ever! I went out with DH who used to run half marathons but has got rather unfit on kebabs like me. We did 11 mins of running a lampost then walking a lampost. I have to say that I enjoyed it much more than I expected and it's nice having my own personal trainer in the form of my beloved. I'm taking it really really slowly as I am beyond unfit but am really proud of what I did tonight. Just hoping I don't ache too much in the morning...

tortoise · 12/01/2008 21:16

Misdee- A but is better than nothing.

Jenkeywoo Well done . How nice to have someone to jog with.

pinkspottywellies · 12/01/2008 21:22

Well done Jenkeywoo! It feels great when you achieve something like that doesn't it! I was grinning like a loon when I finished my first session

I have done the 5 mins walk warm up and cool down from the couch to 5k programme and haven't ached at all the next day.

mammyjo · 12/01/2008 21:36

Ok, hi everyone. I have joined weight watchers this week as I am many stones overweight. Have been thinking about some sort of exercise regime and I wonder if I have found it here! Can I join please? I know you have all started, but can I just be a late starter?

MrsCarrot · 12/01/2008 21:37

I am going to start Monday.

That sounds like a procrastination but I am.

Misdee · 12/01/2008 21:40
