For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

Now you see I think the last one on your list is quite key, for general well-being that is.

Hmm.

Do you need job security? Really? You're right about the money for few hours, but then is there a great virtue in doing a job you don't like for money that isn't essential?

Only thing is to listen carefully to yourself. I think when you've been on mat leave or out of work for a while, then sometimes the voice that tells you not to go back isn't always the sanest one. Sometimes it is, sometimes it's lack of confidence speaking too though.

You're right - a lot of people would love to have the choice of whether to work or not. But when you do have the choice, it is a tough one. Don't be so hard on yourself.

ahundredtimes · 04/01/2008 00:15

Yes, but working freelance is sensible I think Avi. Can you work in some freelance capacity for your company? Allowing you to come back in if you need to?

OverRated · 04/01/2008 00:16

Well, there is 'being sensible' and there is being happy...

Just looked at your profile, Avi - what lovely pictures. You don't look 47.

ahundredtimes · 04/01/2008 00:19

Right. Resign then, and carry on working freelance. Go for it. Sounds like the best thing. And all your experience will carry on in the freelance capacity, and if things get hairy then you can always go back and work for a company.

There are always 'what ifs' but it doesn't sound like you are not being sensible.

OverRated · 04/01/2008 00:19

I have to go too but good luck avi - hope you get some sleep. Night night you two.

ahundredtimes · 04/01/2008 00:19

Right. That's that then. Christ look at the time. How is Chicago?

I must go to bed OR.

OverRated · 04/01/2008 00:20

I agree with ahundredtimes btw

OverRated · 04/01/2008 00:21

Chicago is cold. Very cold. Windchill was -22c yesterday

Night night

Grouchyoscar · 04/01/2008 03:33

Hi there Overated

I spent the best 5 days of my life in Chicago just over 5 years ago. It was a complete blast. We went to some great museums, galleries, the Unis, Fantastic music venues, caught up with friends; It was the best money I ever spent.

DH really wanted to up sticks and relocate us there from Yorkshire. Good job we didn't...He got me pregnant with DS, I have MS and we have no health insurance, Ho Hum.

We will go back one day and show DS his 'history' Heh heh

But yep it's blinking cold!

FrannyandZooey · 04/01/2008 08:00

Morning

sorry about this dilemma Avi, not a nice one

I don't really get what you don't like about the regular job, that you do like about the freelance one - it's essentially the same work, isn't it? Is it just the thing of having the set hours and the commitment and the inflexibility of it? If that drags you down and you can get away without it, then I would stay freelance. Seems a shame, to have that toad sitting on your life, if you don't have to, whether you are 47 or whatever

Wombling the al-anon thing is for the families of alcoholics so it would be dp who would be getting the help, to do with his mother, yes. Him admitting he might need help dealing with something emotional is akin to a normal person saying their head is falling off so I am a bit concerned. he is trying to read over my shoulder without appearing as if he is doing so so i will get off mn

oh I wanted to ask avi does it make a big difference then if you wanted to go back to the regular job after a few years of freelance? are there that many people on your island doing what you do? [dubious]

oh my internet ran away last night and I missed to avi job dilemma.

I am going against the grain here because I really think the colleague thing is important - but then I am that kind of person and given that you live on an island and all that maybe there is strong community etc and you will have the social not around children thing from another source.

I had ds when I lived in london and after maternity leave I went back for a bit and then took the leap and went freelance. I enjoyed the flexiblity of freelance and it meant I could spent more time with ds and manage my own time (but that is not an issue with you it seems) and I used it as a way to grow a bit and try new things BUT I missed the day to day 'let's go for a coffee' 'did you see the news' 'what nice shoes' more than I could of imagined.

So tread carefully my dear because you tread on my dreams - no no no that is not what I mean but we need to talk about this more and more and more.

Franny - good for dp - that kind of thing is hard for some blokes to do and -yeah - my dp is the same in that regard and when he sought help for something once I was staggeringly impressed with him.

OR - tell us about exotic overseas stuff

BBBee · 04/01/2008 10:11

boco i want you to come on here and talk about your hol;iday and how you are going to put the children to bed and then put on mascara and open expensive wine and talk to your friend about all kinds of stuff and she will be fun and you will laugh loads until you cry and then you will make lots of tapas type food for your evening chats.

that is what you have to do.

filthymindedvixen · 04/01/2008 10:17

bbeee - what you said....

BBBee · 04/01/2008 10:22

what filthy said...

Boco · 04/01/2008 10:25

Oh YES that is what I want to do! All of that.

It's 22 degrees there atm, so not hot but nice and warm. I'm applying summer glow body lotion, to take off the blue tinge and add a little orange.

Friend is an amazing cook - I've been camping with her and she did wonderful things on a camping stove, so I have high hopes.

TooTicky · 04/01/2008 10:36

I am now bursting with curiosity to know what Avi does.
Tricky one Avi. For me, lots of money for few hours would be ideal, but if you don't need it, and have an alternative, and the thought of it makes you miserable, then let it go. It is a huge relief to let things go sometimes.

At the other end of the scale, I am going to deliver the papers around the village this morning. I get quite self-conscious about doing such "unskilled" jobs, but that's silly, isn't it?

I am drinking Heartwarming tea and trying to work out what is in it. Definitely ginger, sage and licorice, not sure what else.

Oh, Julian Graves are selling all their stock at half price. They have some very addictive fair trade dried mango and pineapple. Also, fruit juice-sweetened cherries and blueberries...mmmmmmmm.

BBBee · 04/01/2008 10:38

are you going to eat lavish supperst aht she prepares whilst you bed down dds?

oh boco it is going to be so lovely. You must maximise the friend time and enjoy yourself and take intricate colouring books for dds to do whilst you sit in a cafe sipping coffee and staring into space.

TooTicky · 04/01/2008 10:40

Cafes are boring. Play on the neach!
