What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect

BlessthisMess - yes I'm hopeful of doing the LHM race. I wanted to do the 10k and probably still will but the second half will be run/walk. I'm plagued by nosebleeds at the moment - not massive ones but it's very inconvenient. Everytime I plan a longer run - like on Saturday - I get a nosebleed part way round and have to walk a bit!

I've not signed up for the race yet though. I can do it on the day, can't I?

Babydriver - well done!

Ooh, I've no idea about signing up on the day. I do have to phone them though to find out what time the run starts (none of the paperwork says!!!) so I will try and remember to ask for you tomorrow.

HarrogateMum · 30/09/2008 10:04

hi all - I have been rubbish and only been out a couple of time since my 10k two weeks ago......and they were both really short runs. Need to get my motivation back as I'm doing a charity 10k at the end of November but its so hard when it gets dark just after I get back from work and its only going to get worse! Any hints anyone!

BlessThisMess · 30/09/2008 12:32

Saggarmakers - yes the 12th October 5K run (at www.lhm.org.uk if anyone else is interested) will accept entries on the day if there are any places left. You can phone to check how numbers are going on 0121 455 8982.

From my own point of view, if anyone is thinking of running in it, please try and get as much sponsorship as possible. I am running in memory of my first baby, Benjamin, who died aged 8 weeks from Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Little Hearts Matter needs all the money it can get to support children with only half a heart, and their families.

maviscrewit · 30/09/2008 13:47

Hi harrogate mum. I hate going out when its dark too. All day when its light I am desperate to go and then when the kids are in bed and its dark it gets hard to go out. My tip is to get in your running gear - then you feel like to you have to go. Also try running with someone then its hard to let them down. Am dreading the clocks changing!

sfxmum · 30/09/2008 13:54

hello all

lovely to see so much enthusiasm and race plans.
am trying to keep motivated am making it through winter without adding an extra layer of lard, so much harder to get out when it is dark in the morning

asics girl just got a base layer long sleeve T and a beanie, have gloves and a fleece already as well as waterproof, could do with new bottoms but will probably just leave it for Christmas list

aiming for 4X a week weekend and wed&thu when dd is at pre school or mummy jogtime as it seems to be known around here

sfxmum · 30/09/2008 13:56

blessthismess seems like a great cause, sorry for your loss

for personal reasons I am fond of Winston's wish they do fab work with bereaved children

HarrogateMum · 30/09/2008 14:01

maviscrewit - I have a running partner but for various reasons one or other of us often has some reason why we cant go and then its so hard to motivate myself to go out on my own! I am fine at weekends becuase we are up so early with kids that I just go at 7.30am and its dead quiet and light. But evenings during the week much harder!

sfxmum · 30/09/2008 14:08

the thing is for most runners stepping out is the hard bit once out you know you like it
but that part of actually shuffling out is hard work best go on auto pilot

babydriver · 09/10/2008 22:05

Hello. Anybody out there? It's getting dark and cold so we need all the support we can get!! I've only made it out once since my 10K, but hoping to go out tomorrow and make Friday morning a regular slot. DH doesn't work on Fridays so I can get up, grab a banana and run for half an hour and still get back for a quick shower before work and end up in the office only a bit later than usual. I don't much like running first thing in the morning, but at least it's light and I'd rather that than nothing at all.

Hope all goes well for those running 10K this weekend.

SparklyPrincess · 10/10/2008 17:16

The dark and cold is such a spanner in the works, isn't it? And its actually still quite light and warm ...

Really must go running ... have booked myself in for this evening and currently trying to convince myself its a good idea. I think I'd go if I could go at about 4-ish but I have to wait for babysitter dh to get home from work!

Really wish I could go during the day! Still, only 18 months til DC2 goes to pre-school...

OrmIrian · 10/10/2008 17:26

Hello! My cast is off at last. But have been told that I shouldn't run on it just yet. Will take it easy for a week or so but might give it go after that - just a short slow run. Can't wait

I don't mind the dark evenings. In fact I prefer it in some ways - fewer people around to see me. I'm going back to full-time work next week so it will be harder to fit in it but I'm going to manage it if it kills me!!

Wallace · 15/10/2008 07:32

Hello, how did everyone do at the weekend?

OrmIrian - Hooray

I did a v small local 3k at the weekend and won my catagory (senior women) in a time of 15.30

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/10/2008 11:10

I didn't do my run I have ishoos with my nose - it keeps bleeding and is driving me nuts.

I know you're frustrated too Orm but take you're time - don't rush into it and then regret it.

OP posts:
BlessThisMess · 15/10/2008 13:49

I did my first 5k - but nobody told me there was a mountain in the middle of the course!

So I did a total time of 37 mins, ran approx the first 15 and the last 15 mins but there was no way I could run up that hill - I felt faint just walking it!

Sorry you couldn't make it Saggarmakers - do you think you should go to the doc and see what's going on?

So I'm just off for my first run since the 5k. As I have only once ever managed to run more than 15 mins at a time, and that was with a friend, not on my own, today's goal is to do 20 mins non-stop!

HarrogateMum · 15/10/2008 13:55

How do any of you motivate yourself to go out in the dark? When I get home from work it is 6pm and dark at 6.15......meaning I can only go at the weekends now - not good when I have another 10k in a month!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 15/10/2008 16:13

BlessthisMess - well done on your race. I was gutted I couldn't come as it was good weather too. I should have said before, I'm so sorry about Benjamin. My dd has congenital heart disease and we are very lucky that she survived as she was late diagnosed and very sick for quite some time.

Good luck with doing 20 today

I have been to the docs about my nose - waiting on some blood results and have a steroid spray which will help

Harrogatemum - I don't have a problem getting out in the evening however I do find that I struggle to actually do much. A run I do easily in a orning feels like a marathon in the evening.

ThemasterandmarGOREitas · 15/10/2008 20:13

Hi, can I join you? I am to run a 10km in about 10 days and have been doing about 4kms a day for the last couple of weeks, I am running at altitude and over hill and dale. It's getting easier but I keep getting a stitch, any tips to avoid that?

Wallace · 15/10/2008 21:24

Well done Bless

Meant to say my dd also did the 3k. She did it in 20 mins... She's 7!

BlessThisMess · 15/10/2008 23:32

Wallace - good luck on Sun! Half-marathon is not something I can ever see me attempting.

Thanks Saggarmakers - I did 27 mins in the end! Was v. pleased with myself. New music on the MP3 player helped a lot and I found that Queen's "Fat-Bottomed Girls" is the perfect tempo for my running pace, LOL!!

Wallace · 16/10/2008 07:27

Thanks You might surprise yourself - I only started running 17 months ago... and I was all set to do a half marathon this time last year until I sprained my ankle! I don't gofast at ll, I just plod along

Well done on the 27 mins btw - music really helps. For my long runs I listen to some Simon and Garfunkel

sfxmum · 17/10/2008 16:02

hello all well done on races[smiles]

am too chicken to enter even a 5k but am thinking of joining a running club
have been going 4x a week most weeks but only doing 3miles give or take could do with a push

sfxmum · 17/10/2008 16:02

SmileSmile

Wallace · 18/10/2008 08:19

Do join a running club sfx! I go to one and it is fantastic. I started going to the beginners' session in April and in the summer braved the normal session. It wasn't full of scarily fit people and it gives a fantastic variation of training

sfxmum · 18/10/2008 11:35

wallace I think it is the training I need I find that left to my own devices I don't really push much beyond the comfort zone

also been running without music due to death or ipod (RIP in the big apple in the sky)
not good! I need my playlists to push me along
shiny new one on the way soon
