What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect

I don't know asics. Off to the fracture clinic next week so might find out more then.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 05/09/2008 20:40

You're not having much luck are you Orm?

Have been to the gym but I have done very little running this week. The weather has been crap hasn't it?

babydriver · 05/09/2008 22:37

Sorry to hear about your foot OrmIrian, must be driving you nuts.

Thanks for thoughts about jackets. No thoughts to offer about trousers I'm afraid asicsgirl - I've just got some ancient ronhills and some skanky old sub4s that I used to row in years ago!!

Managed to get out today before the rain set in. Looks pretty rubbish for the weekend too. ho hum.

asicsgirl · 07/09/2008 14:35

i love running in the rain!! is it just me? i seem to have loads more energy. something great about being out in a downpour too, when 'normal' people are busy taking cover...

good luck for clinic next week orm

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/09/2008 15:03

I don't mind rain generally but it's been so torrential here you risk being washed away.

I did get out this morning but my planned 40 minutes was interrupted by me getting a whopping great nosebleed . Thankfully my running mate comes well equipped with tissues. Otherwise I've only made it to the gym twice (and I don't run at the gym lol)

OP posts:
asicsgirl · 07/09/2008 16:00

at nosebleed saggar!

no i don't run at the gym either - 5 mins on a treadmill feels like half an hour outside!

OrmIrian · 07/09/2008 19:19

Not just you asics. I love it too. Even heavy rain. Don't like running through deep puddles though. Strong wind is my bugbear.

But all that is academic atm

asicsgirl · 07/09/2008 19:56

i like the wind too, give me a good head wind to get my teeth into. i know, call me weird...

orm, maybe you can visualise going for great runs where you overcome all obstacles effortlessly. then when the cast comes off you will find yourself transformed into WonderRunner by the power of mind alone! who knows, the olympians are always banging on about visualisation. worth a go!

wombleprincess · 07/09/2008 20:02

34 weeks and have stopped because it just felt too uncomfortable, but hoping to get back to it to do a half marathon for march.. probably a pipe dream....

sfxmum · 07/09/2008 20:05

WP you are an inspiration to me

Omirian sorry about your leg

do any of you rain runners wear glasses? it is my annoyance really otherwise don't mind the rain much

asicsgirl · 07/09/2008 20:15

blimey wp you are doing well! congrats too

sfx - no glasses here. do wear baseball cap, keeps rain off face admirably, does that not work with glasses? [dim emoticon]

sfxmum · 07/09/2008 20:20

it sort of does but not always, also I find I have to pin the cap firmly down maybe I have a big head

MrsWednesday · 07/09/2008 21:14

Hello, can I join you? I'm a slow plodder of a runner, gradually trying to get slightly better.

Did my first ever half marathon today and I'm suffering from severe 'under bra chaffing' that has taken a layer of skin off. Has anyone else had this and got any advice on sports bras etc?

wombleprincess · 08/09/2008 07:03

sfx, asicsgirl... like i said.. could just be a pipedream!

OrmIrian · 08/09/2008 09:57

sfx - I used to but no I have daily contacts. Glasses were a total pita!

asicsgirl · 08/09/2008 10:53

mrswednesday, well done on your first half! a distance i can still only dream of, lol. not much advice on sports bras except i have just bought 2 freya ones (having increased norkage atm due to bf, so none of my crop tops fit any more) and i have to say they are absolutely brilliant. got them from a lingerie shop where i got properly measured, so they fit really well, are v supportive and don't move at all.

ThePenguinProject · 08/09/2008 11:10

Hello - Complete running virgin here, going for my first walk/run tomorrow morning.

DS now 11 weeks and I desperately need some me time and to lose the left over baby weight. Hoping that a daily morning run will help achieve this! DH has agreed to look after DS from 6-7am each morning.

Could I ask you all for some advice?

  • I'm bf-ing and was planning to express before I go (otherwise I'll be leaking all over the place). I've heard rumours that DS may not like my milk after exercise, does anyone have any experience of this?
  • As a 'larger lady', I was planning to wear two bras to support my huge norks. Is this sensible or just silly? Will it cause chaffing?
  • As I won't be having rest days, should I run one day and just walk the next?

Thank you in advance for any advise you can give....

asicsgirl · 08/09/2008 12:43

hi tpp! welcome and congrats on your ds

the runner's world site has a whole section on beginners' running which might be helpful?

i'm no expert but fwiw here is my take on your qs:

  • never had any probs with ds1 or ds2 taking breast milk after exercise
  • definitely get fitted for a proper sports bra, most important bit of kit after your trainers whatever size norks!! in the meantime yes, layer on the bras, try jumping around in front of the mirror to see how much you wobble
  • see runner's world site for advice on walking/ running. most people start off doing a mixture of the two e.g. 'scout's pace' where you walk for 16 paces then run for 16 then walk again... you could always just walk briskly every other day if you are worried about overdoing it.

hth and good luck!

sfxmum · 08/09/2008 13:16

runners world is great I agree and so are these people here

MrsWednesday · 08/09/2008 20:41

Thanks for the advice on the sports bra asicsgirl (I'm a Brooks girl myself ), will definitely make that my next purchase.

Hi sfxmum, I often seem to end up on the same threads as you! I'm not stalking you, honest . How's things, and how's your beautiful DD? With DS2 I carried on going to the gym until about 35 weeks but didn't run, just went on the cross-trainer as it was less stress on my joints. My dsis is still running at 15 weeks pg and intends to carry on as long as possible.

Really suffering today after my exertions yesterday, can barely walk and am expecting to be worse tomorrow. Any idea as to how long I should leave it before I go out on my next (short!) run?

Hope your run goes well tomorrow PP.

sfxmum · 08/09/2008 21:06

babydriver · 08/09/2008 21:54

Hi just popping in quickly - hello to newcomers. I went for a 40min run last night and it felt absolutely amazing. I seemed to step out at exactly the right pace and just kept on going without seeming to get tired or sore. I would have carried on for longer except it was in the evening and DH was expecting me and wd have worried. I hardly seemed puffed when I got in. Does anyone else get these 'wonder runs' from time to time? Hope I have another on the 10K day!!
