What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect

I'll need it Norks. Age is not on my side - I seem to be getting slower not faster.

Power-waddle sounds fine - just keep thinking how much being a bit fitter will help during labour.

I am thinking of jogging, rather then walking on a treadmill!

I have never jogged in the street before, and my fitness is poor, so does anyone know the best way to start?

DoubleBluff · 30/12/2007 17:00

Gosh Norks 20 weeks already!
I am going to start running again as i have been a laazy beetch the last few months and have ben making pathetic excusues about it being too cold, wet etc.
Will aim for a half marathon in the spring!
Hello everyone

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 30/12/2007 17:07

I ran the whole way - time of 1minute6secs with really bad blisters on both feet. Thought I was going to die crossing the line.

themoon66 · 30/12/2007 17:07

Well I'm kicking the new year off to a good start with a 10k on January 1st 11.15am on Cleethorpes sea front. Should be bracing if nowt else!

themoon66 · 30/12/2007 17:09

StripeyKnickersSpottySock - ONE MINUTE SIX SECONDS ???

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 30/12/2007 17:27

Ha ha, see I am delerious with fatigue. 1hr, 6minutes even.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/12/2007 18:03

Well done SKSS Fab time.

Jofeb04 have a look at the Race for Life link in the OP. They'll have a run/walk programme on there somewhere. I didn't start with a programme - I had a measured mile out and back route from home. I went out and ran as much of it as I could, walked a bit and ran again but not timed like the programmes generally are. I just kept running that bit further and walking that bit less until I ran all the way. Then increased distance bit by bit but didn't incorporate a walk again. Although I do now though sometimes when I increase my distance.

Just wanted to say Hi, I'm still out here, still running although hardly ever get to Mumsnet these days.

In fact, it's so long since I posted that most of you won't even recognise the name (special hi to Gizmo, SMBK, Popsycal, LapsedRunner et al)

I'm one term into a GTP course to teach Secondary Science so any spare time is spent running rather than on my PC, and the little time I have seems to be spent searching for exciting ways of teaching radioactivity to Year 10... No, we're not allowed to get them to do practicals

Some good efforts going on though, stick at it and don't let your brain kid you that you need to stop - you could take a leaf out of Paula's book and have a mantra - she used to count up to 20 over and over but at New York it was 'I love you Isla' which kept her focussed.

Mine is 'I can and I will', dd (8) has 'Kill the Hill' when out on our bikes.

I've entered Rough N Tumble in 2 weeks time, just over 10 miles of mud and hills followed by stunning cakes. Similarly Terminator in Feb, slightly longer; they pride themselves on the fact that their T-shirts are 'earned not given' then I've got Reading Half in early March.

Not entered FLM this time for obvious reasons but, Dannie, am happy to try to be a motivator for you as have done it twice before.

I've saved the thread so I'll be able to come back a little more frequently, I hope.

Remember, no matter how bad you feel & how awful the weather, you'll always come back smiling (if nothing else you can be smug that you've made the effort )

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/12/2007 20:00

OMG!! Twink!! Scary........

..........I've posted your inspirational tale on the Wobbly Women's thread today. And here you are

I think I need to take up the Kill the Hill mantra as I've been rather avoiding them this last year.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/12/2007 20:02

Rough and Tumble sounds like a much longer version of my Swishy Swashy race. Remember that lol?

Does anyone here know if you are allowed to start a running programme while pregant? I am planning on joining a local group next week - will be running twice a week, but building up slowly, running for a minute walking for a minute the first time out then gradually increasing but i am also ttc no 2 and am not sure if i would be allowed to keep up the running if, for example, i found out i was pregnant in a fortnights time.

At the moment i am pretty unfit, i walk a lot but have been really looking forward to starting runnning just to get some proper exercise again.

hatwoman · 30/12/2007 20:05

hello everyone. I have been rubbish recently. started going once a week with some mums from school, which is good, as is sociable and gets me out. but other than that I have been very lazy. obviously my ny resolution is to get back into it. fil asked if I wanted to do bath half with him and his wife. friend at school is doing farnborouhg/fleet/somehwere in hampshire half on teh same day...need to get myself back out there if I'm going to do either of those. nice to see this thread revived - it will keep me boosted to have somewhere to check into every now and again. hope everyone else is doing ok

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/12/2007 21:24

Hello hat - spotted you earlier on Cod's cushion thread I think . You seem to have been AWOL from MN lately or have you had a non-hat festive name?

Can't help with the pg running tartan, sorry. Although if you take it slowly I'm sure it will be fine.

hatwoman · 30/12/2007 22:35

I've been around - I guess not so much though - been visiting both sets of GPs plus usual Christmas stuff. hope you had a nice one.

Twink · 31/12/2007 08:19

Wow, that was very spooky !

Every time I read Going on a Bear hunt to my gd it reminds me of the swishy swashy race.

Tartan, a friend of mine has recently had her first baby; she ran through her first trimester, then ran/walked to keep her heart rate low, then finally did brisk walking, although she kept this up until past her due date and was back out yesterday complete with Baby Bjorn sling. Every little helps, get out the door and have a go, there's always an excuse not to !

jofeb04 · 31/12/2007 11:03

Thanks for that saggar.

Going out Thursday evening!

Sidge · 31/12/2007 11:17

Can I join??

I run in the gym on the treadmill as I can only go when the children are in bed and DH is home - I am not running round here alone in the dark!

I've increased my fitness since joining the gym in May, I can now do 5km in half an hour and I can plod jog for an hour, but not very quickly.

I have been a right lazy moo over the last month, so am going to get back into my routine and get going again regularly. My main dilemma is that DH (military) goes away again soon, so I don't know how I am going to get to the gym, I might need to grovel to my friend to babysit a couple of times a week!

DoubleBluff · 31/12/2007 16:50

There is a good take up so far. Lets mainatain the momentu.
I am going on the treadmill tomoroow Iam Iam Iam!!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 31/12/2007 16:52

I've done a 25 min plod today. Feel hungover but didn't drink yesterday

Welcome Sidge

quick question - does anyone run in MBT's or Earth trainers?

Twink · 31/12/2007 17:30

I occasionally jog in MBTs, chasing kids etc but don't run in them. I don't know anyone who does tbh, even one of our gym staff who wears them for everything else swops to running shoes when she's running with clients.

Following a big run yesterday, I did 15 mins on the Summit Trainer followed by sprint intervals on the treadmill at the gym. It's got this great setting where you set your walk/jog recovery speed and your run time and you can toggle between the 2 so when you're approaching death it's easy to slow down quickly. The only downside is the noise it makes when it's speeding up, everyone stares

BetulookgoodontheLove2danceflr · 31/12/2007 21:39

So glad to see this thread. I ran until about 22 weeks but had to stop when the bump felt too uncomfortable. DS is now nearly 12m. I got back into it gradually but since the end of November have had a cold then a chest infection. I felt well enough to start again but within 2 weeks I came down with a cold that is lingering but beginning to think about moving on . I guess being asthmatic I might take a bit longer to recover but it's not normally a big problem as I have my inhaler. Any tips for starting again after a run of upper respiratory tract infections?

Best of luck and applause to all those getting out there. I am full of admiration for all of you.

themoon66 · 01/01/2008 18:13

WOW.... I did my NY 10k at the seaside today in 58 mins and 16 seconds without too much pain and agony.

Am pleased with my start to the new year. Now I just have to get that time down by 10 mins to get back where I was.... which feels impossible at the moment.

Wallace · 01/01/2008 19:21

WD good time for NYD!

I started day 1 of week1 of my new schedule
