What's your aim for 2008?

Mine is to enjoy running for the whole of 10k rather than just the middle 20 minutes - and it would be great to do the distance in under an hour but I'm not overly hopeful in that respect

Flippin 'eck Wallace! I'm at your times. I did a sub 10k once - by about 10 seconds - I think it was a fluke.

I am the same when I'm due - surprisingly sprightly once my period actually arrives.

I'm signing up for this 10k andthis. Not a run.

Also at wallace. I may set myself the target of doing a sub-hour 10k next year.

babydriver · 25/08/2008 21:19

Hello, looks like this thread's perked up! Wallace, I'm impressed at a sub-hour 10K as it seems pretty fast to me as a novice, but I know what it's like when you feel you can do better.

Like others, I don't like running in heat/humidity, so this summer's been pretty good in that respect! Did my 30mins today and remembered to take the pedometer with me - not sure I've got the stride length right but I reckon I managed somewhere between 2.6 and 2.8 miles.

Oh yes, the 10K I'm hoping to do is Hampton Court. The blurb had reassuring things to say about it being flat, plus it's closest to us anyway and should give me some beautiful scenery to look at as I go round.

sfxmum · 25/08/2008 21:48

babydriver when is the Hampton Court? that is near me

am well impressed with the times Wallace hoping and dreaming

Wallace · 26/08/2008 10:09

Now you've made me all

babydriver - I've only been running just over a year, so you'll see huge improvements quickly. I'm impressed that you are doing a 10k already!

sfxmum · 27/08/2008 16:03

so how many of you did some running during pregnancy?
answers greatly appreciated

babydriver · 27/08/2008 22:29

sfxmum, the Hampton Court run is on 28 Sept, 11am.

Wallace, signing up was the only way I knew I'd get off my backside and exercise! And it is getting easier, certainly.

Wallace · 28/08/2008 19:05

sfxmum - I didmn't start running after I had all my babies, but if I did get pregnant (not going to happen!) I think I would run for as long as I felt comfortable. Good luck!

babydriver - it is easier if you have a target. And make sure everyone knows what you are doing so you can't back out

hatcam · 28/08/2008 22:49

hello

sfxmum - I ran until about 28/30 weeks with 2nd baby because it felt ok (had a decent sports bra!) but first one stopped much earlier.

still teaching classes now (35 weeks) so still leaping about. not for everyone, but it suits me!

sfxmum · 28/08/2008 22:57

there you are hatcam been looking for you since last spoke on other thread, many thanks good to know

babydriver thanks and good luck

popstar · 30/08/2008 00:35

Anyone else doing/done the Beaulieu Cancer Resaerch 10k? Would appreciate any info on what the course is like.
Did the Race for Life last year in 29:45 so was originaly aiming for an hour for the 10k but haven't trained as nuch as I should, so realistically 1:10 maybe.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 31/08/2008 19:52

29.45 is a good time - especially as it can be a bit busy at the beginning of a RFL. Good luck with the 10k!

I've had a poor week and really need to get a grip

Mon - gym
Tues - 25 mins (although is was race pace)
Wed, Thur, Fri - I was away and very lazy
Sat - 35 mins steady
Sun - gym

Must do better

Wallace · 01/09/2008 09:00

I'm struggling to get out three times a week too.

I really should have done 7 or 8 miles this weekend to build up to the half marathon, but I was away for the weekend.

asicsgirl · 02/09/2008 12:44

hallo all. thought i would join in! been running for 20 years now tho' still not much good at it, lol.

have just started going out again after having ds2 (now 16 weeks). motivation to get out is not the prob - i'm raring to go! - but i can only do it when dp is around to field the boy(s) for an hour or so. so atm it's 2-3 times a week for about 45min. feels great tho

long term aim is to run a 10k - have never raced or even run with a club, mostly go on my own for head space, tho i don't push myself as hard if i run alone. but would like to see what running in a race is like!

main problem here is i'm surrounded by hard nut fell runners... no offence! i run in the woods but not keen on having to watch every step - i like to day dream...

Wallace · 03/09/2008 14:56

Hi asicsgirl

I find entering races is really good for motivation. As is running with a club - a run passes more quickly when you are chatting. But like you I also like to run by myself for the peace and quiet!

I bought new running shoes today - asics!

asicsgirl · 03/09/2008 17:42

wallace

i love my asics trainers, they changed my life

now go out and get 'em nice and muddy

sfxmum · 03/09/2008 17:54

I wear asics too very comfy I find

but don't really like new shoes particularly in January oh the snobbery

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/09/2008 17:56

Me too

suey2 · 03/09/2008 18:15

hello all!
I am planning to get back to running now DD is 8 months and i finally feel i have the energy!
I have run sporadically through the years and have run 2 marathons. I want to get back to half marathon distance.
I am also a physio.

Personally asics are terrible for me- i went for a gait assessment and they gave me asics- i ran a 1/2 in them about 6 weeks later and the last 5 miles had sharp shooting pain between the toes. Went back to nike after that ( better shock absorbancy ) and the problem never recurred. Asics are good if you need pronation control but not if you have decent arches IMO

asicsgirl · 03/09/2008 19:19

i love asics because i have orthotics and they do a shoe that is designed to take them. i also have v narrow feet so many brands i just swim in.

enough product placement!

going out for run tomorrow am while ds1 is at school and ds2 with daddy i'm sure it will bucket down but i don't care!

babydriver · 03/09/2008 22:03

Hi folks, and hello to asicsgirl and suey2. Good to know there are a fair few of us pounding the pavements/fells etc.

Did my training run this morning - run 25mins/walk 5mins/run 10mins and it went pretty well. Apart from the increasing fitness, I've found the training has helped get me into the mindset of simply keeping on going.

My shoes are Sauconys, which were the first ones the running shop recommended for me after seeing me run, and they've been absolutely fine.

Can I ask a kit question? As it's getting colder in the mornings, is it worth getting a running jacket? In the past I've just used a helly hansen under a tshirt but if I'm going to go out in the rain too, are jackets any good?

asicsgirl · 05/09/2008 14:18

hi babydriver! i wonder about running jackets too. i currently borrow dp's cycling rainjacket when it's tipping down as it's v light and i can just tie it round my waist when i don't need it. but it's not exactly breathable, a bit like running in a kagoul!

i get v hot when running so i tend in winter to put on lots of layers and gradually take them off. i like the idea of a jacket but worry that i would just be carrying it after the first 5 mins, lol.

will be interested in others' thoughts...

another kit question: i can't stand running in really tight trousers - i've got several pairs of ronhills in various states of nastiness but would like something a bit more groovy (and hopefully more flattering... and maybe even long enough in the leg if that's not too much to expect ) any recommendations?? ta!

sfxmum · 05/09/2008 14:58

I used a nike waterproof tinghy but it has not been really tested in proper rain just some showers, the sleeves zip off and it does not have a hood so I ran with a cap which helps with my glasses

not much of a rain runner mostly because of the glasses but the jacket is very breathable

OrmIrian · 05/09/2008 15:10

Have a broken foot.

I want to go running. I am missing it so much Going to be weeks and weeks. Can't cheat with a frigging plaster cast on my right leg.

Mind you I was worried about putting on weight cos I can't run. Having spent nearly 24 hrs getting about by hopping or using crutches and bum shuffling up the stairs I'm knackered!

asicsgirl · 05/09/2008 18:43

oh bad luck ormirian not surprised you are missing running, sure i would be the same.

will you be allowed to do anything non-weight bearing when it's healed a bit? or do you have to stay right off it for the whole time?
